The Humility of Jesus' Self-Emptying

But emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men (Philippians 2:7).
As part of His humble descent from Heaven to earth, Jesus set aside the exercise of His divine privileges.
The next step in Jesus pattern of humility as He came to earth and lived among mankind was His emptying of Himself. But Scripture is clear that while on earth our Lord claimed to be God: He who has seen Me has seen the Father (John 14:9). At no time did He stop being God.
The Greek word for emptied gives us the theological term kenosis, the doctrine of Christs self-emptying. The kenosis basically reminds us of what we saw in yesterdays lesson: Jesus humble refusal to cling to His advantages and privileges in Heaven. The Son of God, who has a right to everything and is fully satisfied within Himself, voluntarily emptied Himself.
We have already noted that Jesus did not empty Himself of His deity, but He did lay aside certain prerogatives. For one thing, He gave up His heavenly glory. Thats why, in anticipation of His return to the Father, Christ prayed, Glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I ever had with Thee before the world was (John 17:5).
Jesus also relinquished His independent authority and completely submitted Himself to the Fathers will: Not as I will, but as Thou wilt (Matt. 26:39).
During His time on earth, Christ also voluntarily limited the use and display of His divine attributes. One good illustration of this concerned His omniscience, His knowledge of all things. In teaching about the end-times and His second coming, Jesus said, But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone (Matt. 24:36).
Jesus self-emptying demonstrates a wonderful aspect of the gospel. Unlike man-centered, works-oriented religions, the biblical gospel has Gods Son willingly yielding His privileges to sacrifice Himself for sinners like us.
Suggestions for Prayer
Pray that you would become more appreciative of the sacrificial humility Jesus Christ exercised on your behalf.
For Further Study
Scripture does not record a lot about Jesus boyhood. But the account we do have verifies His emptying. Read Luke 2:39-52. What does verse 47 imply about Jesus nature? How do verses 51-52 exemplify His emptying?

