Students Question Catholic School's Emphasis on Christmas
Campus Reform ^ | 12/7/17 | Kyle Perisic

* Some students are complaining that Loyola University Chicago puts a greater emphasis on Christmas than on other religious holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

*Whereas 60 percent of the 2016 freshman class identifies as Roman Catholic, with the other 40% split among all other religious affiliations, the student paper asserts that just 5% of all students are Muslim.

Students at a major Catholic university are upset at the school’s emphasis on Christmas, saying they wish other religious holidays would receive equal attention on campus.

At Loyola University Chicago, Muslim students told The Loyola Phoenix that they wish Muslim holidays would receive the same attention as Christian holidays, despite Muslims accounting for less than five percent of the student population.

In fact, Catholics comprise 60 percent of the 2016 freshman class, though the school does not specify the number of students who are Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, or other Christian denominations, merely noting that 40 percent have a religious affiliation other than Catholic.

According to the Phoenix, there are approximately 800 Muslim students at the university, which accounts for less than five percent of the university’s 16,673 students.

Sajid Ahmed, prayer coordinator for the Muslim Student Association (MSA), told the Phoenix that Eid al-Fitr, the Muslim holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan, is “a bit dampened” at Loyola.

There needs to be separation.

Christian schools should be Christian.

The headline says “students” but the article says “some students.” This is not ALL students, but a few specially-privileged members on non-Christian religions of cults.

We don’t do eid because we don’t chop heads.

This may come as a surprise, but the schools are considered to not be just for Catholics, actually all residents of a parish are considered to be the church’s responsibility, not just the ones who attend church. It’s a novel idea.

If those parents want to send their kids to a Catholic school they should be prepared for a Catholic education. If they don’t like it - tough.

<>These students are Islamic Enemy agents imho and should be told to leave forthwith.<>

Gosh, yes.

Off topic here, but given that President Trump’s travel ban can go on, and he has shut down the Pali office in DC, stood up for Israel at the UN, and recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, I have hope that the screws will turn tighter on muzzies in the US. They must go.

Excuse my French, but how phucking stupid are these people?

They're not stupid at all. They're evil. You went to Georgetown to get an education. These mohammedan invaders went to Loyola to destroy it.

**Resurrection Sunday should be celebrated more than Christmas.**

In the Catholic Church it is celebrated more than Christmas. More Masses, catechumens and candidates come into the church that night. A joyous evening.

Early this year. Ash Wednesday is February 14th.

The church that I attend celebrates both seasons mostly equally, though with a slightly different focus. In this VERY secular country, Canada (and somewhat similarity, the US), we celebrate Santa Claus, 'peace on Earth', the 'magic' of Christmas and spending great piles of money on useless gifts, while obsessively avoiding 'the reason for the season', Jesus' birth, as foretold by several prophets in the Old Testament.

Because so many people now attend church only once each year at Christmas time, often just to satisfy mom and dad, or grandma and grandpa, my church uses Christmas as a time to evangelise the 'unchurched', those that do not know, or have walked away from '(dis)organised religion'.

This weekend, the church does its Christmas production, '[Work] In Progress: A Christmas Story'. The production focuses on the 'why' that we need a Saviour, rather than a large number of carols and the Christmas story from Luke and Matthew. With a 75 member choir, a 60 member orchestra, a large number of worship singers and musicians and a large drama team, Centre Street Church's Christmas production draws many people to the church who would otherwise never enter a church. The last presentation is at 5:55PM (MST) and may be viewed over the internet http://csc.churchonline.org.

In addition to five presentations this weekend, the last being at 5:55 PM (MST), there are five Christmas Eve services, focused on why each one of us needs a Saviour. Again, like the Christmas production, the focus is on the unchurched, especially those who come to church because of 'tradition'. As a follow-up, years ago, the Pastor did a 10 part sermon series on 'Why Believe?', in essence, an apologetics series for those who are 'seeking' or new to faith in Jesus. This follow-up series is offered on video, begining in January, focusing on people new to the faith. It goes well with Alpha courses.

While the Easter production and Easter services do have a focus on evangelising to the unchurched, there is more of a focus on those who believe, because secular society has mostly ignored Easter while turning Christmas into a secular holiday where 'love' is measured in how much you spend. Church is seen as 'tradition', so provides more of an opportunity to evangelise to the 'unchurched'.

I saw a sign today that mentioned “the magic of Christmas.” I like the sign otherwise, so did not buy it.

There is nothing “magic” about Christmas. People need to look to God for the reason for the season.
