Millions of sincere Catholics wear the brown scapular thinking by doing so it will help them spiritually. They believed the report that Mary made and is backing a salvation promise in connection with the brown scapular hundreds of years ago based on their religious traditions. Over the years wearing the brown scapular has been perpetuated by sincere Catholic leaders, such as the one in this video, but it is in complete futility that it is worn. It is a false hope and a spiritual snare. wearing brown scapularIt is not based on God’s truth and is, therefore, just as deadly for the sincere Catholic as it is for the Hindu who bathes in the Ganges River thinking his sins will be washed away in the water or for the Muslim who kisses the black stone of Kaaba to be forgiven! [The picture to the right is Mel Gibson, the director of the Passion of Christ, wearing a brown scapular as he smokes.]

I too once wore the brown scapular as an Ex Roman Catholic. I know what it is like to be taught something and accept it as truth to find out later it is not only unscriptural, but anti-scriptural. It hurts, but TRUTH is what we must stand on to be safe. It takes humility in such cases to turn.

NOTE: At about 2:23 time-wise into the video, the speaker is quoted below. How could anyone deny that Mary is deified in Catholicism? Surely, this rampant idolatry is grieving to the Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father. This is what Catholicism teaches about the brown scapular:

And so, wearing of the brown scapular reminds us, should remind us, of three things. First, that we are children of Mary. Second of all, that we need to work for our Lady. And finally, it should be a garment of humility and penance. First, by the brown scapular we profess ourselves to be children of Mary. The scapular of our Lady is a badge or a uniform so to speak by which we profess to whom we belong and who we serve. Likewise, our Lady in turn by wearing the brown scapular, she recognizes us as her children, as her special children. And because of that, she consequently protects us and watches over us. The brown scapular should also remind us that we need to work for our Lady because the scapular, which means shoulder garment, was originally that, it was a garment worn by religious in order to protect their habit, their religious habit that they wore on a daily basis during those periods of work to keep it from getting dirty, stained, from ripping, etc. and so therefore the scapular is a working garb. And so this should remind us that there’s no room for lazy piety. If we wear the brown scapular and we consider ourselves our Lady’s children, there’s no place for lazy piety but rather we should fill our lives with good works. This brown scapular should remind us the need to faithfully fulfill our daily duties, and to make another adaptation of Scripture, to labor as good soldiers of the Immaculate. Finally, the third place, the brown scapular is also a garment of humility and of penance. So in a spirit of penance, we should accept all the difficulties of our state of life and all the sufferings that our Lady may want to send us. And the scapular will give us the strength to do this. In all of our difficulties, we can always grab onto our brown scapular, remind ourselves of our Lady’s protection, her watchfulness, her presence and especially at the moment of death, when we can call to mind our Lady’s promise of salvation. Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us.

SP: You ask me how I know what I said, then you restate exactly what I said using different words. That's confusing.

I know this because that's the pattern God has set from Adam on down...Even the prophets spoken of by John in Rev 11, first stand before God then prophesy to the people.


Every prophet speaks God's message.  Not all who speak prophetically have stood before God in the sense of Isaiah or Moses.  There is no record of David receiving a direct vision from or audience with God.  God spoke to David through Nathan. Yet we have Psalm 22, a Davidic psalm that is a definite Messianic prophecy and confirmed to be such in the apostolic record.  

Also consider Caiaphas, the High Priest in Israel, who is confirmed to have spoken prophetically that Jesus would die for the nation.  No divine vision there, yet God in His magnificent wisdom and power was able to take the evil planned by this wicked man and turn it into a blessed prophecy of God's love for His people, that Jesus would die for their benefit.  

Bottom line, while there is no dispute that God has indeed on occasion given His message to a prophet through a supernatural vision or apparition, there is no limitation on God being able to send His message through those who have not had such visions themselves, but have nevertheless been moved by the Spirit of God to speak the words of God.  God is sovereign.

