Pope Francis is at risk of an assassination attempt by the Islamic extremists of Isil, the Vatican has been warned, ahead of his first visit to a Muslim-majority country this weekend.
As the 77-year-old pontiff prepares to travel to Albania on Sunday for a one-day visit, Iraq's ambassador to the Holy See said there were credible threats against the pontiff's life.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church could also be vulnerable when he travels to Turkey in November, the ambassador said.
Jihadists from Isil have in recent weeks boasted of wanting to extend their caliphate to Rome, the heart of Western Christendom, and have talked of planting the jihadist black flag on top of St Peter's Basilica.
Habeeb Al Sadr said there were also indications of a more specific threat against Pope Francis, who recently spoke out in favour of the US and its allies halting the advance of Isil in Syria and Iraq.>
"What has been declared by the self-declared Islamic State is clear – they want to kill the Pope. The threats against the Pope are credible," the ambassador told La Nazione, an Italian daily, on Tuesday.

The ambassador said the Pope had made himself a target by speaking out against the human rights abuses committed against Christians in Syria and Iraq, as well as by his approval of attempts by the US to try to roll back Isil.

Pray for the pope, ping!
Wasn’t the last guy who shot at a Pope also a muslim?
Would that start up the Crusades again? Probably not.
Talk about holding a grudge...sheesh
Mehmet Ali Agca - most definitely a Muslim.
This isn’t the first time.
“Would that start up the Crusades again?”
A crusade? No. An angry response by a number of Catholics? Probably.
And he was recruited by the KGB’s Bulgarian field office.
No. Most people are too wimpy to fight against anything anymore.
Do you know of a link for that? I’d like to add it to my bookmarks to read.
What worries me is that I’m not sure how good the security is around this Pope. He loves to get out there like an ordinary guy, and take chances.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church
The Catholic Church encompasses many rites.
I think it is in one of the books written by former Lt. Gen Ion Pacepa. Here is a link to an interview in which he talks about the Soviet disinformation campaign against Pope Pius XII
HEar, hear....what YOU said.
These freaks want to kick off a great holy war, I guess they figure Allah has their back. Initially I thought it was a dumb idea to behead innocent westerners, with American apathy they could have carved up a nice slice of that pie for themselves without resistance. Rile up the American public and the might of the US military will get involved. So why would they do that? Because ISIS is betting the farm on their boy, I do believe they sincerely think God is on their side. If true, these people are not just dangerous, they’re reckless, the type that would unleash highly contagious absolutely fatal pathogens on the world “knowing” only the “infidels” will suffer.
I understand your frustration and it is justified but I work with some great teens here in SoCal. I’m talking about the ones that come back and volunteer to help after confirmation. Help with leading small groups, prayer sessions and anything else that is needed. They have a strong spirit and are not afraid to express their faith in public. They still need and want help in how to communicate their beliefs to the world. There is fight and steel in them (I am ex military). I have hope and will continue to support them. God bless
Thanks so much! <3
With Francis/post Vatican II pope at the helm? LOL
