VATICAN CITY (RNS) Stop being judgmental hypocrites and take a look at yourself in the mirror without covering up your wrinkles Pope Francis advised Catholics in a sermon that reprised one of his favorite themes.
In his last homily at morning Mass before taking a break for the summer, Francis on Monday (June 20) said those who constantly judge people should instead reflect on their own behavior.
Look in the mirror, but not to put on makeup to hide the wrinkles. No, no, no, thats not the advice! Look in the mirror to look at yourself as you are, the pope said, in a report by Vatican Radio.
How can you say to your brother, Let me take the speck out of your eye, while the log is still in your eye? he continued. And how does the Lord look at us then, when we do this? One word: hypocrite. First take the log out of your eye, and then you shall see clearly to take the speck out of your brothers eye.'
Vatican Radio usually has a reporter present at the pontiffs daily morning Mass in the small chapel at the Vatican guest house where Francis lives. The pope will continue to celebrate Mass daily as usual, but without coverage of his remarks.
In this latest homily, the pope said those who are overly critical of others rather than looking at themselves are viewed as hypocrites by the Lord, and should not try and take Gods place:
Being judgmental is very ugly. Judgment belongs only to God, to Him alone!
The pontiff instead urged his followers to focus on love, understanding and mercy the latter being the theme of the Catholic Churchs current Holy Year jubilee.
His comments continue a central theme of his papacy, during which Francis has promoted a pastoral approach to Catholicism rather than the unforgiving imposition of canon law.
While such an approach has been widely praised, the pope has also been accused by traditionalists of trying to water down church doctrine.
Francis is famous and controversial, to some for once saying, in reply to a question on whether gay men could become priests, Who am I to judge?
'Look in the mirror, but not to put on makeup to hide the wrinkles. No, no, no, thats not the advice! Look in the mirror to look at yourself as you are,'

Judgment Warning: this guy is not fit to be the head of any Christian organisation. It is NOT about judging it is about right and wrong as biblically stated. Frankie has a problem with calling sin “sin.”
Apparently the Pope thinks there is an issue or he wouldn’t have said this.
No, this pope lays down the Heavy Head Trip. The lies of the Devil.
I don’t hang around with prostitutes, pimps, drug pushers, rapists, bank robbers etc, etc. I certainly do have a right to judge.

Which would Jesus hang around?
Its usually hypocritical because the people usually saying that are unhappy about being judged about something they are doing or advocating.
I wonder if the pope is remembering all the Huguenots who were slaughtered this day, St Bartholomew’s Day on August 24, 1572, when the Catholic pope of that time judged the Huguenots for their belief in the Christian Bible ???
The St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre wasn’t due to any love or understanding or mercy on the part of the Catholic assassins...
Frankie might well declare Being judgmental is very ugly. Judgment belongs only to God, to Him alone! but he would be better employed reflecting on the ugliness of the history of judgment and hypocrisy of the Catholic Church...
Other than the Crusades in which the Catholic popes got it right for once, and fought actual enemies of Christianity, most false judgment has fallen on innocent Protestant believers who were not a threat to Catholic people or lands...
When is the pope going to judge the moslems as bygone popes righteously did ???
If you don’t learn to judge others, you don’t learn from their mistakes and you don’t protect yourself from mishap. Used to think the same way the Pope directs and then realized that you don’t grow as a human being if you don’t have good judgement. If you are not judgemental, you would open all the prisons and let those that were judged to be a danger to us out into society.
rational pursuit of goals requires doing both plus judging one's conditions and one's environment.
Not after they met Him.
Dear Francis - Jesuit whore of Babylon, Luke 17:1-4 17 "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.
What do Jesus' words Rebuke, Repent, and Forgive mean?
{ BTW, notice no Roman vesitigial plumage required for the Forgive part... }
=HLPhat
He was trying to change the ways of the others.....not hanging with them.
Jesus was confronting a lawless MOB unlawfully about to condemn a prostitute to death.
1st of all, no one in the mob had the authority to cast judgement on the girl, and were thus about to commit murder themselves.
2nd, prostitutes don't have sex alone, and I am betting that in a small town many of the men there had been her clients, thus making them just as guilty as her!
3rd, there is no possible way to spread the word of how God wishes us to live our lives and what God does not wish us to do without JUDGING others behavior!
Oh, bull.
Are you serious? I am a devout Catholic and have no problem having my own opinion. The Pope is a human being, not Jesus, who asks us to be non-judgemental. How do you make a decision about bad or good if you don’t use judgement? We learn from others mistakes. . . some judgement needs to be used in those and all circumstances. Idealism and common sense sometimes are opposites.
“What gives you the authority to sit in judgment on your church leaders?”
God. God gave all men reason, that we may use it to make judgements for ourselves. He wouldn’t have given it to us if He didn’t intend for us to use it.
I think maybe you’ve watched the movie version of Jesus Christ Superstar too many times.
I think Jesus spent most of his time with his apostles and spoke to the multitudes.
>>Frankie has a problem with calling sin sin.
His Jesuit order has a long tradition of “accommodating” whatever is convenient and profitable for “the company”:

Got Syncretism?
Sorry, GC, the better question is which DID Jesus hang around with?
