“Why do hundreds of millions of Catholics abandon their faith and no longer practice it?”
because they got divorced - virtually every fallen away Catholic I know who “became” protestant was divorced
I am happy to trade 100 divorced and fallen away Catholics for one protestant bible scholar like Scott Hahn who converts to Catholicism

When I registered with FR in 2005, I first tried to make my username: Lurkingsince98. Too close to yours apparently.
Scott Hahn is a hack.
I would rather have 1 penitent former Roman Catholic than 100 Scott Hahns.
BTW, I haven’t met any divorced former Papists in any of the Reformed churches I have been a member of. They were bitter though. Bitter at the joy sucking nature of the Roman Church they grew up in.
Pinging a couple former Papists to see what they have to say.

You generalize your experience in this regard. How do you explain non-divorced catholics who no longer practice? There are many.
While your experience may point to one kind of person who leaves, how do you explain whole countries like Belgium where the vast majority of catholics never darken the door of a church?

I’m happy to follow the Savior who “died for the ungodly.” I would wonder why anyone who claims the name of Christ is happy to see “fallen” people leave.
I am happy for Mr. Hahn to worship wherever he prefers.
Not the case with any of the former Catholics I know. I don't know any former Catholics who left the church because of a divorce issue.
They don't need to.
If they choose to remain Catholic, they can obtain a church sanctioned divorce aka an annulment.
I was single at the time I left the church and not in a relationship, so your broad brushing fails.
