"Under conservative assault, Rome says report was 'working document". No kidding. Under "conservative" assault"? No, under common sense assault, because anyone with a brain knows the Catholic Church is not going to call homosexuality (sin) a "valued" trait. Not one thing will change in the CCC of the Catholic Church on sodomites.

When the dust settles, I’m afraid very little will have come of all this.

Abortions have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community.

For the “deniers” the beatings will begin shortly.

Seems to me the press told a story that wasn’t there....

Saying that a group of sinners are still human being deserving of respect is not a change in church doctrine...

Its folks reading what they want to read....

If they really wanted to save the Church. They would scrap 90% of Vatican II. Particularly all the touchy feelly crap about Ecumenical councils and other BS. No reason to move toward the dead faiths of main line Protestants.

Enough is enough!

Under furious assault from conservative Catholics, the Vatican backtracked Tuesday on its surprisingly positive assessment of gays and same-sex relationships.

In a report Monday, the Vatican had said that gays and lesbians have "gifts to offer" the Christian community and acknowledged that same-sex couples can give "precious support" to one other. The statement, an interim report from a closely watched meeting of Catholic clergy here, was widely praised by liberals. It is believed be the first time the Vatican has said anything positive about gay relationships. One longtime Vatican journalist called the statement a "pastoral earthquake"....

....In response to such reactions, the Vatican backtracked a bit Tuesday. In a statement, it said the report on gays and lesbians was a "working document," not the final word from Rome. The Vatican also said that it wanted to welcome gays and lesbians in the church, but not create "the impression of a positive evaluation" of same-sex relationships, or, for that matter, of unmarried couples who live together.

When is an interim report not an interim report? When CNN reports on it!

Vatican backtracks ....

Ha. That's rich. The only one "backtracking" is the NYT from their completely misinformed reporting on the Synod. From George Weigel ...

Thus Elisabetta Povoledo wrote that “an important meeting at the Vatican used remarkably conciliatory language on Monday toward gay and divorced Catholics, signaling a possible easing of the church’s rigid attitudes on homosexuality and the sanctity of marriage.” It would be hard to cram more misinformation into one sentence.

Beyond these typical bits of Times-speak, Ms. Povoledo utterly misrepresented the document on which she was putatively reporting. It was not issued by “a meeting” or by “the Vatican.” It was not an authoritative document in any sense; it was an interim report on themes that had been raised in the previous ten days of debate and discussion at the synod. It had absolutely no legislative weight — synod documents are consultative, not legislative — and I am told by those who were there that various formulations in the report were seriously criticized in the synod debates. Moreover, the interim report will be chewed over in the ten synod language-based discussion groups — where, one suspects, further criticisms will be aired — before any final report is issued. To turn this kind of interim report into the virtual equivalent of a papal encyclical is ludicrous on its face.

Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing to them a fraternal space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a church that offers them a welcoming home. Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?"

I do not believe churches should welcome homosexuals at all. Why welcome the enemy into your midst? Too many people get too uptight about forbidding people entry into their churches, as if they think just getting them into the doors they will magically become Christian. Churches are places where like-minded people come to worship the God they all believe in. If people (like gays) don't agree with the tenets of a given church, they should go elsewhere. This incident with the Synod just shows that gays are nothing but a fifth column.

And no, I am not saying that sinners are not welcome, as all mankind are sinners. If I'm sitting on a pew next to some sinner who is silently struggling with the sin of homosexuality, I have no problem with it. After all, I'm sitting there struggling with my own sins. But if he prances in and lispingly demands to be accepted as an open homosexual he should be thrown out.

“there has never been any Vatican document that made positive, respectful statements about same-sex relationships”

Gee.

And there there has never been any Vatican document that made positive, respectful statements about adultery, or thievery, or bearing false witness.

**Cardinal Raymond Burke, an American and head of the Vatican’s supreme court, said the report “lacks a solid foundation in the sacred Scriptures.” Other conservatives called it a “betrayal.” **

I’m with Cardinal Burke on this.

It’s not as if there is a way of interpreting God’s Word to say that sodomy is A-OK with God...

It’s not a matter of interpretation or opinion.

Such statements seem to be in line with the more merciful approach the church has taken toward gays and lesbians under Pope Francis. In 2013, Francis famously said, “Who am I to judge” gay people?

That is right, you can not judge them but you can keep them from taking over the Church, by keeping them out which is what Paul said which is why I knew that.

This present day equivocal two-stepping by the Vatican makes one wonder if Lutherans and Anglicans didn’t have it right about Rome.

Although I may not be seeing through the confusion created by the Catholic-hating media, I don’t see the Holy Spirit working through the Catholic Church.

Of course not, since the Pope decided to add 6 liberals to the committee to write the document because those who were elected were too conservative.

"Francis famously said, "Who am I to judge" gay people?"

With all due respect to Pope Frances, he is evidently unaware of Paul's words of 1 Corinthians 5:12-13. In that passage Paul indicates that, yes, Christians have the responsibility to judge church members who show by their actions that they have probably rejected Jesus.

No!

It’s the liberals who are backtracking after their hopes for endorsement of their agenda were dashed.
