One of Pope Francis' most vocal critics, who was demoted last week from his leadership of the Vatican's Supreme Court, has said he would refuse Holy Communion to any Catholic legislator who voted for same-sex marriage.
Speaking before a Limerick conference on the Catholic family, Cardinal Raymond Burke declined to comment on the Government's planned referendum over gay and lesbian marriage.
However, he said he would refuse Communion to pro-gay marriage Catholic legislators in the same way he did in the case of pro-choice legislators in his native United States.
He also reiterated his call to the Pontiff, made during last month's Synod on the Family, to clarify "at this point" where the Catholic Church stands on homosexual relations and on giving Holy Communion to divorced and civilly remarried couples.

If it's true, then BRAVO for Pope Francis.
Limerick?
There once was a Cardinal named Burke
Who thought Pope Francis a jerk...
someone feel free to finish!
Good.
Cardinal Burke (formerly a Wisconsin Bishop) in the news again.
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
I suppose that refusing communion to people makes more sense economically then kicking such people out of the congregation along and saying goodbye to their monetary contributions to the Church.
Or maybe it just makes sense.
If they’re refused Communion they’ll likely leave anyway.
Good riddance.
That’s not how it works in the Catholic Church. “Kicking people out of the congregation” is something that can be done in a Protestant church, particularly those that were originally very congregation-based (that is, around a particular preacher) and even practiced shunning, etc., to control members. There’s nothing similar in the Catholic Church.
If a Catholic is excommunicated, that means he or she can’t go to Communion or participate in any other sacraments (for example, get married, be a godparent, etc.), until that person has repented, gone to confession, and had the excommunication lifted. The person can continue to attend Mass, but they probably won’t.
The “Refusenik” is Cardinal Burke, not Pope Francis.
The video is available at the ink. The reporting is biased. No wonder the network was refused entrance because there was "no space".
Amen!
Because He Knows what an Error it is for the Priest(Bishop/Cardinal...) to give communion with someone so out of communion with the Church.
Cardinal Raymond Burke You are 100% correct on this, but you don’t need me telling you this, however there are many in the Church that seem to fail on this very basic thing...
From one of my recent post but it fits here well:
“It is an Abomination to God, Thus it is a Sin, Thus Condoning it is not Acceptable, This does not mean you Hate the Sinner. This Means you Call Evil by its Name and the act of Homosexuality is Evil just like Adultery is Evil. Both are Sins and Both Need to be Called out into the Light of Truth. For they are sins of the Flesh where we are living for the pleasure of the flesh (of this World) and not for the Spirit.(of the Next World). They open the door to even greater Sins taking our Souls further from God until the Darkness is Overwhelming...
Call Evil By its Name and into the Light of Truth. This is what Every Christian is Called to Do, Have You? or have you failed to do something?
“Father Forgive me for the Things I have done or Failed to do” sound familiar? (Penitential Act)”
Luckily it seems that Bully Burke the heretic, will have increasingly less frequent opportunities to deny anyone anything!
Good point. Such people arguably take communion for photo-op similarly as Jesus reprimanded the Pharisees for doing.
Burke himself wold repudiate this in a heartbeat.
I understand it's "humor" but it's also adding to the misinformaiton out there.
Moreover, a person turned away from communion is not, precisely, excommunicated. An excommunicated person cannot receive any Sacrament, including Matrimony, Anointing, or Penance, unless the excommunication is lifted.
In contrast, a person denied Communion could presumably return to Communion following repentance and a good Confession (Penance).
But I'm no canonist. I could be wrong. Is that right, Arthur?
With all due respect livius, Matthew 18:15-17 shows that Jesus taught Christians that they must ultimately expel unrepentant sinners from a congregation, people who promote unscriptural teachings in this case.
In fact, note that 1 Corinthians 5 is an example of Paul strongly suggesting that the congregation expel an unrepentant sinner.
So sadly, the Catholic church still hasnt learned from the mistakes of the Corinthian church 2000 years after the fact with respect to still tolerating unrepentant sinners.
That sounds right to me. I would add though, that a public sinner like a pro-gay marriage politician, would also need to publically repent before receiving communion again.
Burke is a champion of orthodoxy. What’s the matter with you?
As for opportunities, whether you know what you’re talking about or not, Cardinal Burke is clearly acting without regard to career consequences — a little of the fourth century mettle that one likes to see in a hierarch. It’s a shame the Orthodox churches have gone squishy on marriage; you shouldn’t smack a good man to compensate for your own sensitivity on certain matters.
Moreover in
is manner he is precise, respectful and not offensive. It's not exactly your place to make that determination about heresy, anyhow, friend Kolo. I respect you as a very knowledgeable individual, but as a member of the Orthodox Church, your understanding of Catholic Canon law may be somewhat lacking.
