My Faith: Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), from Catholic to Muslim
CNN ^ | 9/1/11 | Chris Welch

Posted on 09/02/2011 9:07:47 AM PDT by marshmallow

Minneapolis, Minnesota (CNN) –Prior to 2006, few people even knew that then-Minnesota state legislator Keith Ellison was a Muslim. Because of his English name, he said, no one thought to ask.

But five years ago, when he ran for a seat in the United States House of Representatives - a race he would go on to win - word of his religious affiliation began to spread.

“When I started running for Congress it actually took me by surprise that so many people were fascinated with me being the first Muslim in Congress,” said Ellison, a Democrat now serving his third term in the House.

“But someone said to me, ‘Look Keith, think of a person of Japanese origin running for Congress six years after Pearl Harbor–this might be a news story.’”

Though Ellison's status as the first Muslim elected to Congress is widely known, fewer are aware that he was born into a Catholic family in Detroit and was brought up attending Catholic schools.

But he said he was never comfortable with that faith.

“I just felt it was ritual and dogma,” Ellison said. “Of course, that’s not the reality of Catholicism, but it’s the reality I lived. So I just kind of lost interest and stopped going to Mass unless I was required to.”

It wasn’t until he was a student at Wayne State University in Detroit when Ellison began, “looking for other things.”

I am confused that this is an issue.

If our Lord says do this in memory of me then he means a replay is necessary

There is no way Our Lord would have come into a sinful womb.

HE was circumsized; but WHY?

If HE was 'god', why a SIGN?

Genesis 17

10 This is My covenant, which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you shall be circumcised.
11 And ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant betwixt Me and you.
12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner, that is not of thy seed.
13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised; and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

At other times it’s about tearing down the strongholds We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

(2 Corinthians 10)

I am confused that this is an issue.

I sense this.

WHY do you consider it NEEDED?

This circumcision is coming out of left field- What does it have do with Mary’s perfect womb?

There is no way Our Lord would have come into a sinful womb.

Sinful wombs don't have a nifty ziplock opening, either:

"The Early Church Fathers are almost unanimous in the assertion that the birth was painless and had no loss of Mary's virginal integrity during the birth. In other words, her Hymen didn't break. St. Augustine said "Jesus passed through the womb of Mary as a ray of sun passes through glass"....This was confirmed by Pope Paul IV and many others before and after. If Jesus emerged from a sealed tomb, and passed through closed doors, surely he could pass through Mary's womb without breaking her hymen and causing her pain."
-- from the thread Did Mary retain her virginal integrity while giving birth to Jesus?

I don’t consider it needed - the language suggests it-

Dear Alex - Yes -Oh I have thought this myself but this is even better - the sealed tomb - emerged.

Thank you - you made my day. I love the early Church Fathers. I am a mother of 5 daughters (1 deceased) and I did the natural childbirth - no drugs. There was pain - trust me - yet Mary is the new EVE

Mary is the new EVE

Since through Eve the original fall occurred it is through the 2nd woman mankind would be restored. There is no term for a second Eve, but there is a last Adam. In 1 Cor.15. Jesus is called this because both Adam and He had a supernatural birth. God blamed Adam for the fall; Jesus brings us back from the fall to restore us to God (not Mary).

Eve had other children, Eve also fell before she had other children; Eve had sin. If there is any correlation, so did Mary.

(Let us reason

I believe it is written SHE brought forth a son and his name....etc Natural childbirth is easily acceptable as how Christ came into the world

Mary did not. She is the ark of the new covenant. The new covenant is pure.

The correlation is that Mary was an anti -Eve and produced perfection.

If Mary was the same as Eve then justice would not have been wrought.

He said “It’s not that God loves us because we’re good; we’re good because God loves us.”

Actually that is a quote from CS Lewis

Catholics tell me she is also the New Ark of the Covenant. Some have gone on to say that her body would have struck Joseph dead (just like the first Ark in 2 Samuel), had he tried to consummate their marriage. IOW, she remained a perpetual virgin via the promise of instantanous death to anyone who dared to touch her.

Not my belief. I'm just sayin'.

Do you honestly think that if Mary hadn’t been assumed that she wouldn’t have people there?? (at the site)
God the Father brought her up so she would not have to endure the people;

The lack of a mention of Mary after Pentecost where she received the Holy Spirit with the rest of those attending says that Mary was not a factor in the foundation of the new church .. She was most likely buried with her husband.

Seeing we do not have the burial places of many of early Christians it is not surprising ..

What is surprising is that seeing a dead mary lifted up into the heavens got not one mention in the letters written to encourage the new church
