Meet Mitt Romney’s cousin (Uh-oh!)
The Washington Post ^ | February 2, 2012 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 02/03/2012 6:05:16 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Park Romney says some pretty wild things.

Mormonism, he writes on the Web site parkromney.com, “is an insidious contemporary fraud.”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is “an American cult,” he professes.

Mitt Romney, he claims, would be conflicted in office because “obedience to the leadership of the Mormon Church is part of the covenant of the temple ordinances to which Mitt Romney is absolutely a party.”

Were you to come across a man articulating such views on a street corner, you probably would give him a wide berth and look over your shoulder to make sure he wasn’t following you.

But Park Romney, apostate Mormon, is no street-corner eccentric. He is Mitt Romney’s second cousin. Church documents and archival research done by The Post’s Lucy Shackelford trace Park’s lineage to Miles Park Romney, who is also Mitt’s great-grandfather.

The two men have never met. (Miles Park Romney had 30 children, which means Mitt Romney has scores of cousins.) And, based on what Park has been writing, he’s not likely to get a dinner invitation from Mitt anytime soon. “Gov. Romney has never heard of this person, and he doesn’t know him,” campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said....

I heard Kris Kobach sometime this week on one of the local KC-Metro television stations say he is working on his own time for the Romney camp... What it really means, I have NO clue, given these days of mindless confusion and the perfection of deception.

Smiles won’t hide a pro-Romney, anti-Newt post.

Bishop Romney is the anti-conservative, this is good news that a victim of his cult is willing to come out and help us expose Romney’s cult.

Conservatives need as much insight into the Romneys and the Mormon cult, as possible, to stop him.

Let me try to put this a different way.

I think that attacking a political candidate because some relative disagrees with them is, in general a silly argument.

I guess it is unfortunate that in this case, the person being attacked is Mitt Romney, because in the end I’m not really allowed to argue that the tactic is inappropriate, if it is used against Romney.

People had similar problems arguing that we shouldn’t be attacking candidates for making money and investing it and receiving investment income — I think that is a silly thing for a conservative to say, but because the target was Romney, I guess none of us was supposed to object to the line of attack.

So I apologize for saying something that would detract from making fun of Mitt Romney, especially since the story is about a guy who, apparently, has left the mormon faith, and is concerned about others in the mormon faith. I shouldn’t have compared HIM to ronnie reagan, for example (I wasn’t trying to attack Herman Cain’s wife either, like I said I was arguing against blaming candidates for their family members, not suggesting every such family member was a real problem. I’m guessing it’s OK to compare ronnie reagan and Gingrich’s ex-wife and Santorum’s wife’s ex-boyfriend, but that wasn’t my intention).

The Bishop is his religion, what we see is just a tiny portion of the man.

To know just how unacceptable and dangerous the anti-conservative is, we have to know who and what he is, and he is a powerful cult figure first, in his own eyes, perhaps even the fulfillment of prophecy in his cult, as some Mormons think he is.

We can afford to cover all of the man as political enthusiasts, we know that the Democrats will if he gets through the primary.

Sorry, I saw the 1st line, and immediately thought about how someome tried to attack Santorum a couple of weeks ago for something his wife did before they met, and her ex-boyfriend.

It was only after ansel12 attacked me that I realized the implication. He’s totally wrong that my post attacked Gingrich though — it was a defense of Gingrich and Santorum, against attacks using people from their family.

But this article was a lousy example to use as a launching point, because as I should have known and would have if I had read it, the story wasn’t some crazy cousin who was a hyper-devout mormon (yes, that’s what I thought I was reading), but in fact a guy who left the faith and is speaking out against it. Having totally screwed up my understanding of that (because as I said I only read the 1st sentence), what I wrote, which is exactly how I feel about the general type of smear attack, wasn’t applicable to the specifics of the article.

Which is why I apologized above.

Too thick, either can’t see or doesn’t want to see.

The courting and converting of illegals explains all the RINOs gunning down Perry and siding with Romney. I couldn’t tie it together until now.

God help us if latinos in general are supporting mittens.

You are a liar and a conman, this ex-Mormon has been hurt by Romney's cult, the man is speaking out against that cult.

This is about souls, and you mock it in service to Romney, as our most devoted Romney supporter at freerepublic you attack Reagan and Gingrich, and push Romney, man the pro-Romney routine never changes.

So nothing about this article, or the comments under it, alarms you about Romney?

