Pope exonerates Jews for Jesus’ death

Pope Benedict XVI has made a sweeping exoneration of the Jewish people for the death of Jesus Christ, tackling one of the most controversial issues in Christianity in a new book. In Jesus of Nazareth-Part II excerpts released on Wednesday, Benedict explains biblically and theologically why there is no basis in Scripture for the argument that the Jewish people as a whole were responsible for Jesus' death. Interpretations to the contrary have been used for centuries to justify the persecution of Jews. While the Catholic Church has for five decades taught that Jews weren't collectively responsible, Jewish scholars said on Wednesday the argument laid out by the German-born pontiff, who has had his share of mishaps with Jews, was a landmark statement from a pope that would help fight anti-Semitism today. "Holocaust survivors know only too well how the centuries-long charge of 'Christ killer' against the Jews created a poisonous climate of hate that was the foundation of anti-Semitic persecution whose ultimate expression was realised in the Holocaust," said Elan Steinberg of the American Gathering of Holocaust Survivors and their Descendants.

Very interesting! I didn’t post that picture though. I linked it as an illustration in a post about censorship.

My main post on this is at post #58. I’m sure few have read it.

I believe the scriptures in what is written...not some doctrines, traditions, commandments of men...in the churches teachings....

Php 3:2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision.
Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
2Pe 3:17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
Tit 1:14 Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

We’ve seen it here all before. What’s sad is that most of the folks who do it never get embarrassed by it, even after showing them how wrong they are.

I have to wonder how many innocent Jews were burnt alive as heretics because some Galician archbishop didn't comprehend the Latin demonstrative pronoun or 'vocative vs. nominative' case in some Papal bull as written in illuminated Gothic blacklettering by a Austrian/Germanic monk acting as Vatican secretary who had only a slim conversational grasp of the medieval Romanisch-Italian language he was supposed to be transcribing.

To a non-Cathnolic; you are typing in tongues.

To about 3,000 not less. But while it was wrong to justify punishing Jews because of what their fathers did, just as it is wrong for blacks to hate all white people because of slavery, we do enter into other men’s labors, for good or for bad. And which God takes into account, according to the principle of Lk. 12:48 - “For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required..”

While the pope’s intention was noble, from what we read, he negates or ignore some things in certain texts.

“When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.” (Matthew 27:24-25)

The Pope writes:

When in Matthew’s account the “whole people” say: “his blood be on us and on our children” (27:25),These words are not a curse, but rather redemption, salvation. the Christian will remember that Jesus’ blood speaks a different language from the blood of Abel (Heb. 12:24): it does not cry out for vengeance and punishment, it brings reconciliation... It is not poured out against anyone, it is poured out for many, for all. …

Jesus blood is redemption for the contrite who trust in His blood (Rm. 3:25) and not their merit or church to save them, however, this refers to blood-guilt, and was a curse to such as these who rejected Christ, and all souls are under a curse before they are saved.

“And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.” - Josh. 2:19:

“And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles. “ (Acts 18:6)

Paul there deals with Jews as a class, for in general they rejected Christ and so in general were blinded:

“Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. {20} Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: {21} For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. “ (Romans 11:19-21)

“{14} For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: {15} Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men: {16} Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost. “ (1 Thessalonians 2:14-16)

Paul also affirmed that as a class, “The Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.” (Titus 1:12) And to be a Gentiles was in general to be particularly immora., (1Pt. 4:3). But all of which allows for exceptions.

But rather than hardening his own heart against Jews by nature, Paul speaks of a special love for Israel that i think every Christian should have:

“{1} Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. {2} For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. {3} For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. “ (Romans 10:1-3)

“{4} But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. {5} Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. “ (Romans 11:4-5)

Important and relevant post.

” Here’s the Catechism of Trent (AD 1566) which teaches the same thing taught by today’s Catechism which is exactly what the Church has been teaching for 2000 years and will continue to teach for all the time that separates us from the Second Coming: Christ died for the sins of ALL of humanity, represented by Jews AND Gentiles in the account of his Sorrowful Passion:

“[...]REASONS WHY CHRIST SUFFERED

The reasons why the Saviour suffered are also to be explained, that thus the greatness and intensity of the divine love towards us may the more fully appear. Should anyone inquire why the Son of God underwent His most bitter Passion, he will find that besides the guilt inherited from our first parents the principal causes were the vices and crimes which have been perpetrated from the beginning of the world to the present day and those which will be committed to the end of time. In His Passion and death the Son of God, our Saviour, intended to atone for and blot out the sins of all ages, to offer for them to his Father a full and abundant satisfaction. Besides, to increase the dignity of this mystery, Christ not only suffered for sinners, but even for those who were the very authors and ministers of all the torments He endured. Of this the Apostle reminds us in these words addressed to the Hebrews: Think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself; that you be not wearied, fainting in you minds.25 In this guilt are involved all those who fall frequently into sin; for, as our sins consigned Christ the Lord to the death of the cross, most certainly those who wallow in sin and iniquity crucify to themselves again the Son of God, as far as in them lies, and make a mockery of Him.26 This guilt seems more enormous us than in the Jews, since according to the testimony of the same Apostle: If they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory;27 while we, on the contrary, profess to know Him, yet denying Him by our actions, seem in some to lay violent hands on him.

CHRIST WAS DELIVERED OVER TO DEATH BY THE FATHER AND BY HIMSELF<> But that Christ the Lord was also delivered over to death by Father and by Himself, the Scriptures bear witness. For in as (God the Father) says: For the wickedness of my people I struck him.28 And a little before the same Prophet filled with the Spirit of God, cried out, as he saw the Lord covered with stripes and wounds: All we like sheep have gone astray, every one hath turned aside into his own way: and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.29 But of the Son it is written: If he shall lay down his life for sin, he shall see a long-lived seed.30 This the Apostle expresses in language still stronger when, in order to show how confidently we, on our part, should trust in the boundless mercy and goodness of God, he says: He that spared not even his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how hath he not also, with him, given us all things.31 *

Yeah, what pomposity of the main-stream media journalist who wrote this up. That isn’t what the Pope said — like other “controverseries”, this is one made up by the media and guess what — you and the others fell for it hook line and sinker

There is still a portion of the “evangelical” church that looks forward to future divine wrath against Jewish people after the Church is safely out of the way.

Ah, the Rapture folks -- hey, I never taught of it that way. So, the idea is that after the Rapture, the unbelievers and the Jews will be left behind...

Some of the replies to this thread made me wonder if I hadn't opened Democratic Underground by mistake. The anti-Catholic hatred and the ignorance around here are appalling, worthy of BBC, CNN or the New York Slimes. I would like to think that what I read was all coming from liberals but I would be deluding myself

welcome to the religion forum!
