Oregon Christian Bakers Lose Appeal

Sued by same-sex couple for not baking them a "wedding" cake

SALEM, Ore. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Despite their appeal, a Christian couple in Oregon is being ordered to pay $135,000 to a same-sex couple after refusing to bake a cake for their "marriage."

In January 2013, spouses Aaron and Melissa Klein declined to make a same-sex "wedding" cake for Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer. The lesbian couple retaliated by filing a discrimination complaint with the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.

In 2015, a judge ruled in favor of the homosexual couple and ordered the Christians to pay $135,000 for emotional damage and mental distress.

On Thursday, a panel of judges on the Oregon Court of Appeals upheld the fine.

The Kleins have had to close their bakery, "Sweetcakes by Melissa" outside Portland, during this legal battle.

The Christian couple was represented in the Court of Appeals by attorneys from the First Liberty Institute (FLI).

First Liberty Institute President Kelly Shackelford said in a statement Thursday, "Freedom of expression for ourselves should require freedom of expression for others. Today, the Oregon Court of Appeals decided that Aaron and Melissa Klein are not entitled to the Constitution's promises of religious liberty and free speech."

I wondered, if you set up a company online to take orders for wedding cakes out of state who would pay the baker as a subcontractor to fulfill the order, wouldn’t this get around this discrimination of Christians?

Insane but just more Oregon style justice. SCOTUS needs to severely limit interpretation of public accomodation.

How do they plan on getting blood from a turnip? I wonder if anyone told these scum bags, that there is a certain place where the sun don’t shine?

This lesbian couple, Rachel and Laurel Bowman-Cryer, and the judges involved in this miscarriage of justice are the embodiment of evil.

Just form a partnership agreement with another bakery and send them clients you you cannot fit into your schedule

Be sure you send them various kinds of orders - not just homosexual ceremonies

There are all sorts of ways this could be worked around. The big problem I see here was that the bakers had a storefront. That made them a convenient target.

They are being denied their God-given Rights.

Yep. The claims of emotional distress and what this supposedly lead to are so laughingly bogus that his ruling shows how obviously prejudice the administrative judge was against the bakers.

They are being denied their God-given Rights.

The courts invented another "right" when they created "gay marriage" ex nihilo, and now that "right" has come into collision with another, pre-existing right: freedom of religion. So, now the courts have made their decision, which one of these is still a right, and which one is a, get this, license which the government may grant or deny as it sees fit.

Should we have expected anything different?

Make no mistake, they are coming for the churches. It is just a matter of time until churches lose their tax exempt status unless they toe the line with the culture perspective on marriage.

Dark days are coming for us believers here on earth, I think we were told this would be so. Our solace is eternity.

This all originated in civil rights legislation that created the concept of public accomodations. One apparently loses all constitutional rights when they open a store front. Freedom of association, free speech, and religious liberty—all must be surrendered if one intends to do business.

The SCOTUS opened a massive can of constitutional worms here. In order to right a wrong, racial discrimination, they opened the door to greater evil—the loss of liberty. It’s getting to the point where political minorities, like faithful Christians, must hide what they believe in order to make a living.

Revelation 13:16-17 “And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name.”

How can this be constitutional? "You either bake my cake, or I will have everything you own".

Time for Christians to "exodus" from Oregon. Kick the dust from your feet as you leave. Let them reap the reward from on high they have demanded.

Wife of a Good friend in Columbus, OH sells Wedding and Specialty cakes. Had a “same sex” couple come in asking a lot of questions about making a cake for them, how she felt about it, etc. She told them if they could pay for the cake she would bake it. They left without buying anything. The owner smelled “set up” all the way.

You have no idea. This state goes after The Salvation Army and Christian judges and more that we don’t hear about with a vengeance.
