For years, growing up as a Roman Catholic, we were taught that we were members of the one true church. It was impressed upon us regularly by the parish priest during Mass while giving his homily; by the nuns all throughout my Catholic parochial school years of second through seventh grade.
It was impressed upon us during our preparation to receive for the first time the sacraments of Penance, Communion and Confirmation. And while attending CCD classes all the way through high school. (CCD is the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, an association established at Rome in 1562 for the purpose of giving religious education, normally designed for children.)
It was an established fact that we understood and we never questioned the validity of it. And to be honest, it was a matter of pride, that we were privileged enough to be members of the correct church, while all others had belonged to something else that didnt quite measure up to the status of the Roman Catholic Church.
After all, how could it be possible that Roman Catholicism is not the one true church?
Look at what Rome has to offer: It has the priests, the nuns; the bishops; the cardinals; and of course, the Pope. They have the Sacraments; the statues; the holy water; the incense; the Stations of the Cross; the Eucharist - in which Chris supposedly physically manifests Himself into the wafer after the consecration by the priest during the Mass; the Marian apparitionswhich appear mainly to Roman Catholics.
And they have the Vatican, where the Vicar of Christ (who they believe is Christs representative on earth), governs the faithful and makes infallible proclamations and doctrine. How can this not be the one true church? No other organization on the face of the earth comes close to offering to its flock what Rome provides for its faithful.
But, of course, to be true, one must adhere to what has been established as truth and not teach or practice what is contrary to the truth. We read in Scripture a few passages that declare what is truth and what is not. Jesus proclaimed in John 14:6:
I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me.
This is truly a quote which reveals the RC premise for assurance of Truth. However, as your premise is false so is your conclusion. We do not and need not believe either the NT or the OT as being of God, nor of Moses or Christ being of God, based upon the premise that the authority which affirmed such was infallible, and thus warrants implicit trust, as per RCs.
Instead, both men and writings of God where correctly discerned and established as being so (essentially due to their unique and enduring Divine qualities and attestation) without an infallible magisterium.
And rather than placing implicit trust in those which sat in the authoritative seat of Moses, dissent from which was a capital crime in the OT, (Dt. 17:8-13) the church actually began in dissent from those who sat in the seat of Moses over Israel, (Mt. 23:2) who were the historical instruments and stewards of Scripture, "because that unto them were committed the oracles of God," (Rm. 3:2) to whom pertaineth" the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises" (Rm. 9:4) of Divine guidance, presence and perpetuation as they believed, (Gn. 12:2,3; 17:4,7,8; Ex. 19:5; Lv. 10:11; Dt. 4:31; 17:8-13; Ps, 11:4,9; Is. 41:10, Ps. 89:33,34; Jer. 7:23)
And instead they followed an itinerant Preacher whom the magisterium rejected, and whom the Messiah reproved them Scripture as being supreme, (Mk. 7:2-16) and established His Truth claims upon scriptural substantiation in word and in power, as did the early church as it began upon this basis. (Mt. 22:23-45; Lk. 24:27,44; Jn. 5:36,39; Acts 2:14-35; 4:33; 5:12; 15:6-21;17:2,11; 18:28; 28:23; Rm. 15:19; 2Cor. 12:12, etc.)
Well if you don't believe in Petrine authority then you must question the accuracy of the canonical books assembled in the Synod of Rome in AD 382 under Petrine authority that proclaimed the Written Word of God.
That argument has been dispensed with already .
The rest of your block text post seems to invoke historical claims, as if supporting Rome, and rather than going thru it all, see what even RC scholars, and others, have found.
Baloney. I know people in many denominations who support life and marriage. I was watching my church service on tv months ago and his sermon was on marriage and homosexuality. There are churches in my denomination which have been kicked out for going against God’s Word. Many years ago, JWs use to come to my door. That is, until I told a few where I went to church. It was amazing. I have not seen any since then. Guess they knew we knew more about the Bible than they did and did not want to waste their time. When we expanded, we bought the small Mormon church next door then added on to connect the 2 buildings. Blanket statements are often very wrong.
No worries! Peace be with you!
Yes, honor her willingness to accept her calling. Respect her role in the raising of our Lord in His earthly body. She is an incredible role model for unquestioning obedience to God's desire in our lives.
I take issue with placing her at a point between Jesus and ourselves. I also have issue with any saints as intercessors. Jesus was clear in John 14:6:
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me."
I see a distinction between His command for us on earth to pray to Him for one another and asking Mary or another saint who is no longer among the physical living to go to the Father (or Jesus) on our behalf.
