Romeward Bound: Evaluating Why Protestants Convert to Catholicism
Center for Reformed Theology and Apologetics ^ | 05/31/14 | David Hagopian

The Wizard of Oz has fascinated adults and children for many years. You know the story: a farm girl from Kansas finds herself in the middle of an unwelcomed adventure in an attempt to find the fanciful wizard, who, she hopes, will help her return home. After many trials and tribulations, she, along with her newfound friends, ultimately arrives at the Emerald City only to discover, much to her chagrin, that the "wizard" was really no wizard at all. He wasn't much of anything. In modern parlance, he was a wimp.

Believe it or not, many-a-Protestant claims to have experienced a disenchantment similar to that of Dorothy. And like the disenchanted Dorothy who just wanted to go home, so too these disenchanted Protestants want to go home. The home these Protestants long for, however, is not the home they left behind. These Protestants are Romeward bound.

True, the number of Protestant converts to Catholicism is less than the other way around. And there are less actual converts to Rome today than during previous points in the history of Catholicism. Nevertheless, there is something unique about this modern conversion phenomenon, since "the kind of converts appears to be quite different, with fewer obligatory conversions for such reasons as marriage. A significant number of Protestant evangelicals...are among those moving to Rome...."

Many evangelical Protestants are converting to "Roman obedience." Or, in the words of one such convert, they are "getting churched" or "poping." Jocularity aside, it is important for Protestants to come to grips with the reasons why these Neocatholics have set their compasses toward Rome, only then will Protestants be able to see some of the shortcomings of their espoused faith. Only then will they be able to meet the needs of those who are "taking the plunge."

Left off deliberately, dishonestly and typically.

I know I have eternal life in Christ and I need never fear being cast out, lost or plucked from His hands.

"For we must all be manifested before the judgement seat of Christ, that every one may receive the proper things of the body, according as he hath done, whether it be good or evil."

“Your contention is that “notable” Catholics who convert to Protestantism are doing so by “breaking a vow” or they were “terribly catechized”.”

That is not my contention nor is it an argument. It is simply a statement of fact.

“You have made several other comments on this thread that condemns Protestantism as “adultery” and, by definition, all Protestants.”

False. I made no statement “by definition”, about “all Protestants.” I did make a statement - more than one - about the adulterous nature of the collection of heresies known as Protestantism.

“I know what you meant and I have no desire to play your word games.”

I don’t play word games. I simply post the truth.

Since I have become Catholic I know several people who have left the church and without fail they quit because they never heard the Bible in the Catholic Church and I just shake my head

They are the ones at Mass with ear plugs in. ;)

These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. (I John 5:13)

For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (Jon 3:17-18)

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. (Romans 8:1,2)

The following sentence was excised from that quote:

“But what Catholicism is, I have come to discover, is true.”

Every person here who believes in Truth should ask himself why someone would post a quote without posting the most important sentence which explains the rest of the quote. Gee, what would be the motive of such a person?

And how long would that post - no matter how true - be allowed by the powers that be to stay up???

There are daily Mass Catholics and then there are lazy people.

IOW, all your fellow Catholics who don't make it to mass daily are lazy, eh?

So if someone is a faithful, every Sunday attending Catholic but doesn't go EVERY SINGLE DAY, they are lazy.

I'm sure they greatly appreciate your assessment of them and know all their circumstances which allow you to pass that judgment on them.

The last part of that quote is merely opinion.

Nor did it have to do with the condemnation of the church in the first part of the quote.

The Church beats people and isn’t attractive.

Not very Christlike, therefore, not true and not true to Christ.

Nope! Not "fact", your opinion.

Not "truth", your opinion.

Like I said, word games.

Like I said, hypocrisy.

"Notable" Protestants that convert to Catholicism - Wonderful! Brilliant! Hooray!

"Notable" Catholics that convert to Protestantism only do so because either they have broken a vow or they didn't know the Catholic faith, terribly catechized. It's kinda sad how bigotry and prejudice can blind someone to the foolishness of their opinions.

Gee, what would be the motive of such a person?

Every person can see that Metmom was commenting on the first paragraph of the post and not the "last sentence" which was not part of that paragraph. She said:

And what it did was beat me, but it didn’t draw me, entice me, or lure me by playing upon some deep, latent psychosis or desire on my part for something Protestantism just couldn’t provide. Catholicism went from being so obviously ridiculous that it wasn’t even worth bothering to oppose, to being something whose claims were so audacious that I couldn’t help opposing them. But what it never was, was attractive, and in many ways it still isn’t.

Thanks for the admission. OTOH, JESUS is very attractive. And HE doesn't beat one up. He draws and leads and guides, in gentleness. His yoke is easy and His burden light. He came to set us free, not drag us into bondage but beating us into submission.

Her comment would in no way be changed even IF she included that separate sentence. It's almost comical the lengths some people go to accuse others of evil motives and nefarious purposes while they make bigoted blanket statements that castigate and impugn the motives of an entire faith tradition and call it FACT.

“The last part of that quote is merely opinion.”

By definition then - according to your definition - then the rest of the quote was just opinion as well. Yet you only posted part of the material I posted.

“Nor did it have to do with the condemnation of the church in the first part of the quote.”

Oh, so because it showed that “condemnation” to be meaningless you didn’t include it? Exactly. Thank you for so effortlessly confirming what anyone could guess.

“The Church beats people and isn’t attractive.”

The Church has certainly beaten your falsehoods with the truth. You prove that with every post.

“Not very Christlike, therefore, not true and not true to Christ.”

What isn’t Christ-like is to post only past of a quote when all of it is necessary for context.

No, fact.

No, fact.

No, fact and truth are not word games. They are simply fact and truth.

“Like I said, hypocrisy.”

The hypocrisy is all yours.

“”Notable” Protestants that convert to Catholicism - Wonderful! Brilliant! Hooray!”

No, just meaningful.

“”Notable” Catholics that convert to Protestantism only do so because either they have broken a vow or they didn’t know the Catholic faith, terribly catechized. It’s kinda sad how bigotry and prejudice can blind someone to the foolishness of their opinions.”

Name all of the “notable” Catholics you know from the last 10 years who have become Evangelical Protestants. Remember, these people must be notable AS Catholics, not just notable people who happen to be nominal Catholics. If you fail to mention any, or fail to mention even 5, what will that tell us? How many “notable” Catholics are there who become Protestants? How many are well catechized?

I suspect that you will fail utterly and spectacularly. Prove my suspicion wrong.
