In a new video, megachurch leader and author Rick Warren is calling for Christians to unite with Roman Catholics and Pope Francis, who Warren recently referred to as the Holy Fathera move that is raising concerns among Christians nationwide and is resulting in calls for Warren to repent.
Warren made the comments following his visit to the Vatican last month, where he spoke at an interfaith conference on the Complementarity of Man and Woman.
We have far more in common than what divides us, he said in the two-minute video released by the Catholic News Service on Wednesday, described as being an outline for an ecumenical vision for Catholics and Protestants to work together to defend the sanctity of life, sex and marriage.
They would all say, We believe in the Trinity; we believe in the Bible; we believe in the resurrection; we believe in salvation through Jesus Christ, Warren asserted, speaking of the various denominations within Christianity, of which he included Roman Catholicism. These are the big issues.
The author of the bestselling book The Purpose Driven Life then sought to defend Catholics from those who take issue with the practice of seeking the intercession of Mary and the various deceased persons that have been sainted by the Vatican.
Sometimes protestants think that Catholics worship Mary like shes another god, but thats not exactly Catholic doctrine, Warren contended. People say, What are the saints all about? Why are you praying to the saints? And when you understand what they mean by what theyre saying, theres a whole lot more commonality [that we have with Roman Catholics].
Theres still real differencesno doubt about that, Warren stated. But the most important thing is, if you love Jesus, were on the same team.
He closed by speaking of his belief that Christians and Catholics serve as co-laborers for the cause of defending life and family.
When it comes to the family, we are co-workers in the field in this for the protection of the sanctity of life, the sanctity of sex and the sanctity of marriage, Warren said. So, theres a great commonality and theres no division on any of those three.
But Warrens comments have raised concern from Christian leaders nationwide, who are now calling the Saddleback leader to repentance. Matt Slick of the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry (CARM) repudiated each of Warrens points.
Sure, there are Catholics who love the real Christ, the one who died on the cross for our sins. That is not the problem, he said. The problem is the Roman Catholic Churchs false teachings concerning Mary and salvation.
Rick Warren says both the Catholics and the Protestants believe in the Bible. But, there is a significant difference between the Bible of the Protestants and the Roman Catholic Church, which has added seven books, Slick wrote. [T]here are numerous problems in the apocryphal books, such as the teaching of salvation by works [and] the offering of money for the sins of the dead.
Warren implies that both Protestants and Catholics have the same view of salvation, he continued. Though its technically correct to say that Catholics believe in salvation through Jesus Christ, they reject justification by faith alone in Christ alone. Instead, it teaches that good works of various kinds are necessary for salvation.
The Christian apologist then pointed to several Roman Catholic teachings on Mary, mainly from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC), such as that Mary by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation and that [b]y asking Mary to pray for us, we acknowledge ourselves to be poor sinners and we address ourselves to the Mother of Mercy, the All-Holy One.
Rick Warren has not only failed to recognize the problems in these serious areas, but he has lent his credibility as a Protestant pastor in support of the Roman Catholic Church, Slick wrote. This should never be done by any Protestant pastor who takes the Bible seriously. I must conclude that Mr. Warren does not take the word of God seriously and/or he does not understand the damnable teachings of Roman Catholicism regarding salvation.
Rick Warren needs to repent, he said.
The similarities with liberals is also revealing.
The corruption of the word ekklesia by the Catholic Church and the amount of error it generates is stunning.
I'm one of nine and none of them Catholic. Does that make my family more right than you family?
And the pope only heard about it in the news just like we did right? And God will never punish America because it was only a few who promote and allow all the abominations right?
What caused me to leave that then was the disparity I saw between what I read in Scripture and what the Catholic church taught
Same here mom. I was raised as a catholic too. I was in the Air Force when the Navigators led me to faith in the real Jesus Christ. Their motto is to know Christ and make Him known, not to determine a church home for me. I still kept going to mass, but, like you, as I read scripture, I began to think something was wrong. I think I lasted about a month, before I gracefully bowed out. I was baptized in the swimming pool at Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, by a Southern Baptist chaplain, even though I didn't even know what a Southern Baptist was. To this day, however, no one affiliated with the Navigators has ever insisted that I attend any certain church. They left that up to my discretion. Make sense?
I lasted slightly longer in the Catholic church.
I was not sure what my family would think of leaving it, but took the plunge anyway.
They accepted it. They were more happy that I was going to church somewhere than not at all.