From the White House ‘insider’:
http://newsflavor.com/politics/us-politics/white-house-insider-the-obama-plan-part-two/

Insider: None of this is beyond the norm though. Where it gets different for the Obama campaign is what I’ll just call the Obama Plan. They are going way beyond simply working up your typical campaign scenarios against potential opponents.
The president – I was told of this about a week ago, maybe two weeks ago…(pause)… the president actually considered quitting. He really did. But now he’s going on the attack. He wants to give a big F-You to White America – that’s actually one of his primary motivations.
You think the race card has been played up before? Just wait. 2012 is gonna be the most brutal political cycle we have ever witnessed. Ever.

Ulsterman: How? What’s the plan? What’s going to be different from all the other campaigns?

Insider: You’ve already seen it. A taste of it. Race. The race card. Racism. Race-race-race. It’s all they f**** got to run on these days.

Ulsterman: Race? Hasn’t Obama played that one out already? It’s become a joke.

Insider: Played it out? No, not…you might think so but no…his people are going to raise the issue of race to a level this country hasn’t seen since the Civil Rights movement.

Insider: EXACTLY. Don’t you understand it then? How race – that very thing that pulled his a$$ out of the fire back in 2008 – that’s the plan for 2012.
But even more of it. They got an entire plan to utilize it. Targeting certain states. A media campaign. Use it as a weapon against prospective opponents – the Romney people better be ready because he’s gonna get his a$$ kicked with the race issue and he won’t even see it coming. They better have their boy prepared for that…

Ulsterman: You really believe Barack Obama would go that far to win in 2012? He would be willing to engage in that kind of tactic? Just how far would he go?

Insider: (Pauses)… As far as it takes. We’re preparing for it. I sure as hell hope America is too. Like I told you…this election coming up…Brutal.

"His sentiments, unfortunately, are not fringe views: As my Post colleague Charles Lane pointed out recently, more than one in five Americans, Democrats and Republicans alike, tell Gallup they wouldn’t vote for a Mormon presidential candidate from their own party. And now we have Newt Gingrich flirting with that segment of the population on the stump: He’s calling for a defense of “our religions” and accusing Mitt Romney of discriminating against Catholics and Jews."

My opposition to Romney is based on Romneycare and his support for things like raising the minimum wage.

I saw an article from a leftie, skimmed a sentence or two, thought it was about the opposite of what it was about, and jumped to a wrong conclusion.

I have read the article. I don't see what you are so incensed about regarding what I said relative to the article. The article is written by Dana Milbank. I think we are supposed to respect the man being talked about, but Dana Milbank calls the guy crazy.

And what am I to make of this from the article:

The gay rights group Pride in Utah has embraced him as a spokesman (“Mitt Romney’s Cousin Speaks Out”).

If I say I support park, am I going to get attacked for defending a gay spokesperson?

There are freepers here who have direct knowledge of the mormon faith, and I believe they are much better examples of the issues of that faith than this guy Dana Milbank drug out -- who the article says has never met Mitt Romney, and doesn't actually appear to be talking about anything specific that Mitt Romney did.

But I am simply not getting involved in the discussion of Mitt as a Bishop. I'm not attacking people for it, or discussing it, or saying anything about it. It's not something I want to get into in any way.

I just don't see how this left-wing article can become a rallying cry for anything. Here's a few more quotes from the article that I'm supposedly evil for not embracing:

There were Neil Bush’s S&L problems, Roger Clinton’s cocaine and Hugh Rodham’s pardons. ... As Meghan McCain can tell you, sharing a presidential candidate’s surname can be good for business. ... Richard Nixon’s brother Donald took a bailout from Howard Hughes
The article mentions a long list of various political personalities who had family members that were problems. In fact, Milbank mentions Obama's relatives, and then compares Park to them. Dana even noted that Romney brought up Obama's illegal uncle Omar. I couldn't tell if Dana was saying you shouldn't attack candidates for their family, or that you should, or was just being the typical crazy writer he always is.

Are you really going to rake me over the coals for not jumping to some conclusion about a column by DANA MILBANK? We regularly dismiss whatever Dana says, and even reading the entire article, I don't see it being a profound indictment of the cult of mormonism that you seem to think I'm not responding to strongly enough.

I defended Rick Perry when he was attacked because a pastor who introduced him had called Mormonism a cult. You should remember that, it was back when you were a Perry supporter, and people were getting on Perry for being associated with the pastor.

We have to get some data on latino support for mitt. Until this thread, I assumed no support but hadn’t looked, either.

the other candidates shouldn’t be judged by their relatives

I agree..

Just because Park Romney is a decent man doesnt mean we should assume his cousin Willard Mitt Romney is too...