Anyway, sorry, no, no fallacy in the two-genealogies solution for Joseph. Your so-called "bigger issue" looks to me like a "look over here" tactic. We addressed your supposed contradiction by showing the text was both accurate and self-consistent across both Gospels. Since that is the basis of your "larger issue," you failed to show in this case the discrepancy required to prove the bigger issue. If you wish to make your conclusion, you have to succeed in making the supporting premises work, and you have not done that. There is therefore no reason for us to proceed to consideration of your conclusion.

BTW, as an attorney, I don't look for testimony from multiple eyewitnesses to match up perfectly to a casual reading. In fact, if a good attorney sees that sort of "perfection," it is a red flag they are dealing with false testimony. In real testimony, people color it with their own perspective of the event, their own vocabulary, and their own view of the world. Getting and reconciling testimony from multiple sources gives the event a three-dimensional reality that is virtually impossible to fake. In such a context, most "discrepancies" are normally this kind of natural variance between individuals, not true discrepancies of fact. Each is true, but reporting things in a slightly different breakdown of the sequence. But taken as a whole, it is still the same sequence, and the right kind of so-called "discrepancies" actually help prove the truth of it..


Sorry Councilor, but I won't be hiring you any time soon. Relying on the ignorance of the person you're debating and not doing due diligence on your sources is terrible way for a lawyer to present a case.

The site you quote from is an apologist site that strains logic to answer this dilemma.

First they talk about carrying on the family name and cite Numbers 36. In that time period there were no family names only family inheritances, property. Numbers 36 is about the transfer of property.

Second, in that time period and in the law of Moses you don't just change genealogies, you couldn't. Your exact genealogy meant something. From your birthright, to blessings passed down from father to son. Those genealogies were kept exact through their records.

There were prophesies regarding the exact linage of Jesus.

So, no it was not proper to refer to Joseph as the son of two different fathers. It's a mistake. Just because you read it on the internet doesn't make it true.

Probably what really happened was, one of the Apostle's just mixed up Mary's father with Joseph's father and wrote the wrong name down. He made the same mistake with names and faces that every human being makes.

If you have a healthy and realistic understanding of the Bible, you can understand how this little mistake memory could happen. Doesn't change the validity of the text, just human frailty.

If you have the perfection of God is linked to the perfection of the Bible view, you get a site like you quoted from. Where you have to jump through hoops and go to great lengths to explain away such simple things like I stated above. And to any reasonable person it looks ridiculous.

Right, there's no record. But then again there's no record of anyone peeing in the Bible either... You can disagree if you want, but I'm pretty sure they did...

If the prophesy was David's and not David quoting someone else, he would have had to have his own communication with God.

There is a difference between someone, who through the Holy Ghost prophesies, and an actual prophet who relays the instructions of God to the people.

An actual prophet holds a special place in the hierarchy of God. Where much is given, much is expected. God gives them a vision or visitation in order to give them a higher knowledge and higher purpose. They need that in order to endure the hardships that come with their calling. Most of the prophets faced death at the hands of those they giving their message to.

There is nothing in my teachings to the Church or in those of my associates, during the time specified, which can be reasonably construed to inculcate or encourage polygamy; and when any Elder of the Church has used language which appeared to convey any such teaching, he has been promptly reproved. And I now publicly declare that my advice to the Latter-day Saints is to refrain from contracting any marriage forbidden by the law of the land.

The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the programme. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty. It matters not who lives or who dies, or who is called to lead this Church, they have got to lead it by the inspiration of Almighty God. If they do not do it that way, they cannot do it at all. . . .

I have had some revelations of late, and very important ones to me, and I will tell you what the Lord has said to me. Let me bring your minds to what is termed the manifesto. . . .

The Lord has told me to ask the Latter-day Saints a question, and He also told me that if they would listen to what I said to them and answer the question put to them, by the Spirit and power of God, they would all answer alike, and they would all believe alike with regard to this matter.

