MITTERFIRMIANSREUT, Germany — A church built entirely of ice and snow has opened in Bavaria — a century after villagers first built a snow church in an act of protest.

The church at Mitterfirmiansreut, near the Czech border, is more than 20 meters (65 feet) in length and boasts a tower. It's made up of some 1,400 cubic meters (49,000 cubic feet) of snow.

I’m surprised they’ve got that much snow already — I live in Warsaw and this year we’ve just had a pattering of snow on the 16th of Dec and then nothing.

With any luck, they'll stand in a puddle of their own making...

What does the name of that town mean: Mittefirmiansreut ?

All I got from Google translate was that mitte can mean middle and reut can mean sorry.

“Mitter-” means in this case indeed middle and there are two othe villages called Vorderfirmiansreut and Hinterfirmiansreut.
They were founded by “Fürstbischof Leopold Ernst Kardinal von Firmian” in 1764 so there is the middle part and “-reut” is just an old word for a settlement in the woods.
