Donald Trump was booed by diners during a Catholic fundraising event last night.
The Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, an annual white-tie gala in New York, is often the last time the two presidential nominees share a stage before Election Day and is traditionally a time when campaign hostilities are set aside. The event raises money for impoverished children throughout New York
The speakers usually poke fun at themselves and each other. But the audience seemed to think Trump had crossed a line with his caustic language about Clinton.
Trump referred to his opponent as “corrupt” during a lengthy riff on the FBI’s investigation into her use of a private email server as secretary of state.
“Hillary is so corrupt she got kicked off the Watergate Commission. How corrupt do you have to be to get kicked off the Watergate Commission? Pretty corrupt,” he said to loud boos and at least one call demanding he get off the stage.
Trump went on, to growing jeers: “Hillary believes that it’s vital to deceive the people by having one public policy and a totally different policy in private. Here she is tonight, in public, pretending not to hate Catholics.”
It comes after the controversy over the “Catholic Spring” emails, in which Wikileaks revealed that Clinton’s campaign chief, John Podesta, claimed to have helped “create” organisations in order to start a “revolution” within the Church.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan said yesterday that comments made about Catholics in these and other Wikileaks emails were “insulting and patronising.” He told ABC: “If it had been said about the Jewish community, if it had been said about the Islamic community, within 10 minutes there would have been an apology and a complete distancing from those remarks.” Cardinal Dolan said that he hoped Clinton would disassociate herself from the remarks.
At last night’s dinner, Trump and Clinton sat on either side of Cardinal Dolan. When they entered and took their seats, they did not greet each other or make eye contact, though they did shake hands at the conclusion of the roast.
Dolan later called his seat “the iciest place on the planet.”
Most eyes were on Trump, who famously glowered through President Barack Obama’s jokes at his expense during the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner.
The speeches largely exhibited the gently mocking humour which is traditional at the event. Trump’s biggest laughs came as he talked about claims Melania Trump had copied parts of a speech from Michelle Obama. “They think [Michelle Obama’s] absolutely great. My wife Melania gives the exact same speech, and people get on her case,” he said to whoops and laughs.
Clinton was the first one to laugh when Trump joked that she had bumped into him earlier in the night “and she very civilly said ‘Pardon me'” — a reference to the Republican nominee’s frequent declarations that his opponent should go to jail.
Clinton, meanwhile, joked that she had taken a break from her “usual nap schedule” to attend and suggested that the audience should be pleased she’s not charging her usual fee for speaking in front of potential donors.
But she also got in some digs at Trump, a few of which drew scattered jeers. Clinton said she understood why Trump disliked teleprompters, because they can be difficult to follow and “I’m sure it’s even harder when you’re translating from the original Russian.”
She also joked about Trump’s attitude to women. Most Americans see the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of freedom, Clinton said; but “Donald looks at the Statue of Liberty and sees a ‘4’. Maybe a ‘5’ if she loses the torch and tablet and changes her hair.”
The dinner is named after the former New York governor Al Smith, a Democrat who in 1928 became the first Catholic to receive a major party nomination for president.
More saying the same - Chris Wallace on with Varney - say’s Trump went over the line last night.
As did Hillary.
If Trump were arguing or joking with a true “lady”, I would expect him to be more of a gentleman. Hillary, on the other hand, is like Joseph Stalin. She is evil and deserves no respect.
How do you make common cause with an abortionist, communist, sodomite, criminal traitor who seeks to destroy these United States?
You cannot, and you're a damn fool to try.
As a Catholic, after what came out in Wikileaks about the left’s feelings about Catholics, I am ashamed of the Catholics in the audience.
$6,000,000 is chump change if these were the so called wealthy and elite of New York City Catholics. They are cheap, ill informed, and cafeteria Catholics.
God bless Cardinal O’Connor for keeping the Clintons away from photo-ops with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church.
Giving recognition to an openly declared promoter of killing children in the womb and celebrating same sex marriage in this venue is scandalous to the faithful.
“A nation that kills its own children is a nation without hope.”
Saint John Paul II
Exactly!
No we cannot “all get along” .
Mr. Trump speaks truth to power with courage.
May we do the same.
Plenty of 21st Century bankers that need the whip taken to them...
I thought Trump’s remarks were right on — the truth.
The audience must be either ignorant of the vehemently anti Catholic rhetoric from the Hillary campaign and her stand on partial birth abortion or doesn’t care
The boos came mostly from the media.
And the media is doing his work for him today. Everyone is talking about it.
“If you hate the degree and nature of corruption embodied by Hillary, it is awfully difficult to sugarcoat it and take light-hearted jabs at her. I say that what Trump showed last night was his honest, straight forward response given his understanding of the unfettered evil that Hillary is. THAT approach is what we need, and that I want, to clean up the cesspool in Washington.
It may look awkward in a high class social setting, but it trumpets the disgust and resolve Trump has to fix the mess. I suspect that some of the audible cringes were from those who are caught up in the evil and corruption. . . win and take them ALL down, Donald!!!!”
Agree 100%!!
This event pisses me off every time it happens. It’s kind of like the ruling class gets together and the rules are all the candidates are part of one big happy group that joshes gentle fun at each other.
That’s not the reality of America. We aren’t one big happy group. Pretending it is is just a lie. When Trump says what he really thinks about HRC, he gets booed because he’s not playing by the rules.
I agree completely. Nice post.
She doesn’t hate nominal liberal Catholics
In New York they and Liberal Jews are “it”
Minorities are vote bundles and tax recipients
Karl Denninger, The Market Ticker, was dead on in his analysis of this event. I have watched this in the past and mostly it was in good fun. I knew though last night Trump would walk in to use this to Hammer Hillary as she had never been hammered before and you could see just how uncomfortable she was there. Trying to look like she laughing and taking it in stride when you knew inside she was seething and trying to keep her rage under control. Trump hit her hard and needed to.
On another level though we have the Catholic Church, the past master of politics and intrigue, along with Hypocrisy and Mendacity. In that room and on the dais was a true collection, by and large, of Hypocrites and Mendacious Jackass’. Here you had Hillary Clinton whose own campaign, courtesy of Wikileaks, undermining and even plotting against our Judeo-Christian Heritage by trying to destroy the Catholic Faith all in the name of subjecting everything to Statism and Secularism.
Trump, like Daniel, walked into the Lion's Den and took no prisoners. Instead of Cardinal Dolan standing up for what he claims he believes in, he layed down like a Lamb and rolled over on his Faith ,and Principles be Damned.
It became hilarious though when the shots of the crowd surrounding Trump on the dais showed ashen faces and horrified expressions.... TOO FUNNY!
But remember FRiend, roasts are supposed to be risqué.
Trump gave Hillary both barrels, because she deserved it.
He was not afraid to be frank in such a setting. To his credit, he was channeling his inner John the Baptist!
And due to the fact that she is basically in contempt of almost all Catholic doctrine and tradition, even to the extreme of supporting late-term partial birth abortion, it is SHE whose presence and speech were inappropriate at the Catholics' roast.
Trump was booed because he was in front of a mixed crowd of hard core libs, commie media, and progressive hellbound pseudo-Catholics.
Real Catholics loved to see the murder-advocating heathen Hillary get skewered. And to see all the Pharisees squirm was icing on the cake.
