Where does a pastor get his authority?
Running Away From My Church Blog ^ | 1/7/2018 | Robert Messner

But that chain of authority is often not so clear in the church world, especially amongst non-denominational evangelicals. If a man or woman steps up behind a pulpit and speaks to us authoritatively on matters of theology, why do we automatically accept this authority? Is it because we like what we hear? Or do we validate the authority because the pastor’s interpretation of the Bible jives with our own understanding? But who are we to even make that judgement? Why is our interpretation of the Bible any better than the person sitting next to us on the pew? And if we disagree with an aspect of the pastor’s views, do we have a right to question him? Or do we have to accept what he says because we have already consented to his authority?

One day I was reading through Psalms and came across this.

Now, I KNOW I must have read them before but some how they escaped my attention.

Psalm 50:14-15 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

Psalm 50:23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!”

You guys have Francis, which your magisterium elected to be the new pope.

How’s the cocaine fueled gay sex orgies at the Vatican going?

And you want to point fingers/deflect the conversation?

“It depends upon what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is. - William Clinton

Exactly. You are using Bill's argument. Is means Is. Nothing else

You really don’t understand Greek language, translation, figures of speech, context, hermeneutics, etc., do you??

If you did, you wouldn’t pretend that is a valid argument.

OK. Use your brilliance to tell me why, the word IS means two different things in these two Scripture verses.

" and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mat 3:17 So here you believe ‘is’ means ‘is’

But here, “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” Mat 26:26, you believe ‘Is” means ‘Represents”

Please tell me why. It is the same word in Greek

You have to redefine ‘is’ to support your man-made belief.

As I said, you do not seem to understand how Greek is used, translated, context, figures of speech, etc.

Being unlearned is where we all start. Not growing once we see a deficiency is sad.

You have to redefine ‘is’ to support your man-made belief.

Oh, this is sad, FRiend.

No Apostle believed or taught your view. It came much later in Roman history, as paganism crept into your church. Now you read it back into a passage and base your argument on "is."

As I said, you do not seem to understand how Greek is used, translated, context, figures of speech, etc.

And you, with all your brilliance, are unable to answer a simple question

I will repeat it: Use your brilliance to tell me why the word IS means two different things in these two Scripture verses, even though it is the same word in Greek.

" and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mat 3:17 Here you believe ‘is’ means ‘is’

Please tell me why. It is the same word in Greek

This should be easy for you, but you refuse to provide an answer.

And show me ANYWHERE in the New Testament does the word 'is' means represents.

And you, with all your brilliance, are unable to answer a simple question

I have come to believe there are fewer wastes of energy - especially on FR - than to try to teach someone who has no interest in seeking truth, but has already decided. That is the majority of FRomans who participate on the Religion Forum threads.

As near as I can tell, all you've done is double down on a tiny thing you believe proves your position, while ignoring the rest of the evidence that disproves your claim. Perhaps it is a comfort to you to have your view reinforced. I accept that.

I've seen it over 20 years here. I used to respond in great detail, until I realized you cannot fill a cup that is already full.

I've put you in a position where if you wished to seek truth, you can find it.

If you don't seek it, you are failing to "love God with all your mind" and as my buddy Mark17 says, "that's on you bro."

No, you put yourself into a position where you cannot answer the simple question, being, what is the meaning of the word 'is'

Please try. I want to learn.

You are ignoring the truth of the word 'is'

Thank you for calling my attention to those scriptures. It's something I could easily fair to do when I get all riled up about something.

I haven't read through the bible lately, a lot keeps coming to my remembrance, fulfilling a promise of God, but every time I have, I notice something new or get a new insight.

And at the end of my prayers, when I have the emotional energy to pray in that manner, out loud, first a petition, then the Lord's Prayer followed by praise I liked from the Catholic mass. There's much truth and goodness in the church regardless of the problems.

From memory, different locales change the wording slightly on some of these:

Glory to God in the Highest and peace to His people on earth, Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, We worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory, Lord Jesus Christ, only son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us, You are seated at the right hand of the Father, receive our prayers, For you alone are the Holy One, You alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. I didn't want to look it up but might have gotten a little of it wrong. I don't see how anybody of any denomination can find fault with the words and meaning of it. And there aren't too many prayers of praise even though a lot of us will say the short phrase of it. There are some nice songs of praise.

FoF, I am OK with you being comforted in your beliefs.

I used to share your view.

It is in your power now to seek and find the truth. Will you take responsibility and seek truth?

Absolutely.

Show me the Truth. Why should we ignore the simple words of Scripture, to support your ‘truth’

I will repeat my question – show me the truth: Tell me why, the word IS means two different things in these two Scripture verses.

" and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mat 3:17 Here you believe ‘is’ means ‘is’

They really don't understand Jesus' words PRIOR to this part either:

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:35-40)

No FRiend, I'm not going to spoon feed you.

If you know what you want to find, you can seek. You have internet access and most is online these days.

Don't beg. It is unbecoming of a FReeper.

FoF, you are posting self-embarrassing things now.

Go seek. In less than an hour, you will find you've been lied to by the guys in the costumes.

Perhaps that is too difficult to face. When the time is right, you will become a student and study God's Word.

The Truth is that Jesus did not come to change anything. He came to fulfill the law, not abolish it, and the law prohibits the eating of blood.

Catholicism teaches that people must eat blood, something God condemns throughout Scripture.

You never did answer.

Did Jesus command people to break the Law and sin or not? If He told them to eat blood, yes, He did.

If He meant figuratively, then, no, He didn't.

Jesus Himself said the flesh profits nothing.

John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Are you going to say He was lying here?
