THE PROTESTANT’S DILEMMA BY DEVIN ROSE: A REVIEW
Just a writer, who refuses to typecast his blog by giving it a title ^ | March 18, 2014 | Scott Eric Alt

Posted on 03/19/2014 1:32:10 PM PDT by rwa265

If a Protestant looking into the claims of Catholicism were to ask me, “What one book should I read, where I can find a quick answer to any question I have?” I would tell him to read Devin Rose’s new book The Protestant’s Dilemma. I would also recommend this book to Protestant apologists, even those of many years, well-skilled in polemics. It will remind them of the heavy burden of proof they face, and the weakness of their position on point after point. The truth may set them free and bring them home too. (It has happened.)

All this may seem like overstatement — the obligatory praise from one Catholic blogger to another. But it is not.

Consider first the range of issues this book takes up. There are thirty-six chapters, each one on a different topic, from the papacy to sola scriptura, from the canon of the Bible to Purgatory, from confession to Eucharist to infant baptism. If something about the Catholic Church troubles you, this book has the answer. If you think you have found the point on which Catholicism fails, this book will show you why it is one more point upon which Protestantism fails.

Consider also the brevity. The book is just over 200 pages long, which means that Mr. Rose’s answers get to the root of the question without a knot of academic detail. It is harder to do than it might seem. This is the book of a man who has spent a long time studying the questions that divide Protestants and Catholics, and who knows how to present his case in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. At the same time, the book is useful for the professional apologist, for it recalls his mind to the basics.

So the death of Christ on the cross, almost two thousand years ago before any of us were born, for our sins has no impact on our future position in Christ??

So I’m guessing Ephesians 1:12-15 has no impact when the Bible says we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit?

Again, I ask the question....if you don’t have the opportunity to confess to a priest do you go to Heaven or Hell? Does that disqualify everything Christ did on the Cross??

btw....based on the Word of God I’m in.

I’ve been adopted as one of His sons according to Romans.

I am one of the whosoever believes shall have eternal life.

I’ve been sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise.

I know my sins have been forgiven by Christ and they are separated as far as the east is from the west.

It is my sincere prayer you have this comfort as well.

>>At least when I go to Confession, I know my sins are forgiven and I know God has forgotten them too.<<

That is one of the saddest statements I have ever seen. Jesus said to go before the throne of the Father in His name. Catholics have so little faith that Jesus can do what He said He would do they need some carnal human. My faith is in Jesus not in some guy behind a screen who may or may not have diddling some young boy on his mind.

The death of Christ on the Cross didn’t confirm for you your sins were forgiven if you believe?

“”A prince, while he is a little child, is presumably as willful and as ignorant as other little children. Sometimes he may be very obedient and teachable and affectionate, and then he is happy and approved. At other times he may be unruly, self-willed, and disobedient, and then he is unhappy, and perhaps is chastised—but he is just as much a prince on the one day as on the other. It may be hoped that, as time goes on, he will learn to bring himself into willing and affectionate subjection to every right way, and then he will be more princely, but not more really a prince. He was born a prince” (C.I.Scofield, Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth).”

Where is that in the Bible?

Seriously; you don’t have to keep proving you are not Christian.

I literally cringe when I read post that treat Jesus’ mother as if she were some loathesome animal that is being worshipped by pagans.

Golly!

Captain Hyperbole can't stand that either!

Matthew 12:36-37 "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

If we believe, we will believe every word. If we all appreciated Jesus greatness, we would all be too humbled than to assume knowledge of the hearts of others, or the self proclaimed entitlement of God's Salvation.

I don't pretend to be all knowledgable but when it comes to discussions about our Father in heaven, I have no doubt that humility and kindness are what real Christians will offer.

How do we share the Gospel with others if we ourselves don’t know we have His Salvation?

We believe Christ died for our sins. But we also know that all humans, following in human nature after Adam and Eve are sinful. Thus we do not believe in OSAS.

God forgives our sins. Why do you have a problem with that?

Catechism of the Catholic Church

1449 The formula of absolution used in the Latin Church expresses the essential elements of this sacrament: the Father of mercies is the source of all forgiveness. He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:

God, the Father of mercies,
through the death and the resurrection of his Son
has reconciled the world to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins;
through the ministry of the Church
may God give you pardon and peace,
and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Are you doubting the power of God? Strange! For God forgives our sins.

You really need to read scripture rather than Catholic deception. It’s not “through the church”. It’s through Christ.

1 John 2:12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.

Romans 4:7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Ephesians 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

Put that Catholic propaganda that wants to keep you in bondage in the garbage and start getting into scripture to find the true freedom Christ brings.

None of which apply.

1) speaking the truth is not an ad hom.

14) Speaking the truth is not poisoning the well.

16) Please show me an example of Elsie adding to the conversation, rather than just making smart aleck comments

You keep saying “through the church”. Do you believe that God forgives sins “outside” of the “church”?