The question is this: Which is the wisest course for the Latter-day Saints to pursue—to continue to attempt to practice plural marriage, with the laws of the nation against it and the opposition of sixty millions of people, and at the cost of the confiscation and loss of all the Temples, and the stopping of all the ordinances therein, both for the living and the dead, and the imprisonment of the First Presidency and Twelve and the heads of families in the Church, and the confiscation of personal property of the people (all of which of themselves would stop the practice); or, after doing and suffering what we have through our adherence to this principle to cease the practice and submit to the law, and through doing so leave the Prophets, Apostles and fathers at home, so that they can instruct the people and attend to the duties of the Church, and also leave the Temples in the hands of the Saints, so that they can attend to the ordinances of the Gospel, both for the living and the dead?

The Lord showed me by vision and revelation exactly what would take place
if we did not stop this practice. If we had not stopped it, you would have had no use for . . . any of the men in this temple at Logan; for all ordinances would be stopped throughout the land of Zion. Confusion would reign throughout Israel, and many men would be made prisoners. This trouble would have come upon the whole Church, and we should have been compelled to stop the practice. Now, the question is, whether it should be stopped in this manner, or in the way the Lord has manifested to us, and leave our Prophets and Apostles and fathers free men, and the temples in the hands of the people, so that the dead may be redeemed. A large number has already been delivered from the prison house in the spirit world by this people, and shall the work go on or stop? This is the question I lay before the Latter-day Saints. You have to judge for yourselves. I want you to answer it for yourselves. I shall not answer it; but I say to you that that is exactly the condition we as a people would have been in had we not taken the course we have.

. . . I saw exactly what would come to pass if there was not something done. I have had this spirit upon me for a long time. But I want to say this: I should have let all the temples go out of our hands; I should have gone to prison myself, and let every other man go there, had not the God of heaven commanded me to do what I did do; and when the hour came that I was commanded to do that, it was all clear to me. I went before the Lord, and I wrote what the Lord told me to write. . . .

I leave this with you, for you to contemplate and consider. The Lord is at work with us.

In Mormonism, the concept of divinity centers around an idea of "exaltation" and "eternal progression": the idea that mortals themselves may become gods and goddesses in the afterlife, be rulers of their own heavenly kingdoms, have spirit children, and increase in power and glory forever as a result of their posterity. Mormons understand that there are many gods and goddesses in the cosmos, including a Heavenly Mother. Exaltation and eternal progression[edit]

In Mormonism, the goal of each adherent is to achieve "exaltation" via the atonement of Jesus, as a result of which they inherit all the attributes of God the Father, including godhood. According to the belief, exaltation is available only to those who have earned the highest "degree" of the celestial kingdom.[8] As prerequisites for this "greatest gift of God",[9] adherents believe that either in this life or the afterlife, they must become "perfect" and they must participate in all the required ceremonies. Though not necessary, their exaltation can be "sealed upon them" by the Holy Ghost via the Second Anointing. One of the key qualifications for exaltation is being united in a celestial marriage to an opposite-sex partner via the ordinance of sealing,[10][11] either in person or by proxy after they have died. In the 19th century, some leaders of the LDS Church taught that participation in plural marriage was also a requirement of exaltation.[12] The LDS Church abandoned the practice over a century ago and teaches that only a single celestial marriage is required for exaltation.[13]

Some modern LDS Church leaders have taught that there are people living on other earths. For instance, apostle Joseph Fielding Smith (1876–1972) wrote:

"We are not the only people that the Lord has created. We have brothers and sisters on other earths. They look like us because they, too, are the children of God and were created in his image, for they are also his offspring."[40]

and

"...the great universe of stars has multiplied beyond the comprehension of men. Evidently each of these great systems is governed by divine law; with divine presiding Gods, for it would be unreasonable to assume that each was not so governed."[41]

Apostle Neal A. Maxwell (1926–2004) wrote, "we do not know how many inhabited worlds there are, or where they are. But certainly we are not alone."[42]
