When Coco Layne, a Brooklyn-based producer, meets someone new these days, the first question that comes up in conversation isnt Where do you live? or What do you do? but Whats your sign?
Interest in spirituality has been booming in recent years while interest in religion plummets, especially among millennials. The majority of Americans now believe it is not necessary to believe in God to have good morals, a study from Pew Research Center released Wednesday found. The percentage of people between the ages of 18 and 29 who never doubt existence of God fell from 81% in 2007 to 67% in 2012.
Meanwhile, more than half of young adults in the U.S. believe astrology is a science. compared to less than 8% of the Chinese public. The psychic services industry which includes astrology, aura reading, mediumship, tarot-card reading and palmistry, among other metaphysical services grew 2% between 2011 and 2016. It is now worth $2 billion annually, according to industry analysis firm IBIS World.
Melissa Jayne, owner of Brooklyn-based metaphysical boutique Catland, said she has seen a major uptick in interest in the occult in the past five years, especially among New Yorkers in their 20s. The store offers workshops like Witchcraft 101, Astrology 101, and a Spirit Seance.
Whether it be spell-casting, tarot, astrology, meditation and trance, or herbalism, these traditions offer tangible ways for people to enact change in their lives, she said. For a generation that grew up in a world of big industry, environmental destruction, large and oppressive governments, and toxic social structures, all of which seem too big to change, this can be incredibly attractive.

Good grief. It's straight out of "Ghostbusters":
You mean that chick I gave $50 to in order to read my cards was not a scientist? You mean she lied to me?
I guess that means I’m not going to be rich.
Then again, .... millennials never were too bright!
[Why millennials are ditching religion for witchcraft and astrology]
MILLENNIALS grew up on HARRY POTTER. The POTTER SERIES play practically nonstop on Freeform. They know every spell, but NOTHING about JESUS CHRIST, LORD and SAVIOR.
Sad thing many CHRISTIANS fell for Harry too.
a generation that grew up in a world of big industry, environmental destruction, large and oppressive governments, and toxic social structures
My kids thought I was cruel when I wouldn’t let them read the Harry Potter books.

Harry Potter is great storytelling or something.
not a millennial, but disagree. they are the first generation to have the world and it’s knowledge at it’s finger tips.
When the series first came out, a TIME MAGAZINE cover had legions of little kids with witches hats on their heads to promote HARRY POTTER. It made me sick knowing that is what many would become.
Why Christians would visit DISNEY WORLD and allow their children to watch Disney programing is beyond me. It promotes the LGBTQ agenda, disrespect for parents, the occult...
exchanging eternity in heaven for eternity in hell- gee- what a brilliant decision
As fantasy literature goes, the Harry Potter series is absurdly overrated. IMHO, anyway.
Give me J. R .R. Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, and Michael Moorcock any day.
People yearn for understanding of something bigger than the are. Modern mainstream christian denominations, many of them, have abandoned their prior moral certainty and absolute truths for a moral relativism driven by the current zeitgeist. This is wholly unsatisfactory to that drive for some universal divine truth. So many people are abandoning the traditional denominations and seeking something that doesn’t say “you tell us what the truth is and we’ll agree”.
The Harry Potter books should be burned and all prints of the movies destroyed as well.
That's a rather harsh review. I didn't think they were very good, but they weren't that bad.
:-)
Because they’re poorly educated.
its called magical thinking. there is a big problem with a lot of liberals where they don’t like reality so they believe in a mental construct of a reality they would like to be.
And this is why we aren’t winning. The Harry Potter books are entertaining just like all books are entertaining. OMG, I can’t even, lol.
Humans are probably the only species that has the neurological capacity for mysticism. Those neurological circuits are critical for such thought processes as wonderment, reflection, search for meaning and without them much philosophical thought would never occur. This capacity for mysticism is expressed in many different ways. Religious belief and ritual has been until relatively recently the primary mystical expression for Western civilization. Recently pagan earth and celebrity worship complete with objects of veneration such as red carpets, annual feasts such as award ceremonies, anthropomorphic projections on animals, astrology, yoga, UFO fixations, ghosts, voodoo etc. has replaced traditional religion as the modalities in which mysticism is expressed in a neo pagan hedonistic culture.
