To be fair, this sort of thing has been repeated by anti-Catholic polemicists since the 16th century. Or before.
The grounds for the complaint may vary, but the intensity of the hate is quite traditional.
The good (or not so good) professor is writing in quite an old tradition and has a lot of interesting company.

Eh. A college professor indulges in his 2 Minutes of Hate by calling the Catholic Church barbaric and Medieval, but is too much of a coward to call Islam barbaric and Medieval. So what else is new?
More than an atheist, the professor is an anti-theist (as are most of these angry “scholars”).
His faith in unwitnessed cross-species evolution is more valid than my belief in an unseen Creator.