I wonder where Mormon type doctrines came from? Well...
...the Founder himself said...
"I Will Be a Second Mohammed"
In the heat of the Missouri 'Mormon War' of 1838, Joseph Smith made the following claim, "I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was "the Alcoran [Koran] or the Sword". So shall it eventually be with us: "Joseph Smith or the Sword!" It is most interesting that a self-proclaimed Christian prophet would liken himself to Mohammed, the founder of Islam. His own comparison invites us to take a closer look as well. And when we do, we find some striking and troubling parallels. Consider the following.
-
Mohammed and Joseph Smith both had humble beginnings. Neither had formal religious connections or upbringing, and both were relatively uneducated. Both founded new religions by creating their own scriptures. In fact, followers of both prophets claim these scriptures are miracles since their authors were the most simple and uneducated of men. -
Both prophets claim of having angel visitations, and of receiving divine revelation to restore pure religion to the earth again. Mohammed was told that both Jews and Christians had long since corrupted their scriptures and religion. In like manner, Joseph Smith was told that all of Christianity had become corrupt, and that consequently the Bible itself was no longer reliable. In both cases, this corruption required a complete restoration of both scripture and religion. Nothing which preceded either prophet could be relied upon any longer. Both prophets claim they were used of God to restore eternal truths which once existed on earth, but had been lost due to human corruption. -
Both prophets created new scripture which borrowed heavily from the Bible, but with a substantially new spin. In his Koran, Mohammed appropriates a number of Biblical themes and characters, but he changes the complete sense of many passages, claiming to 'correct' the Bible. In so doing he changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place. In like manner, Joseph Smith created the Book of Mormon, much of which is plagiarized directly from the King James Bible. Interestingly, the Book of Mormon claims that this same Bible has been substantially corrupted and is therefore unreliable. In addition, Joseph Smith went so far as to actually create his own version of the Bible itself, the 'Inspired Version' in which he both adds and deletes significant portions of text, claiming he is 'correcting' it. In so doing he also changes many doctrines, introducing his own in their place. -
As a part of their new scriptural 'spin', both prophets saw themselves as prophesied in scripture, and both saw themselves as a continuation of a long line of Biblical prophets. Mohammed saw himself as a continuation of the ministry of Moses and Jesus. Joseph Smith saw himself as a successor to Enoch, Melchizedek, Joseph and Moses. Joseph Smith actually wrote himself into his own version of the Bible by name. -
Both prophets held up their own scripture as superior to the Bible. Mohammed claimed that the Koran was a perfect copy of the original which was in heaven. The Koran is therefore held to be absolutely perfect, far superior to the Bible and superceding it. In like manner, Joseph Smith also made the following claim. "I told the Brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding its precepts, than by any other book." -
Despite their claim that the Bible was corrupt, both prophets admonished their followers to adhere to its teachings. An obvious contradiction, this led to selective acceptance of some portions and wholesale rejection of others. As a result, the Bible is accepted by both groups of followers only to the extent that it agrees with their prophet's own superior revelation. -
Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith taught that true salvation was to be found only in their respective religions. Those who would not accept their message were considered 'infidels', pagans or Gentiles. In so doing, both prophets became the enemy of genuine Christianity, and have led many people away from the Christ of the Bible. -
Both prophets encountered fierce opposition to their new religions and had to flee from town to town because of threats on their lives. Both retaliated to this opposition by forming their own militias. Both ultimately set up their own towns as model societies. -
Both Mohammed and Joseph Smith left unclear instructions about their successors. The majority of Mohammed's followers, Sunni Muslims, believe they were to elect their new leader, whereas the minority, Shiite Muslims, look to Ali ibn Abi lib, whom they consider Divinely appointed, as the rightful successor to Muhammad, and the first imam. (Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad). Similarly, the majority of Joseph Smith's followers, Mormons, believed their next prophet should have been the existing leader of their quorum of twelve apostles, whereas the minority, RLDS, believed Joseph Smith's own son should have been their next prophet. Differences on this issue, and many others, have created substantial tension between these rival groups of each prophet. -
Mohammed taught that Jesus was just another of a long line of human prophets, of which he was the last. He taught that he was superior to Christ and superceded Him. In comparison, Joseph Smith also made the following claim.
"I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet." In light of these parallels, perhaps Joseph Smith's claim to be a second Mohammed unwittingly became his most genuine prophecy of all.
Joseph Smith made this statement at the conclusion of a speech in the public square at Far West, Missouri on October 14, 1838. This particular quote is documented in Fawn M. Brodie, No Man Knows My History, second edition, (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1971), p. 230-231. Fawn Brodie's footnote regarding this speech contains valuable information, and follows. âExcept where noted, all the details of this chapter [16] are taken from the History of the [Mormon] Church. This speech, however, was not recorded there, and the report given here is based upon the accounts of seven men. See the affidavits of T.B. Marsh, Orson Hyde, George M. Hinkle, John Corrill, W.W. Phelps, Samson Avard, and Reed Peck in Correspondence, Orders, etc., pp. 57-59, 97-129. The Marsh and Hyde account, which was made on October 24, is particularly important. Part of it was reproduced in History of the [Mormon] Church, Vol. III, p. 167. See also the Peck manuscript, p. 80. Joseph himself barely mentioned the speech in his history; see Vol. III, p. 162. Well, there was this Catholic site I thought about sending you to, but you seem to hate Catholics more than Muslims. Isn't "Haters gonna hate" a bit overused these days?

You, nor others on this thread have any moral high ground to criticize Catholics, or anyone else for that manner, for making erroneous charges, as we've witnessed you and your fellows here, make plenty. Nor others is a pretty broad brush.
Do you consider ME as one of those fellows?
If so (I want to be as correct as possible) would you care to point out any 'erroneous charges' I've made so that I could directly address them instead of trying to read what is on your mind?
Thanks.

In addition, marriage is described from the beginning as sexual cleaving, (Gn. 2:24; Mt. 19:3-5) and there is only one possible exception to that, which was that of a very infirm old man, David, with Bathsheba. (1Kg. 1) You probably meant Abishag the Shunnamite (I Kings 1:14, 15) .
100% correct. Right address, wrong name! Thanks.

I wonder where Mormon type doctrines came from? I can tell you where they do NOT come from; and that is the book of MORMON!!!
There's not much in it that has any ANTI-Christian theology in it.
That's why they want you to READ it and then pray about it's veracity!
Other than goofy; impossible to detect early 'history' the BoM is a mish-mash of KJV verses.
The REAL goodies of MORMONism are found in the OTHER LDS 'scripture'.
The ones they do NOT hand out to you and ask you to pray about: The Doctrines and Covenants, the Pearl of great Price, and the suspect KJV instead of the 'Inspired' Version that 'GOD' told JS to translate to REMOVE the 'error' found in the KJV.
(He did so; but Salt Lake City (SLC) does NOT claim it to be SCRIPTURE - go figger!!)

