Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

I learned patience many decades ago when I was learning to crochet and then later when I did genealogy research. The first item I crocheted was supposed to have been a sweater for my then 3 year old daughter. It was so tightly crocheted, it fit a doll. I kept plugging along and finally got to where I could crochet without even looking at what I was making. Did you know that people around me thought I could not hear so I learned lots of interesting things? : ). Now, with my eye problem, I do not crochet as much. Have an appt with an eye surgeon on the 21st to schedule eye muscle surgery. Am not looking forward to this at all.

“Why do hundreds of millions of Catholics abandon their faith and no longer practice it?”

because they got divorced - virtually every fallen away Catholic I know who “became” protestant was divorced

I am happy to trade 100 divorced and fallen away Catholics for one protestant bible scholar like Scott Hahn who converts to Catholicism

>>there is no paganism in the liturgy<<

Next time you look at the monstrance with its sunburst think Babylonian sun god. Next time you see a priest wear that mitre that looks like an open fish mouth think priests to Dagon the fish god. When you see the crescent moon think babylonian pagan moon goddess. Wonder why statues of Mary often have her above the crescent moon? I could go on and on. The Catholic Church readily admits where much of their rituals, vestments, and practices come from.

Scott Hahn is a hack.

I would rather have 1 penitent former Roman Catholic than 100 Scott Hahns.

BTW, I haven’t met any divorced former Papists in any of the Reformed churches I have been a member of. They were bitter though. Bitter at the joy sucking nature of the Roman Church they grew up in.

Pinging a couple former Papists to see what they have to say.

“because they got divorced - virtually every fallen away Catholic I know who “became” protestant was divorced”

You generalize your experience in this regard. How do you explain non-divorced catholics who no longer practice? There are many.

While your experience may point to one kind of person who leaves, how do you explain whole countries like Belgium where the vast majority of catholics never darken the door of a church?

“I am happy to trade 100 divorced and fallen away Catholics for one protestant bible scholar like Scott Hahn who converts to Catholicism”

I’m happy to follow the Savior who “died for the ungodly.” I would wonder why anyone who claims the name of Christ is happy to see “fallen” people leave.

I am happy for Mr. Hahn to worship wherever he prefers.

You are wrong.

I have Music Choice channels and I listen to those more than any other. I love Easy Listening, the Christian channel and the oldies music. I have always loved music.

Yes, Catholics can gamble and drink, (although not get drunk)but ANYTHING to do with sex outside of marriage is an automatic Mortal Sin! You go to Hell forever.

“Better question...

Why do hundreds of millions of Catholics abandon their faith and no longer practice it?”

Easy. Either they are bored with mandatory Sunday Mass, OR they have given in to sexual temptation. Either way, automatic Mortal Sin. You go to Hell forever.

No. ALL sins are covered by the blood of Christ. Recall that Christ said even if you just think about adultery it is a sin.

We do ask for forgiveness and He will forgive.

Not the case with any of the former Catholics I know. I don't know any former Catholics who left the church because of a divorce issue.

They don't need to.

If they choose to remain Catholic, they can obtain a church sanctioned divorce aka an annulment.

I was single at the time I left the church and not in a relationship, so your broad brushing fails.

What you posted at #171 was just Christ --- only Christ, Him alone --- speaking of His own precious Blood, illustrated by your devil-blood cartoon.

I see it's been removed by the Admin Moderator. I did not hit the Abuse Button on you, but apparently I'm not the only one who saw was it was, a blasphemy against Christ.

No, your post --- look at it again --- had nothing to do with Catholicism per se. It was a quote from Jesus Christ our Lord speaking of His Blood, and you paired it with a devil cartoon mocking the Blood.

Perhaps you don't even realize what you did.
