Jews and Atheists Say Abortion is Morally Acceptable, Protestants, Catholics and Mormons Say No

Gallup released a new poll this week that examines people’s positions on abortion based on their religious affiliation.

The poll asked people about a series of moral issues, including abortion and doctor-assisted suicide, and then examined their answers based on their religious affiliation. Researchers found major differences among religious groups, with Protestants, Catholics and Mormons taking a pro-life stance and Jews and the non-religious taking a more liberal stance.

Gallup reports:

Jews and those with no religious preferences have virtually identical views on the morality of abortion, doctor-assisted suicide, gay-lesbian relations and cloning animals. Jews are somewhat less likely than nonreligious Americans to believe having a baby outside of marriage is moral, 68% to 80%.

Mormons, Protestants and Catholics believe that abortion, doctor-assisted suicide and cloning animals are not morally acceptable practices. Mormons are more conservative than Protestants and Catholics on abortion, gay-lesbian relations, doctor-assisted suicide and out-of-wedlock births, but not on cloning animals.

… The United States is one of the more religious western nations, and Americans’ religious identity influences the way they view matters of morality. The Mormon religion and many Protestant faiths promote strict moral codes that frown on abortion and out-of-wedlock births, with those values mostly endorsed by adherents of those religions. Catholic Church doctrine also instructs Catholics how to think about moral issues, but American Catholics’ views on many moral issues, including premarital sex, the death penalty and gay-lesbian relations, do not reflect the church’s positions. Nevertheless, Catholics tend to be more conservative on morality than those with no religion and Jewish Americans.

Mormons were the least likely to say that abortion is morally acceptable (18 percent), followed by Protestants (33 percent) and then Catholics (38 percent), according to the poll. Jewish responders were the most likely to say abortion is morally acceptable (76 percent), with the non-religious at a close second (73 percent).

The poll found that people are less opposed to doctor-assisted suicide, a growing threat in the U.S. The poll showed 30 percent of Mormons, 43 percent of Protestants and 47 percent of Catholics saying it is morally acceptable. Those who are Jewish and non-religious called the deadly procedure morally acceptable 73 percent and 77 percent of the time, respectably.

The poll confirms research from previous studies showing the influence religion has on people’s moral beliefs. The Christian tradition teaches that human lives are intrinsically valuable because they are created in the image of God, and this belief has led to a strong Christian presence in the pro-life movement.

A 2010 Pew poll found a strong correlation between religion and abortion:

On the issue of abortion, 26% overall say religion is the most important influence on their opinion, including 45% among abortion opponents.

Just 9 percent of those who support legalized abortion say religion affected their conclusion about it.

Religion is more influential on abortion views compared with other hot political topics as just 19 percent say religion influenced their stance on the death penalty, only 10 percent said it influenced their stance on poverty programs, 7 percent on immigration issues and just 6 percent on the environment.

The Jewish God is a product of the Jewish mind, so it stands to reason that they understand their creation better than you would. But I forget... the modern world is so very smart. They understand ancient texts better than the authors, understand Jesus better than his followers, understand the Constitution better than its framers... my my how brilliant they are. Really, no one needs a Bible or a Constitution. They just have to ask Christians what God wants (because they all are sure they know) and liberals what the Founding Fathers wanted (because they think they know too) and there you have it. Two separate groups who use the ancient texts to tell others what to do. Flip sides of the same coin.

Well, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are oblivious to how many girls China looses to abortion and adoption. Or the fact that Russia has been and probably still is getting depopulated by abortion.

Exactly! If her baby is her “property”, why are pregnant women not supposed to smoke, drink or eat sushi? Aren’t those things her “choice”? The unborn are seen as the property of the mother who has been given the “right” of life or death over her child. She also ‘owns’ her left hand. And yet; if she were to go to a ‘doctor’ to have it removed; she would be viewed as CRAZY!

The kicker is that if a woman tries to "self abort", she can be prosecuted. You can pay someone to kill your unborn baby but it's illegal to be your own abortionist. Strange!

Both nations will and are paying a price for their policies. The Clintons had a lot to do with helping China form their one child per family law. Chinese women were often forced to abort their babies. Europe's indigenous population, as a whole is paying a huge price for their dying culture and will slowly be taken over by refugees and immigrants.

The Jewish God is a product of the Jewish mind, so it stands to reason that they understand their creation better than you would.

There is no "Jewish" God nor a Gentile one. There is only just ONE TRUE God, the designer and creator all that exists. What is known about Him is not a "product of" any human mind but is what He has revealed about Himself - and understandable to anyone who is diligently seeking to know Him.