Even my mom, who remained in the Catholic church her whole life, recognized that it wasn’t the church that saved but faith in Christ.
You HAVE been blessed!
Probably live longer than a goat there.
"Now, therefore, we declare, say, determine and pronounce that for every human creature it is necessary for salvation to be subject to the authority of the Roman pontiff"
(I don't know exactly and there is no one left alive to ask.)
We never went to church, although I attended VBS a couple of times.
What 'religion' I had, I picked up from our society (White, Midwestern, lower middle class).
What got me started was a late night movie in Denver, 1960 (Getting AF electronic training at Lowery).
They played a flick about miracles at Lourdes.
After leaving the girl's house after midnight, I was walking along the outside of the fence at the end of the runway, looking at the incredibly clear sky and twinkling stars; quite unlike what I could see back home..
Thinking about 'miracles' caused me to say "BUNK! Mere coincidence!!"
I had learned about Evolution in school, and the Big Bang thing was being tossed about at this time (Yeah; a Catholic thought THAT up; too!).
Atom bombs were a threat to EVERYONE and nuclear winter was at our door!
E=mc2 and all that!
GOD??
Eh... I doubt it.
I knew from my wonderful math classes that equations can be written different ways. Einsteins could be re-written...
M=E/c2
That explained it ALL!
Big bang - poof - and there is all that MASS of the Universe.
I was a happy camper that I'd figgered it out!
It wasn't but a few steps later that a thought - almost a still small voice - said, "Where did the energy come from?"
Sometimes, I even surprise myself!
Interesting. We all have a different story on what motivated us to faith in Christ. I don't care what motivates people, as long as they come to Christ. My motivation, was a fear of heck, like your tagline. 😄 You were at Lowery in 1960? That would make you about 35. 😝 I joined the USAF in 1967, and retired in 88.
I wish!
I wish!
I know, I know. I don't subscribe to the idea of "growing old gracefully"
I guess the way to look at it, is one step closer to the Kingdom. Don't want to go to heck. 😄
God says an unbeliever is a fool. You don’t have to know a man’s heart to know he is an unbeliever. The atheist clearly declares he does not believe in God; therefore, in accordance with God’s Word, he can be labeled a “fool.” “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God.” Therefore, if you declare yourself to be an unbeliever, I am a liberty to quote the Word of God and define you as a “fool.” God is the one who says you are a fool, I’m simply agreeing with His Word, and have the boldness to speak it.
We need lots more like you!
What about MORMONs??
They like to talk about these things!!!
"All of this should be conveyed without having priesthood leaders focus upon intimate matters which are a part of husband and wife relationships. Skillful interviewing and counseling can occur without discussion of clinical details by placing firm responsibility on individual members of the Church to put their lives in order before exercising the privilege of entering a house of the Lord. The First Presidency has interpreted oral sex as constituting an unnatural, impure, or unholy practice. If a person is engaged in a practice which troubles him enough to ask about it, he should discontinue it."
- Official Declaration of the First Presidency of the Church, January 5th, 1982
"Among the most common sexual sins our young people commit are necking and petting. Not only do these improper relations often lead to fornication, [unwed] pregnancy, and abortions - all ugly sins - but in and of themselves they are pernicious evils, and it is often difficult for youth to distinguish where one ends and another begins. They awaken lust and stir evil thoughts and sex desires. They are but parts of the whole family of related sins and indiscretions. Almost like twins, 'petting' and fornication are alike."
- Prophet Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, page 65
"Also far-reaching is the effect of the loss of chastity. Once given or taken or stolen it can never be regained. Even in a forced contact such as rape or incest, the injured one is greatly outraged. If she has not cooperated and contributed to the foul deed, she is of course in a more favorable position. There is no condemnation where there is no voluntary participation. It is better to die in defending one's virtue than to live having lost it without a struggle."
- Prophet Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, page 196
"And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth." (Genesis 4:9-14.) That was true of murder. It is also true of illicit sex, which, of course, includes all petting, fornication, adultery, homosexual acts, and all other perversions. The Lord may say to offenders, as He did to Cain, "What hast thou done?" The children thus conceived make damning charges against you; the companions who have been frustrated and violated condemn you; the body that has been defiled cries out against you; the spirit which has been dwarfed convicts you. You will have difficulty throughout the ages in totally forgiving yourself."
-Prophet Spencer W. Kimball, "Love Versus Lust", BYU Speech January 5, 1965. Often-used quote still used today in LDS seminary classes.
