What's happened to the "who am I to judge" talk? This was Francis' response when asked about homosexuals in the priesthood. Apparently he has no qualms about judging priests and seminarians who are "overly pious".
This has been the rationale used throughout the Western church over the past 50 years to exclude from ordination many fine young men while active homosexuals and dissenters from Church teaching have been welcomed with catastrophic consequences. Many seminaries were and still are overtly hostile to young men with a love for Catholic tradition and devotions. "Neurotic" and "rigid" were/are the very terms so often used to blithely dismiss these young men as seminaries were turned into lavender palaces.
Take note here. Homosexuals are not sick. It's "overly pious" candidates for the priesthood who have a sickness.

Psalms 56:3-4 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?
Guess the Pope is going with Plan B — run away from scary priests who adhere to Word of God a bit too rigidly.

There are some people who suffer from what used to be called “scruples.” Is this what he’s referring to? If so, he couldn’t have said it in a more insensitive and buffoonish way.
That said, you make excellent points in your post.