You don't believe He even exists so why keep tossing out these nonsensical softballs? What do you believe about the topic of this thread - abortion? Is it morally acceptable to you?

I keep replying because you keep addressing me. Yes, abortion is fine with me, as long as it’s not late term. If you don’t want to hear any more from me, stop addressing me. You ping me, you bring me.

And I keep replying to you because I think it is important to expose those here who come onto Conservative, pro-God, Pro-life sites and pretend to be what they are not. In what way do you see yourself as a Conservative?

You say abortion is fine with you "as long as it's not late term". What determines if it's late term for you? After the second trimester?

A Conservative believes in small government, a strong military, and individual rights. It has nothing to do with Christianity. I don’t like to see abortion after about the fourth month. I also don’t like to see cows slaughtered, but I doubt you’ll understand.

A Conservative believes in small government, a strong military, and individual rights. It has nothing to do with Christianity.

Don't babies have "individual" rights? Conservatism is about more than just those few things. There is a platform of the RNC that includes pro-life and pro-God planks. These basic things have an origin in how this country was founded which was upon the Judeo/Christian ideal.

I don’t like to see abortion after about the fourth month. I also don’t like to see cows slaughtered, but I doubt you’ll understand.

Why? If you don't care if a fetus is murdered before 16 weeks, what difference does a few more weeks make? It's the same child. By what yardstick do you "like" abortion prior to 20 weeks? Did you know that the youngest a premmie has been documented to survive was 21 weeks 6 days? Presuming the science of neonatology continues to develop, babies even younger may be able to survive outside of the mother's womb. Do you know about fetal development? Are you aware that there is a beating heart after just 21 DAYS? How about:

During the fourth month the baby's hair and teeth begin to form. The baby will be moving and active now and the mother may begin to feel baby's movement this month. The baby's digestive system is forming and the intestines are present. Meconium, the baby's first stool, is present in the intestines as well. By the end of this month it may be possible to determine baby's gender. The baby is approximately 5-6 inches long and weigh 5-8 ounces by the end of the month.

Month 5: The baby is developing a fine hair, called lanugo, which covers the body. Likewise, her eyelashes and eyebrows are developing. Her fingerprints and footprints are now developed. She begins to suck and swallow and may even be found sucking her thumb. Vernix, a white lanolin-like covering, appears on baby to protect her skin. Her ears are developed as well and she may be able to hear you now. The baby is approximately 7-8 inches long and weighs 3/4-1 pound by the end of this month. And, no, I wouldn't like to see cows slaughtered but I do enjoy a good steak. Are baby humans and cows the same to you?

I don’t like anything to suffer that can feel it. But no, babies don’t have individual rights. They don’t have the right to carry a gun, have free speech, privacy, religion, nothing. And the country being founded on the Judeo/Christian ideal is simply because most people were religious back then. You can keep the rules that work well and abandon those who don’t (which is exactly what Christianity does with the old rules for the Jews, right?)

Wow. Amazing to see ANYONE post this comment, on THIS forum.

So, you’re perfectly fine with abortion up until ‘about the fourth month’?? No sanctity of life, for that tiny being, before then?

Got it. We understand, completely.

Yeah, and these ‘polls’ are designed to marginalize Jews from conservative circles.

Only one authority determines who is and who isn’t a Jew.

Do you think unborn babies can't feel pain? Or, if/when they can, aborting them should be illegal? I'm trying to understand your reasoning here. I have no expectation of changing your mind about this, but I think it's important to educate people about the facts.

Babies may not be legally allowed to drive or own a gun, but as HUMAN beings, they do have rights the Constitution guarantees to all in this country. It's been a cop-out of the pro-abortion group to deny the unborn "personhood" (though there is pending legislation to grant that designation to unborn human life). That brings us back to the argument that contends women can abort their babies with impunity because they are not considered persons with inalienable rights - just like black slaves were. But, I guess you would have been okay with that, too, right?

No, I don’t think early term fetuses are cognizant enough to suffer. As for slaves, I have no idea how I’d feel if I were raised back then.

Are you willing to say abortion should be illegal if the fetus can feel pain? Are you aware:

As early as eight to ten weeks after conception, and definitely by thirteen-and-a-half weeks, the unborn experiences organic pain…. First, the unborn child's mouth, at eight weeks, then her hands at ten weeks, then her face, arms, and legs at eleven weeks become sensitive to touch. By thirteen-and-a-half weeks, she responds to pain at all levels of her nervous system in an integrated response which cannot be termed a mere reflex. She can now experience pain. Well, even some plants respond to touch, but it takes a functioning brain to process it.