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 16
The wicked take the truth to be hardLehis sons marry the daughters of IshmaelThe Liahona guides their course in the wildernessMessages from the Lord are written on the Liahona from time to timeIshmael dies; his family murmur because of afflictions. Between 600 and 592 B.C.
1 And now it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had made an end of speaking to my brethren, behold they said unto me: Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear.
2
And it came to pass that I said unto them that I knew that I had spoken
ahard things against the wicked, according to the truth; and the righteous have I justified, and testified that they should be lifted up at the last day; wherefore, the
bguilty taketh the
ctruth to be hard, for it
dcutteth them to the very center.
3 And now my brethren, if ye were righteous and were willing to hearken to the truth, and give heed unto it, that ye might
awalk uprightly before God, then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thou speakest hard things against us.
4 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did exhort my brethren, with all diligence, to keep the commandments of the Lord.
5
And it came to pass that they did
ahumble themselves before the Lord; insomuch that I had joy and great hopes of them, that they would walk in the paths of righteousness.
6 Now, all these things were said and done as my father dwelt in a tent in the
avalley which he called Lemuel.
7
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, took one of the
adaughters of Ishmael to
bwife; and also, my brethren took of the
cdaughters of Ishmael to wife; and also
dZoram took the eldest daughter of Ishmael to wife.
8 And thus my father had fulfilled all the
acommandments of the Lord which had been given unto him. And also, I, Nephi, had been blessed of the Lord exceedingly.
9
And it came to passthat the voice of the Lord spake unto my father by night, and commanded him that on the morrow he should take his
ajourney into the wilderness.
10 And it came to passthat as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round aball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one bpointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness.
11
And it came to passthat we did gather together whatsoever things we should carry into the wilderness, and all the remainder of our provisions which the Lord had given unto us; and we did take
aseed of every kind that we might carry into the wilderness.
12 And it came to pass that we did take our tents and depart into the wilderness, across the river Laman.
13
And it came to pass that we traveled for the space of four days, nearly a south-southeast direction, and we did pitch our tents again; and we did call the name of the place
aShazer.
14
And it came to pass that we did take our bows and our arrows, and go forth into the wilderness to slay food for our families; and after we had slain food for our families we did return again to our families in the wilderness, to the place of Shazer. And we did go forth again in the wilderness, following the same direction, keeping in the most fertile parts of the wilderness, which were in the borders near the
aRed Sea.
15
And it came to pass that we did travel for the space of many days,
aslaying food by the way, with our bows and our arrows and our stones and our slings.
16 And we did follow the adirections of the ball, which led us in the more fertile parts of the wilderness.
17 And after we had traveled for the space of many days, we did pitch our tents for the space of a time, that we might again rest ourselves and obtain food for our families.
18
And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine
asteel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food.
19 And it came to pass that we did return without food to our families, and being much fatigued, because of their journeying, they did suffer much for the want of food.
20
And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly, because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness; and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; yea, and they were all exceedingly sorrowful, even that they did
amurmur against the Lord.
21
And it came to pass that I, Nephi, having been afflicted with my brethren because of the loss of my bow, and their bows having lost their
asprings, it began to be exceedingly difficult, yea, insomuch that we could obtain no food.
22
And it came to pass I, Nephi, did speak much unto my brethren, because they had hardened their hearts again, even unto
acomplaining against the Lord their God.
23
And it came to pass I, Nephi, did
amake out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my
bfather: Whither shall I go to obtain food?
24
And it came to pass that he did
ainquire of the Lord, for they had
bhumbled themselves because of my words; for I did say many things unto them in the energy of my soul.
25
And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came unto my father; and he was truly
achastened because of his murmuring against the Lord, insomuch that he was brought down into the depths of sorrow.
26 And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord said unto him: Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written.
27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were awritten upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives.
28 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the afaith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them.
29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us
aunderstanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by
bsmall means the Lord can bring about great things.
30 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the adirections which were given upon the ball.
31
And it came to pass that I did slay wild
abeasts, insomuch that I did obtain food for our families.
32
And it came to pass that I did return to our tents, bearing the beasts which I had slain; and now when they beheld that I had obtained
afood, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him.
33 And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning; and after we had traveled for the space of many days we did pitch our tents again, that we might tarry for the space of a time.
34
And it came to pass that
aIshmael died, and was buried in the place which was called
bNahom.
35
And it came to pass that the daughters of Ishmael did
amourn exceedingly, because of the loss of their father, and because of their
bafflictions in the wilderness; and they did
cmurmur against my father, because he had brought them out of the land of Jerusalem, saying: Our father is dead; yea, and we have wandered much in the wilderness, and we have suffered much affliction, hunger, thirst, and fatigue; and after all these sufferings we must perish in the wilderness with hunger.
36 And thus they did murmur against my father, and also against me; and they were desirous to
areturn again to Jerusalem.
37 And Laman said unto Lemuel and also unto the sons of Ishmael: Behold, let us
aslay our father, and also our brother Nephi, who has taken it upon him to be our
bruler and our teacher, who are his elder brethren.
38 Now, he says that the Lord has talked with him, and also that
aangels have ministered unto him. But behold, we know that he lies unto us; and he tells us these things, and he worketh many things by his cunning arts, that he may deceive our eyes, thinking, perhaps, that he may lead us away into some strange wilderness; and after he has led us away, he has thought to make himself a king and a ruler over us, that he may do with us according to his will and pleasure. And after this manner did my brother Laman
bstir up their hearts to
canger.
39
And it came to pass that the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did
achasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish.

