400 years ago Catholics looked on Protestantism as a cult of Christianity that lead people to hell, and looked on Protestants as not really being Christians. Clearly they've changed their minds a bit over the years on that.
In time, the same thing will happen with respect to Mormons IMHO. In fact it largely has already. While there are still some who speak of Mormons the same way that Catholics spoke of Protestants centuries ago, society in general recognizes The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a Christian group.
For example:
Beliefnet.com lists Latter-Day Saints as a part of Christianity: http://www.beliefnet.com/Faiths/Christianity/Latter-Day-Saints/index.aspx
Wikipedia: "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (abbreviated as the LDS Church, and colloquially referred to as the Mormon Church) is a restorationist Christian religion" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints
Likewise the definition of 'Christian' at dictionary.com doesn't require adherence to orthodox dogma. Nor am I aware of any reputable dictionary or encyclopedia that says otherwise.
Here on FR when you go to post to the Religion forum you have the option of checking off what denomination(s) the post applies to. In there it lists the category of "Other Christian" as being specifically for "7th Day Adventist, Churches of God, Messianic Christians, Unitarian, LDS, etc."
This of course is separate from the question of what set of teachings is actually correct. Christ taught that not all who lay claim to his name will have a legitimate claim, and in the end He will be the judge. That's fine with me.
Jimmy Buffett?
Easy!
Some MAN (woman) comes along and asks ignorant folks "...did GOD really say..." and TEACHS them something different.
HMMmm...
As many as 120-180 folks were killed by MORMONs on the FIRST 9/11 terrorist attack.
I wuz wondering which of them it wuz.
obviously you didn’t read post 241 or arejust building straw men arguements like BO does all the time.
“...or arejust building straw men arguements...”
[psst: If you want to stay undercover, you have to mispell different words than your previous LeGrande identity. mum’s the word]
LeGrande.....I not only read it, but I responded to it and answered all of your misinterpretations and corrected your context in Post 254. The question is not whether I read 241 but did you read 254?
Or have you read Titus 3:5 which says, Not by works of righteousness [deeds].....but according to HIS mercy he saved us.." You cannot add anything to God's mercy. When you do you rob Him of His glory and power.
Galatians 2:16 which says, "....for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified."
Galatians 2:21 which says, "....for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain."
Ephesians 2:8 which says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves...."
Romans 1:17 which says, "...The just shall live by faith."
Romans 3:20 which says, "Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight:...
Romans 3:28 which we've already been over and you've yet to respond to which says again, "... man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law."
Have you read ANY of the above? You've got one verse supporting your argument. I've got several. In fact I've got whole chapters and sections and BOOKS of Scripture supporting mine. If ever there is a straw man argument based solely on ONE VERSE, its yours. But hey just for the sake of argument let's say you're right. Its faith PLUS works.
Then what? How good do you have to be LeGrande? How many commandments must you keep? Sacraments? Creeds? Even if you try and keep them all is that still good enough to meet GOD's standard?
Romans 3:10 - "There is NONE righteous...."
Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
And once again James 2:10 - For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
Therefore you're going to have to meet 100% perfection if you're going to get to Heaven through your own merit, or even attempting to add to Christ's work of the cross. 100%. Can you honestly say to yourself you are 100% perfect? That's the standard.
Also, going back up to Galatians 2:21 again, by adding to the cross Christ's sacrifice and shed blood is meaningless. Christ said his work was sufficient when he proclaimed on that cross It is finished! in John 19:30. If there were ANYTHING that needed to be added to God's grace and mercy Christ lied. Because then it wasn't finished was it? By adding to the cross you've also slapped Christ smack in the face and have told him his shed blood isn't GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU. It must be added to.
What makes you think that God will accept that? If His grace and mercy ALONE isn't sufficient for you why should God ever let you anywhere near His kingdom?
bttt
Also, in keeping the golden rule, most posters try to stay with the subject of the thread - in this case, "Mormon and Christian" - because they would not want another poster coming onto one of their favorite threads changing the subject.
Cv,
Remember, leGrande is a former Mormon- now atheist. He isn’t catholic. He just likes the roll of a troll - stirring things up. You’re playing his favorite song...
Yeah I know. But my thinking was he will not be the only one reading this thread. There will be others currently deceived by the faith + works dogma that have never considered (or taught) what the Bible really says about it.
I don’t think its ever a bad idea to reaffirm what the Bible has to say about what truly justifies and the real message of the Gospel.
LeGrande fails to understand that his faith plus works mantra applies equally to Mormons as well as RCC’s, so that can be addressed and still hit the heart of Mormonism even though he thinks he’s deflecting into a Christian against Christian fight. Not so.
AMEN!!!
"My word will NOT return to Me void...
Beautiful. Selah!