Those in the Church who are praying for each other are creating bonds with each other by sharing in each others' lives, strengthening the Body of Christ. It is not that some have special connections to God that others do not. It is the act itself that is meaningful. God hears all prayers.
you mentioned pentecost salvation.
There is a parallel story in the old testament when Moses came down the mount with the tables of the covenant.3000 men were killed that day on that feast day that Aaron decared. Exodus 32.
The 3000 souls saved in the new testament is certainly a parallel to that very time of the Exodus.
And christendom declares that the birth of the church.
Here’s my question:
Moses spent 40 days on the mount. He didnt go up the mount until they had already spent 60 days in the wilderness, according to scripture.
that is 100 days after Passover.
why is the church’s birthday 50 days after First Fruits ?
or is the feast declared in exodus 32 by Aaron different than the feast they were observing in Acts?
maybe todays churches get their own birthday wrong.
that could explain why they have to guess His birthday too..
I guess this is predated by the Saducees and Pharisees diligently arguing which of THEIR groups were the 'true' one.
Tery; is it time for my pope list yet??
Thank GOD for this statement!
It explains how that fallible men can vote and ELECT, by a majority, an infallible pope.
(On certain things; that is...)
Neither do an awful lot of FR Catholics!!!
Protestantism, following Pharisees in placing their rabbis and their selves above Scripture and insisting that God accepts their changes to His Word and His Law.
Catholics had total control of the writings that they decided were to called Scripture.
They did NOT manage to include these 'authentic doctrines' in it when they had the chance.
I've always wondered why...
Listen for Jeremiah hollering from the hole.
Follow the sound and you will have found the cistern.
The one true Church has a stink coming from it’s head at this time.
HMMMmmm...
Is Peter the 'rock'?
As you can see, Simon was already known as 'Peter'
BEFORE the following verses came along.....
NIV 1 Corinthians 10:4
and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. NIV Luke 6:48
He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. NIV Romans 9:33
As it is written: "See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." NIV 1 Peter 2:4-8
4. As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- 5. you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 7. Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone, " 8. and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for. But, since there WAS no NT at the time Christ spoke to Peter, just what DID Peter and the rest of the Disciples know about ROCKS??? NIV Genesis 49:24-25 24. But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel, 25. because of your father's God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breast and womb. NIV Numbers 20:8
"Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so they and their livestock can drink." NIV Deuteronomy 32:4
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. NIV Deuteronomy 32:15
Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, he became heavy and sleek. He abandoned the God who made him and rejected the Rock his Savior. NIV Deuteronomy 32:18
You deserted the Rock, who fathered you; you forgot the God who gave you birth. NIV Deuteronomy 32:30-31
30. How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up? 31. For their rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede. NIV 1 Samuel 2:2
"There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. NIV 2 Samuel 22:2-3
2. He said: "The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; 3. my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior-- from violent men you save me. NIV 2 Samuel 22:32
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? NIV 2 Samuel 22:47
"The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God, the Rock, my Savior! NIV 2 Samuel 23:3-4
3. The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: `When one rules over men in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God, 4. he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings the grass from the earth.' NIV Psalms 18:2
The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. NIV Psalms 18:31
For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? NIV Psalms 18:46
The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! NIV Psalms 19:14
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer. NIV Psalms 28:1
To you I call, O LORD my Rock; do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who have gone down to the pit.
NIV Psalms 31:2-3
2. Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3. Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. NIV Psalms 42:9
I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" NIV Psalms 62:2
He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. NIV Psalms 62:6
He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. NIV Psalms 62:7
My salvation and my honor depend on God ; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. NIV Psalms 71:3
Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress. NIV Psalms 78:35
They remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High was their Redeemer. NIV Psalms 89:26
He will call out to me, `You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.' NIV Psalms 92:14-15
14. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15. proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him." NIV Psalms 95:1
Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. NIV Psalms 144:1
Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. NIV Isaiah 17:10
You have forgotten God your Savior; you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. NIV Isaiah 26:4
Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal. NIV Isaiah 30:29
And you will sing as on the night you celebrate a holy festival; your hearts will rejoice as when people go up with flutes to the mountain of the LORD, to the Rock of Israel. NIV Isaiah 44:8
Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one." NIV Habakkuk 1:12 O LORD, are you not from everlasting? My God, my Holy One, we will not die. O LORD, you have appointed them to execute judgment; O Rock, you have ordained them to punish. |
And now you know the Biblical position!
It says the same thing about it that it says about ANY organized religion.
There are going to be people in it who are true believers, who are part of the true church, and there are going to be tares.
The only thing that differs among the denominations is the percentages.
It's amazing to me how Catholics seem to TOTALLY ignore the SINS of the Catholic Leadership that CAUSED the 95 things nailed to the door!
Tery; it's getting close!!
FACT???
