Venezuelan Bishops Pray to Virgin Mary to Free the Country from the ‘Claws of Communism’

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) has publicly invoked the intercession of the Virgin Mary to free the nation “from the claws of communism,” in a clear reference to the regime of President Nicolás Maduro.

“Blessed Virgin, Mother of Coromoto, heavenly Patron of Venezuela, free our country from the claws of communism and socialism,” the CEV posted on Twitter this Sunday, complete with an image of Santa Maria and a Venezuelan flag.

Ravenwolf, I will put it to you straightforwardly. ‘Adelphos,’ was a very common, much-used word.

You are right, it was not used as cousin but it was used for brethren and it was used for kinsman which could be anything.

Genesis13
8 And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

They were not brothers but Lot was a nephew.

Also Mary the wife of Cleophas

Matthew 27:56

56 among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

It never mentions Virgin Mary being the mother of these two
but it does mention Mary the wife of Cleophas being their mother.

af_vet_1981 I believe we are getting too tied up with definitions.

‘Adelphos,’ is, as you mentioned, also used to describe spiritual brothers—i.e.: brothers in Christ. -------------------------------------------------------- Also אָח or ach means brother but it also means kinsman, so if you want to tell some one that you had a visit from some kin you could use that word but if you wanted to let some one know that a cousin visited you you would use a different word. Hebrew was translated into Greek but it would still mean the same to the Jews, אָח translated to Adelphos would still mean kin.

There are more verses in this psalm...

1 Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in the miry depths,
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me.
3 I am worn out calling for help;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,
those who seek to destroy me.
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal.

You really believe that fits the Jesus we read about in the NT?

The OT was written in Hebrew. OT references do not pertain to the discussion because the NT was written in Koine Greek. Iow, the fact that the OT didn’t use the word, ‘anepsios,’ is irrelevant. ‘Anepsios,’ isn’t Hebrew.

No idea what point is being made re the Matthew passage. Neither the word, ‘adelphos,’ nor ‘anepsios,’ occurs in that reference.

Matthew 27:

56 Among them was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

Why do you continue to kick against the goads?

Why are you doing the same? do you understand that there are foster brothers and step brothers, not to mention brothers also can mean kinsmen.

Also do you choose to just ignore the fact that at least two of the ones called the brothers of Jesus has a different mother, the one called the wife of Clopas?

I would think that since there is no mention of Mary being the mother of any of Jesus`s so called brothers that some of these other mothers sons being the same names would get some attention.

Is paying attention too expensive?.

The NT was not translated from Hebrew. It was written in Greek, and the word choice was guided/God-breathed by the Holy Spirit.

‘to mention brothers also can mean kinsmen.’

You’re confusing Greek and Hebrew. Greek has a separate, precise word for ‘kinsman,’ - ‘suggenes.’

Here are dozens of translations of Matthew 27:56. Not a single one of them tracks with the passage you posted:

Few others seem to have noticed.

I didn't.

This is a falsehood;

I know; but Rome still teaches that Mary was sinless.

Not much I can do about it.

Simply disgraceful.

I know; but Catholics worldwide do it.

Sorry, i do not buy that.

GOD's 'only' begotten Son.

Not Mary's only begotten.

I think there is a difference between born and first born.

I wonder what it is?

The scripture shows Mary also has an (ἀδελφὴ, adelphé: sister) traditionally a relative of some kind (cousin or sister-in-law) for an additional example of the usage of brother or sister in the extended sense you mentioned.

Catholicism and it's followers are a wee selective on what is 'believed about Mary' that has no mention ANYWHERE in Scripture!