"I do not find in the Bible the modern terms "petting" nor "homosexuality," yet I found numerous scriptures which forbade such acts under by whatever names they might be called. I could not find the term "homosexuality," but I did find numerous places where the Lord condemned such a practice with such vigor that even the death penalty was assessed."
- Apostle Spencer W. Kimball, "Love Versus Lust", BYU Speech January 5, 1965
"If adultery or fornication justified the death penalty in the old days, and still in Christ's day, is the sin any less today because the laws of the land do not assess the death penalty for it? Is the act less grievous? There must be a washing, a purging, a changing of attitudes, a correcting of appraisals, a strengthening toward self-mastery. There must be many prayers, and volumes of tears. There must be an inner conviction giving to the sin its full diabolical weight. There must be increased devotion and much thought and study. And this takes energy and time and often is accompanied with sore embarrassment, heavy deprivations and deep trials, even if indeed one is not excommunicated from the Church, losing all spiritual blessings."
-Prophet Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, Page 155
"How like the mistletoe is immorality. The killer plant starts with a sticky sweet berry. Little indiscretions are the berries -- indiscretions like sex thoughts sex discussions, passionate kissing, pornography. The leaves and little twigs are masturbation and necking and such, growing with every exercise. The full-grown plant is petting and sex looseness. It confounds, frustrates, and destroys like the parasite if it is not cut out and destroyed, for, in time it robs the tree, bleeds its life, and leaves it barren and dry; and, strangely enough, the parasite dies with its host."
- Apostle Spencer W. Kimball, General Conference Address, April 1, 1967.
So just as one is subject to the laws of their state even if they do not agree with them every Christian is subject to the Roman Pontiff.
This is a sophist spin if i ever saw one, but which is another illustration of the interpretative nature even of some infallible teaching.
Your explanation ignores the context which defines what is meant by "subject," as well as other historical teachings which define what membership means
We declare, say, define, and pronounce [ex cathedra] that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.
Boniface thus makes "subject" to mean commitment to the papacy and successors, which they were judged not to be by certain dissent.
Likewise
Pope Pius XI, Mortalium Animos: Furthermore, in this one Church of Christ no man can be or remain who does not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors. Did not the ancestors of those who are now entangled in the errors of Photius [the eastern Orthodox schismatics] and the reformers, obey the Bishop of Rome, the chief shepherd of souls?...Let none delude himself with obstinate wrangling. For life and salvation are here concerned...
Rendering subjection to the Roman pontiff and being part of the Church as inclusively meaning such as do not/will not accept, recognize and obey the authority and supremacy of Peter and his legitimate successors, is part of that obstinate wrangling.
"The practice of the Church has always been the same, as is shown by the unanimous teaching of the Fathers, who were wont to hold as outside Catholic communion, and alien to the Church, whoever would recede in the least degree from any point of doctrine proposed by her authoritative MagisteriumSatis Cognitum (# 9): June 29, 1896: ."
Likewise the Fifth Lateran Council defines that 'subjection to the Roman pontiff is necessary for salvation for all Christ's faithful, as we are taught by the testimony of both sacred scripture and the holy fathers, and as is declared by the constitution of pope Boniface VIII of happy memory" means the obedience it goes on to enjoin.
Moreover, making properly (trinitarian) baptized Prots members of the Catholics church makes the words of the Seventeenth Ecumenical Council (Florence) to be of one effect, or merely speaking of a hypothetical group:
"The sacrosanct Roman Church...firmly believes, professes, and proclaims that..not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics cannot become participants in eternal life but will depart `into everlasting fire...unless before the end of life the same have been added to the flock;
It is thus clear that required membership in Christ's Church and subjection to the Roman Pontiff meant obedience to him, versus dissent, and thus would exclude those "who honor Sacred Scripture, taking it as a norm of belief and a pattern of life... within their own Churches or ecclesiastical [Protestant] communities " as being joined a certain communion with Caths in the Holy Spirit, who "with good reason are accepted as brothers by the children of the Catholic Church under the premise that "all who have been justified by Faith in Baptism are incorporated into Christ."
The SSPX and SSPV traditionalists are correct on this one, though just as wrong as their brethren in many other Cath error s. .
Show us where Jesus taught that.
By definition the Pope is the head of Christ's Church.
By definition the Pope is the head of Christ's The ROMAN Catholic Church.
By definition the Pope is Pontifex Maximus, head of Sun-god worship.
