Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

“”Mary is the intermediary through whom is distributed unto us this immense treasure of mercies gathered by God, for mercy and truth were created by Jesus Christ. Thus as no man goeth to the Father but by the Son, so no man goeth to Christ but by His Mother.” (Vatican Website: Encyclical of Pope Leo 13th on the Rosary, Octobri Mense, Pope Leo XIII, 1903-1914)” Catholic FReepers, please tell me you don’t believe this! Seriously, if you do...repent (change your mind) of it.

they have to...the pope said it.

this is clear blasphemy.

Yes but what I’m asking is what kind of proof do you require/are asking for?

What will convince you?

-— The please show another infallible source for what the apostles taught -—

“Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing... and TEACHING all that I have commanded you to obey” —Jesus

“Listen to the church... If he won’t listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or tax collector.” -— Jesus

The earliest writings of Christians/Church Fathers speak of the authority of the Church. Google, “church fathers authority of the church peter,” or something similar. Compare the arguments of Catholic sources and Protestant sources.

You can also correlate the verses in my tagline to give you a better understanding of the unique office and authority of Peter.

We can trust the inspired nature of Scripture, or Written Tradition, because of the authority given to the Church by Christ Himself. Similarly, the Church is the guardian of Sacred Tradition.

Do you simply take the word of that Catholic Church that they are the same?

In my case I left the Catholic Church based on ignorance, and emotion, but returned based strictly on evidence, logic, and facts + thinking.

You are wrong.

No one here is saying that there is no Church. The gates of Hades have still not prevailed against Christ's Church.RCs onboard are saying their organization is the only church of Christ and their muddled theology the only one that is correct,

Also, you took this passage out of context and/or obscured its context in Scripture. That's akin to lying.

My case is similar, but different. I left the Catholic Church because I came understand the Gospel that alone brings eternal life and entrusted myself to Him alone. I can never return because I spent years studying the Scriptures and thinking about what they mean.

Welcome to the Club for Thinking! There are far too few in the Club. Glad you are thinking too.

>>“Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing... and TEACHING all that I have commanded you to obey” —Jesus<<

No proof that what the Catholic Church teaches today is the same the apostles taught.

>>“Listen to the church... If he won’t listen to the church, treat him as a pagan or tax collector.” -— Jesus≤<

Still no proof their the same.

>>The earliest writings of Christians/Church Fathers speak of the authority of the Church.<<

Apostasy and error was already evident during the lives of the apostles. Revelation also shows that to be true. Early church fathers are not proof of what the apostles taught. It has been shown here time and time again there were differences among them. Not trustworthy in the least.

>>You can also correlate the verses in my tagline to give you a better understanding of the unique office and authority of Peter.<

The authority or primacy of Peter has been shown over and over to be fallacy. Paul himself rebuked Peter to his face. When Christ was asked who was greatest He clearly indicated there was no such thing.

>>We can trust the inspired nature of Scripture, or Written Tradition, because of the authority given to the Church by Christ Himself.<<

Christ did NOT give authority to an institution. The Catholic concept of "church" is none existent in scripture.

>>Similarly, the Church is the guardian of Sacred Tradition.<<

Still no proof that what the apostles taught is what the Catholic Church teaches today. All Catholics have is their faith in their "church". That faith supersedes their faith in Christ.

Depends what is meant by "simply take the word of the Catholic Church". I certainly don't say, "Sacred Tradition is the same as taught by the Apostles because my parish priest says so" and no other reason. If that's helpful.

But I'm asking you, not myself, "What kind of evidence would convince you?" Please note, I do not have a desire at this time to expound on the types of evidences I have accepted.

If you don't want to answer the question that's fine. I was just asking.

That's really being very catholic. They have a very bad habit of doing that.

Well, if the catholic church limited their understanding/useage of tradition to that taught by the apostles we might have something.

Unfortunately, they've gone beyond what the apostles have taught. Way beyond.

My understanding of catholicism was you had to accept the "official teaching" of the church. if you don't now you're practicing what catholics falsely accuse non-catholics of doing...your own interpretation!

aka reading the Bible and letting God speak to you.

Give the infallible evidence that what the Catholic Church under their guise of “tradition” teaches today is what the apostles taught which they referred to as tradition.

Building churches out of body parts and putting them on display for people to fawn over is NOT respecting dead people.

Whatever happened to *Rest in peace*?

Desecrating the dead is abominable.

It does seem, to the carnal mind, as if we should be able to do SOMETHING besides believe that Jesus is the Christ and Son of God to win God's favor and our salvation.

But there really isn't, although most followers want/need to be baptised as Jesus was. And even THAT knowledge (and assurance) was a graceful gift to Peter and to the rest of us who have received The Truth in the good soil. Man did not reveal that knowledge to Peter; God the Father did.

Upon that revelation alone and not on the person/lineage of Peter (aka Rocky), Jesus Christ (The Rock) founded his Church.

Any thing I say more than "You are wrong" gives protestants the opportunity to blather on endlessly.

Why is Scripture to be considered BLATHER by you?