You, nor others on this thread have any moral high ground to criticize Catholics, or anyone else for that manner, for making erroneous charges, as we've witnessed you and your fellows here, make plenty. Neither you nor anyone (save for Bathsheba for Abishag) showed i made any erroneous charges while progressively losing what little credibility you had.
What should've/could've been a friendly/respectable discussion has turned into a hate fest; condemning Jews, Catholics, Mormons, and maybe even Hindus, IIRC. I know you feel you're right, and of course, I know I'm right, but who's right isn't important. How we treat one another, especially when it comes to our fellow Christians, is far more important.
Therefore your recourse is to "Well genius," "take your bigotry and stuff it" and snowflake whining about being the subject of reproof, which real Scripture commands.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. (Ephesians 5:11)
And as the mods says , Open threads are in a town square format.... Antagonism though not encouraged, should be expectedIf you keep getting your feelings hurt because other posters ridicule or disapprove or hate what you hold dear, then you are too thin-skinned to be involved in open RF debate. You should IGNORE open RF threads altogether and instead post to RF threads labeled prayer devotional caucus or ecumenical.

So you are presuming that because something isnt outright contradicted, such as the ages of Mary and Joseph, that they should be accepted as true? Yup, but that's not a presumption, since texts exist, one dated to the 2nd century, before the establishment of the Church in Rome, which gives the ages of Mary and Joseph in startling precision.
If that panics or rocks your world, I'm sorry for you. But I'm going with an ancient, written text, over someone(s) opinion or assumptions not based on anything but handed down doctrine.
You and your friends are welcome to believe whatever you wish, but you're not going to change my mind. Nor even your admittedly "harsh treatment". I only asked for contradicting evidence from scripture, not a treatise on the evils of Catholicism, Judaism, Mormonism, or graphic clips from horror films.
Despite all of the vitriol you and your friends have drummed up, not one verse have you presented that contradicts the ages of Mary and Joseph as given in the texts I listed at the start of this most horrible example of "Christian" love, I've seen in quite some time.
With that, I take my leave from your wonderful thread, even more confident in the story of Mary and Joseph, as told in the Infancy Gospels, and in the virtuousness of Mary, which I firmly believe she maintained all her life.
God bless her! What a wonderful, priceless gift she brought forth for ALL mankind.

It neither panics me nor rocks my world.
There’s no evidence that it’s true and for someone to pass it off as truth or Scripture is wrong and I will speak out against it.
What rocks some people’s world is the thought that Joseph and Mary had a normal marriage and had sex within it and produced offspring, all totally supported by actual Scripture.
So if virginity is so virtuous, then all the rest of us folks who are married and enjoy it are not virtuous, eh?
Just a bunch of carnal heathens for enjoying what God blessed mankind with.
