Sister Jane Dominic Laurel was tossed under the bus so frequently last week that I hope she will be able to get the tread marks out of her habit. A vibrant teacher of Catholic orthodoxy on sexual morality based on Pope John Paul IIs Theology of the Body, she had given lectures around the country with no controversy until she gave a presentation at the hilariously misnamed Catholic High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, and some parents and their spoiled brats decided to stage a massive hissy fit.
The diocese of Charlotte wasted no time in cowardly apologizing for the presentation of Sister Jane. Go here to read all about it.
Now, her own order and Aquinas College are sending her under the bus:
From Sister Mary Sarah, O.P., President of Aquinas College:
The events around the recent talk by Sister Jane Dominic Laurel, O.P. in Charlotte, NC have produced a great deal of speculation from many sides. Among the commentators, there are few who were actually present to hear the talk, which was not recorded.

This seems to be the presentation that she gives:

No, we wouldn't want this mad woman providing instruction in Catholic high schools. Sheesh.
On the plus side, maybe this controversy will drive traffic to her site. I wouldn't have been listening to her presentation otherwise. I'll have my teenage kids listen to it, too. It's a great resource.
“All the people whom the Holy Spirit chooses to tell the truth to the people of God suffer persecution.” -Pope Francis, Mass homily, Friday, April 4, 2014
Weasels in habits are still weasels.
The attempt to separate two academic disciplines (anthropology and sociology) from being scrutinized by the faith and morals taught by the Catholic Church worries me. There is nothing that explores and/or attempts to explain human behavior, human relationships, cultures, and societies that falls outside the purview of Catholic teaching.
This is because the concern of the Church is not with making sure an opinion passes peer review, it is with Truth. Our Truth is found not in any certain school of thought or politics or ideology. It is found in the person Jesus Christ and it is against His teachings that all truth must be measured against and held accountable to.
Sister Jane, did not go outside her area of expertise. She did have valid studies and papers that supported what she had said. But even if there had not been any scholarly articles agreeing with what she said she had every right and authority to speak the unpleasant truth about human behavior and relationship, especially those formed that go against Catholic teaching.
Pray for Sister Jane and pray for the cowards who forget the fight is not to be loved by the world but to share Glory with Christ, Our Lord, for all eternity.
The more I think about this, the more I suspect that this was the best excuse that the president of the college could come up with.
JPII's "theology of the body" is not orthodox.
Being thrown under the bus..... instead of getting a bus and some gas money like those famous ‘nuns on the bus’ lobbying heroines....
Luke 12:49-53
Bring the fire, Sister!
Sounds like the Diocese of Mozilla.
**instead of getting a bus and some gas money like those famous nuns on the bus lobbying heroines....**
Shouldn’t that read ?
instead of getting a bus and some gas money like those famous nuns on the bus lobbying dissenters....

This talk was very inappropriate. I would withdraw my kids from this school.
Please read the attached document so you can more fully discover what the church really teaches about sex education.
Let the confused parents take their kids out and enroll them in the fine public schools who will teach them the “tolerance” they want them taught. Were they just interested in the superior acedemics and favorable school ratings and not interested in a Catholic education. Or running from problems found in public schools, such as bullying, immorality, drugs, shootings, etc.
She should be given a medal for actually having the spine to tell the truth about the evils of sodomy. The HIGH SCHOOL students at the Catholic High School are quite familiar with the evils of sodomy and perverted sex acts that are contrary to God’s law. If the liberal, democrat parents don’t want their children to hear the Catholic truth, then they have no business calling themselves Catholic and they need to pull their almost grown little democrat children out of the school. End of story.
The Aquinas College president initially send the Catholic School a letter of support for the sister in question and said she was a great teacher on the subject of homosexuality and the Catholic Church. Only after the heat came from the little cafeteria catholic Obama supporters did the second letter come out criticizing the presentation. The spineless president of the Aquinas College then threw the good sister under the bus. In otherwords she chose the almighty dollar over the Word of God. This cowardly administrator should be ashamed to call herself Catholic. She should be fired and Sister Jane Dominic given the job as president of Aquinas College.
Believe me, I know it perfectly well. There was nothing “inappropriate” about her talk. I’m not a big Theology of the Body fan, but it is perfectly legitimate and taught about in many places. In any case, they weren’t objecting to that.
They were objecting to the fact that she used studies to back up her assertions that God’s plan was a healthier way for man to live - children of stable male-female marriages were happier, did better in school, etc. If you’re trying to convince kids that their choices have an effect in the real world, you have to give them something solid.
Many of both the parents and the students supported her and her message, but they were shouted down at the meeting by the liberal shock-troops.
I’ll see if I can hunt it down.
I am a Catholic and I have very conservative views. It is obvious that I will continue to prefer the Catholic homeschooling I give my kids to the education given at this institution.
Surely you can recognize as legitimate the opposition to this nun’s talk from the right side of the political spectrum?
Same thing ... lobbyists can be both... unless they are deemed to be on the wrong side of the media’s view of the world or oppose the wrong politicians...
Those nuns played the parts of lobbyists better then some...that’s why they got a bus and gas money...
groveling to their real god- government- lobbyng to have that god do more so that god of government gets the glory..
Told me a lot about their faith
I hope the local bishop is on the phone with the college president. Even if he is, he has little control over the board. Since lay boards took over Catholic schools in the sixties (Land of Lakes Conference), it's been pretty much all downhill.
