Father José Gabriel Funes, the director of the Vatican Observatory, said he was "very skeptical" that the discovery of Kepler-452b will lead to an encounter with extraterrestrial life in the near future.
Writing in the Vatican newspaper, the priest reviewed the positions of St. Albert the Great, Nicholas of Cusa, and others on the possibility of extraterrestrial life and said that Jesuit Father Angelo Secchi, a pioneer in astrophysics, thought that there were other inhabited worlds.
"It seems that the vast majority of stars in our galaxy ... at least potentially can have planets where life could develop," Father Funes added.
Solo noi nelluniverso? (L'Osservatore Romano, p. 5)
The Kepler-452b story is such a non-story.
So they discovered another planet similar to the size of earth (60% larger). Did anyone ever doubt there were no earth sized objects floating around the stars out there?
But we know absolutely nothing more about this planet. Hot? Cold? Rock? Gas?
I think it’s inevitable that we’ll discover evidence of life somewhere else. I personally believe it is the nature of the universe by its design to be able to propagate life.
Or else why bother?
He’s a pioneer in astrophysics.
Cool.
We’ve found ONE. We are egocentric to think we are the only intelligent life in existence and less than intelligent to think that there are not trillions + other earth sized planets in existence.
When I gaze upon the galaxy I am reminded of this promise...”in my fathers house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you.”
I like to envision all my departed loved ones occupying their mansion in His awesome heavenly galaxy.
In related news, the Pope calls for a global authority on Kepler-452b to change the economic system so that the planet is not destroyed by climate change.
So many planets, so few crosses.
“We are egocentric to think we are the only intelligent life in existence and less than intelligent to think that there are not trillions + other earth sized planets in existence.”
It’s got nothing to do with ego. Unless life can spontaneously arise from non-life, it doesn’t matter how many trillions of planets are out there. That’s an area where these speculators still come up short in the evidence department.
"To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." (Psalm 19:1)
My God can do anything.......any way he wants.
