Pope Francis has been a breath of fresh air for many Catholics seeking greater liberty and a growing concern for conservative Christians who take issue with his comments about homosexuality and other cultural issues.
But the pontiff's latest statement is sparking an uproar from believers around the world. Pope Francis sent a tweet Tuesday that absolutely violates the truth of Scripture:
"The Christian who does not feel that the Virgin Mary is his or her mother is an orphan," Pope Francis tweeted.
As of the time I wrote this column it had been retweeted about 4,000 times and many of the responses were in appropriately unkind. It's not appropriate to attack the pope for his beliefs. It's more appropriate to share the truth...
Like I said. Do some research on pagan beliefs, vestments, rituals etc incorporated into the Catholic Church.
Thank you for posting that. My computer died so I don’t have access to any of my research files right now. I’m using my phone so am really restricted.
Hi Mom!
I haven't read in the bible where God likes anything about paganism or false idols. That is why you have to quote from the Encyclopedia of Catholicism, instead of the bible. That should be a hint on which side you find yourself on.
Like me!
It is said Mary lived here.
Interestingly at the main gate they have some full blown syncretism on full display at the gift shop. Mary and Turkish nazars for sale! Nazars protect the owner from evil eyes.
Incorrect... Mary would be called Christotokos, like Nestorius proposed and the RCC rejected, if the RCC believed the she were merely the Christ Bearer. Theotokos means bearer of God... putting her in the category of the Devine.
Hmmmmm....if the Pope tweets something from the chair of Peter, is it considered infallible and inerrant?
Theology can be so confusing in this electronic era. :O)
Here you indulge in a form of wholesale mind-reading & attributing of motives to others, as if you had some special insight into their hearts and minds despite what is plainly and simply enough said by many of them as to their own motivations, side-stepping those as if you truly knew them better than they know themselves, your own doing so in continuance of the generalized mischaracterization and false allegations which you first began with, that prompted my own initial comment to you in the first place.
There is bit of unfinished business we should address before moving on to this new aspect or iteration of your initial claim as to motivations of others.
When or if there can be any comments found which do in fact express open "disrespect" for Mary, please feel free to point those out to me more precisely where that has occurred.
If that cannot be done, then admit it, and we could then more freely move on.
Its blatantly simple.
Mary is the Mother of God the same way it is said that God died on the cross for our sins.
Its that simple.
Those who can’t see there being a necessary communication between what is predicated of the humanity of Jesus and in his divinity have not engaged the question.
To say otherwise is to be an unbeliever in the salvation of man by God. Since therefore the humanity of Christ was not fully assumed by God. Consequently, it was not therefore fully saved by God.
There are actually plenty of biblical reasons for calling Mary Queen and Mother, if a person is genuine about actually making a study of it. Many people have. Their research is available online.
I’ll give up and take a guess that you are in the habit of falsely describing other people’s beliefs.
No one who uses the term “theotokos” believes that Mary is God or created God.
You say they do, and you lie when you say so.
Jude 1:3
Gal 1:8
Both show that the scripture preached by the apostles was and is and forever will be all of the scripture given to man
I noticed that for all the accusations of ignoring Scripture on this thread, no one says anything about the third post which quotes John 19:26,27 and reads in part: “Behold, your mother.” Mary didn’t give biological birth to John. There’s no evidence that John’s father remarried Mary. So why does Jesus tell John that she is his “mother”? Also, why does Jesus call Mary “woman” in John 19:26? Jesus calls Mary “woman” because he is alluding back to the “woman” in Genesis 3. The first “woman”, “Eve”, caused man’s fall because in her pride and disobedience, she ate from the tree. The new “woman”, the new “Eve”, by her humility and obedience, aids in mankind’s redemption by her “Yes”, by her giving birth to the Savior who hangs upon the new “tree” on Calvary.
It’s good that many on here love the Word of God. But there’s often not a very deep penetration of it. Jesus’ mention of “woman” and “mother” on the Cross are not meaningless asides or the mere mentioning of future living arrangements.
“And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. ... and his mother kept all these things in her heart.” -Luke 2:19,51
If Mary is so meaningless, why is her prayer life mentioned twice in Luke 2?
Is there a profundity to her prayer life that the rest of us don’t enjoy? One can’t only “read” the Scriptures, one must “PRAY” them, seeking with the aid of the Spirit to enter into their deeper, layered, and multiple meanings.
Finally, Catholics don’t worship Mary as a goddess but they honor her as the Mother of God. Disrespect shown to Mary is a VERY RECENT development within Christianity. Even Martin Luther and Calvin were very respectful of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To say that Christians since 431 have gotten Mary wrong and that only very recent Christians have corrected the supposed error of the ancient Church and centuries of Christians much closer in time to Jesus and Mary seems quite prideful to me.
I guess I'm an orphan then.
(But then; I was BEFORE I read this ridiculous claim.)
So have I; and many consider ME nuts; too!
I am qualified to be POPE!!
to Catholics; maybe!
I feel a twinge of nausea!
I dont like the RCC telling me what I should or shouldnt believe about her based on their theology and worship of Mary.
She's got TIME for that???
Let's try some easy math:
There are approximately 1.2 billion Catholics world wide;
If merely 1% of them 'ask' Mary for help just once each day;
that means that 12 million separate prayers are headed Mary's direction every day.
Given that there are 86,400 seconds per day... (24 hours times 60 minutes times 60 seconds)
...that means that Mary has to handle approximately 139 'requests' per second!
Purty good fer someone NOT 'devine'!
Catholicism says that stuff NOT found in Scripture is NEEDED for the salvation of souls!
