Updated: *167* Bishops (More Than 90% of Dioceses) Have Spoken Out Against Obama/HHS Mandate

In the past I’ve compiled a list of all the bishops speaking out on a particular controversial issue (for instance, over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Obama) — here are the bishops who have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

[See my ongoing coverage of Obama/HHS's war against religious liberty herehere, here and most recently here. I'm also tweeting more updates @AmericanPapist.]

If I have missed anyone please let me know in the comments! And please double-check that your bishop really is not there before posting.

Items in bold mean the statement was read at all diocesan Masses or included in all parish bulletins on Sunday.

Thank you to AmP reader Matthew for helping me group these bishops by province!

Province of Anchorage:

Province of Atlanta:

Province of Baltimore:

Province of Boston:

Province of Chicago:

Province of Cincinnati:

Province of Denver:

Province of Detroit:

Province of Dubuque:

Province of Galveston-Houston:

Province of Hartford:

Province of Indianapolis:

Province of Kansas City:

Province of Los Angeles:

Province of Louisville:

Province of Miami:

Province of Milwaukee:

Province of Mobile:

Province of New Orleans:

Province of New York:

Province of Newark:

Province of Oklahoma City:

Province of Omaha:

Province of Philadelphia:

Province of Portland:

Province of Saint Louis:

Province of Saint Paul and Minneapolis:

Province of San Antonio:

Province of San Francisco:

Province of Santa Fe:

Province of Seattle:

Province of Washington:

Archeparchy of Philadelphia (Eastern Rite)

Metropolita of Pittsburgh (Eastern Rite) + Sui Iuris:

SPECIAL MENTION: “The Assembly of Orthodox Bishops in North America just issued a formal statement of protest against the HHS mandate in which the Assembly, representing all 53 Orthodox bishops in North America, references their complete agreement with the statements of the USCCB.”

THANK YOU to everyone who has helped me build and correct this list.

NOTE: If you would like a statement by an Eastern Rite bishop to be included please send me the link/document or post it in the comments! Thank you. I’m trying to provide documentation for all the bishops listed and Eastern Rite bishops have been harder for me to track down. Thank you for understanding!

UPDATE: Of the 183 dioceses (by my count) in the U.S. who have a bishop currently serving as its head, 167 of them have issued statements. So more than 90% of bishops who head dioceses have spoken out against the Obama/HHS mandate.

A very large contingency of Catholics are Socialists. I’m one that’s not.

Archbishop Chaput’s remarks are great, but that has little to do with the wide support Obama’s received in 2008, and up until today. Obama campaigned on Socialism, but I guess the stench of tyranny wasn’t strong enough to overcome the sense of rapture. Today, they will deny the appeal of universal healthcare, wealth distribution, amnesty — it’s only a denial, not a conviction.

This is a turf war, not a war against Socialism, not a war against abortion.

I’m right on this. If I were wrong, Obama would not have been elected to POTUS.

Are you even paying attention? This thread is about the Obamacare mandate, not illegal aliens.

I'd have more trouble trusting whatever little cult you belong to. Its members sole purpose is to tear down the Catholic Church -- no matter what the issue, no matter how much obtuse twisting and lying must be engaged in, *they* always find a way to drag the Catholic Church thru the mud.

"What other name have you posted under?"

None. But I can list all of yours...Gamecock, HarlyD, count-your-change, alex murphy...

Its common courtesy to ping everyone mentioned in a comment, but since all those accounts are you, there's no need, eh?

FYI, each of those links leads to “page not found” and mentions sight reconfiguration recently.

Thanks for the heads up on those links. The USCCB did reconfigure their site. Guess I’ll have to search it out.

I’m so sorry that you did not get the gist of this thread. It is about Bishops and others (in the links — even Baptists and Jews) who are against Obama’s mandate to take away religious freedom.

If the religious freedom of the Catholic Church is squelched you can bet that the religious freedom of your Christian denomination will also be squelched.

Please read it again.

Thanks for your concern, but my response was appropriate to the comment I was answering.

Talk is cheap. Roman Catholics put Obama in office. We’ll see if they make that same mistake again.

Lolol. I’d be honored to have authored any of their fine, Scriptural posts (that would be all of them) but you just popped up a few months ago and already seem to know me when I’ve never conversed with you even once, IIRC.

Hmmm...

(And such a charming name you have)

I am honored to be accused of being one in the same as the incomparable Dr Eckleburg!

Shucks, I remember back when the good Doctor posted only in plain text!

Perhaps you have not seen this --- Catholics weren't the only ones who voted for Obama -- even people from your denomination! Oh Horrors!

Catholics hear anti-Obama letter in church (Some idiots wanted "change" so they got it)
Has Obama Lost the Catholic Left?

Obama won the overall religious vote, 52 percent to 46 percent, reversing President George W. Bush’s 51 percent to 48 percent “values voter” victory over Democratic challenger Sen. John Kerry in 2004. Obama also won the Catholic vote, persuaded young evangelical voters to choose him and began to squeeze shut the so-called “God gap” yawning between religious Democrats and Republicans during the Bush era.

How will the roughly 9.1 million evangelical Christians who voted for Obama vote in the next election? Will Obama's actions compel the 31.2 million evangelicals who didn't vote in the 2008 election to vote next time?

Obama Receives 77% of Jewish Vote-- More Than Kerry
White US Catholics move toward GOP, Hispanic Catholics toward Democrats
Among Catholics, Obama job approval rating decreases to 50 percent

Same here. As most here knows, it was Dr. E and the former Dr. SteveJ who showed me the “Reformed” light. I can’t take credit for being Dr. E.

The Catholics never have a problem supporting people like John Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, etc. And they certainly don’t have a problem burying people like Ted Kennedy with full Catholic honors after years and decades of passing laws that are anti-Christian (e.g. funding abortion). I suspect they’ll do the same for Nancy Pelosi or John Kerry when their time comes.

I hate to sound cynical but the only reason the Catholics are so rightfully passionate about this is because it will cost them money. It has nothing to do about Church belief, whatever the favor of the day happens to be. It’s all about the bottom line. It has been since the days of Luther.

As far as people of “our” denomination goes, the Catholics here are always telling us there are 30,000 Protestant denomination. So which one are you referring to?

Scriptural posts? Ha...

No, I don't recall conversing with you once, but I read FR for years, before I signed up. Do you think anyone, even a casual observer, could miss the unbelievable shlock posted by a certain doctor in the religion forum?

"The Catholics?" I never supported any of those people. None of my Catholic relatives supported them either.

By that logic, "The Protestants" have never had a problem supporting Robert Byrd, Daniel Inouye, Mark Pryor...(all protestants.)

And which denomination am I referring to...Notice I said "whichever one" you belong to, because while the views its members on FR espouse are massively un-Christian, very few of them, even when asked point blank, will say exactly which denomination it is that they (currently) belong to.

Ashamed of it or what? Or is that you don't want to risk arguing with each other over differing beliefs, because you'd rather just fight with the Catholics? Or maybe some of them know that they are members of such crazy cults that their reforming buddies would drop them like a hot potato if they knew.

The possibilites are practically endless, no?
