My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

Not my belief. I'm just sayin'.

I hear ya, some protestants say believers have to handle snakes and drink poison to show their faith, not my belief, just sayin'.

Yes but not for those from the camps..and Jordon doesn’t want them as they create great chaos in his country. Course we know they are simply cannon fodder over the years...and none of the other ME countries want them either...they pay them to stay right where they are and in poverty...pays to have an avaiable suicide bomber camp to call on and recruit from.

St. Dominic - pray for us

Since you pinged me about your petitioning your prayer to a dead individual I will have to make clear I do NOT join you in praying to the departed .....or anyone other then the risen Christ....as He clearly taught us He is the one we are to petition and make our requests to.

It is by and thru Christ's life, death and resurrection we have access to the Father.. for ALL power and authority has been given Him alone...there is no other.

FLOG that dead horse! I think I saw him move a little.

Of course, I don’t think Dominic is dead. YMMV.

That will leave a mark.

I don't get it, and I don't see a mark. It just seems like the usual difference of opinion about time/eternity, love, heaven, ... all the stuff we differ about.

Some find their joy in helping others. Evidently others think it's a nuisance.

How is what caww said "flogging that dead horse"?

2Tim. 4:2:" Preach the word, be instant, in season, out of season: reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

It is not Scriptural to pray to Saints. When stonehouse posted to pray to St. Dominic, that was unscriptural. Caww did exactly as God's word says. Explained, with Scriptural doctrine, that Christ is our mediator. Simply explained. The other option was to let the post of stonehouse stand, unanswered. To not answer is in a way, to agree. Hardly flogging a dead horse, to explain Scripturally why caww cannot be in agreement in prayer with stonehouse to a dead saint.

Of course they can. How about riding a bicycle and singing? How about sight-reading piano music? Or a choir sight-reading a new anthem? Or marching band members playing their instruments and reading their music while marching in formation?

Which is the cross of Christ..biking or singing..?

The examples you gave are not MEDITATING on 2 things at once ..they are rote behavior..

I’ll cut to the chase:

It’s not Scriptural to read Scripture the way, say, dispensationalists do.

It’s not Scriptural (if Maccabees is in your Bible) to think you can’t or ought not pray for the dead.

It’s not Scriptural to think that we and the blessed dead are not in the koinonia of the Spirit one in Christ through whom all prayers are heard.

Are you edified? Neither am I edified by the return at least every two months of this subject, this flogging.

The ark is a type of Christ.. the entire OT points to Christ..not his momma ...

to make a type of Christ a type of His mother is blasphemy..

Edified? Hardly. Nor am I edified by someone leaving a lingering post to pray to a dead saint. And assuming everyone will be in agreement.

Let me cut to the chase:

If you do not know where you are in God's word, you will end up praying to dead saints to help you. You will end up praying to Mary to interceded on your behalf. You will end up believing every wind of doctrine that blows in the wind, including the idea that you cannot know what God has said in His Word. And must depend on others to explain it to you.

The "flogging" will continue as long as longsuffering and doctrine continue for reproof and rebuke and exhortation.

Yes, the horse has been dead for years on these threads.

If we were to try to discuss and debate the issue, I believe it would reduce to two aspects: intercessory prayer and the Communion of Saints. These could be argued on scriptural grounds, exegesis.

I believe it is likely agreement would be found on intercessory prayer. I’m not certain all would agree, we see some posts which seem to deny its efficacy or propriety.

I think the area of greatest disagreement would be on the Communion of Saints. I believe its original meaning has been lost in some areas of Protestantism.

I don’t know when this occurred; I would be interested to learn when it occurred and why.

That is if we wished to discuss instead of flog.

Oh my.

Where does it say that one thing cannot be a type of more than one thing? Jesus has first dibs and doesn’t share?

(I was talking about the ark of the Covenant, not Noah’s ark.)

That is a completely charming article.

Since the ark was most definitely NOT God, it would seem blasphemy would apply to making it a type for Jesus.

Your statement:

There is no way one can focus on the the events in the life of Christ and be concentrating on the hail Mary at the same time

My reply: Of course they can. How about riding a bicycle and singing? How about sight-reading piano music? Or a choir sight-reading a new anthem? Or marching band members playing their instruments and reading their music while marching in formation?

Your sarcastic question: Which is the cross of Christ..biking or singing..?

I don't know what you intend by that, but I do know I can hold my grandchild on my lap in front of the piano, and see his grandfather's exact expression of interest and thought, as he touches the keys one by one. At the same time, my heart can hold in memory my last embrace with his grandfather, as he reaches up to pat my face.

Thanks for asking, whatever.

My examples of complicated actions were intended to show that people are capable of complex and intricate behaviors, what was your question intended to show? That people are by and large ignorant? We all go by our experiences, don't we?

But you have definitely convinced me that YOU cannot hold an image of Christ being crowned with thorns, in your heart, while praising His mother. Congratulations!

Why do you hate Mary so?

This is a ploy to put ya on the defensive ..if ya don't put Mary on a throne as co redeemer with the child she bore the you MUST hate her...ignore the fact that Gods word says not word one to support this.. just put her in a bathtub in your front lawn..put an altar in front of her in your church, pray to her and then you have proper respect for her

This is the sign of complete disregard for the word of God. To not worship her (sorry, hyperdulia her) is to HATE her. Where is the room for the truth of her, from the Scriptures?

I've seen her somehow installed in the back of pick-up trucks, rolling down the road. Here's Mary, loaded up in back, somehow bringing peace to the driver as he travels the road of life, and I-45.
