Survey: Americans don't know much about religion
Associated Press ^ | 28 Sept 2010 | RACHEL ZOLL

A new survey of Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons outperformed Protestants and Roman Catholics in answering questions about major religions, while many respondents could not correctly give the most basic tenets of their own faiths. Forty-five percent of Roman Catholics who participated in the study didn't know that, according to church teaching, the bread and wine used in Holy Communion is not just a symbol, but becomes the body and blood of Christ. More than half of Protestants could not identify Martin Luther as the person who inspired the Protestant Reformation. And about four in 10 Jews did not know that Maimonides, one of the greatest rabbis and intellectuals in history, was Jewish.... On questions about Christianity, Mormons scored the highest, with an average of about eight correct answers out of 12, followed by white evangelicals, with an average of just over seven correct answers. Jews, along with atheists and agnostics, knew the most about other faiths, such as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism. Less than half of Americans know that the Dalai Lama is Buddhist, and less than four in 10 know that Vishnu and Shiva are part of Hinduism.

And people doubt that Obama could sit in the pews for 20 years and not absorb anything Rev. Wright was saying? Sounds like he was just doing what everybody else has been doing— attending church without thinking about a blessed thing!.

Yes, but pending further notice or mortal coil shuffle time, it's the only one we've got.

I live in a Mormon town, about 90% LDS. I’ve had many occasions to probe what they know about the Bible and their religion. I would define most of them as biblically and doctrinally illiterate, including their leaders.

Just my observation.

And as we cast off the internal controls that are a part of Christian belief,

we have to accept more external controls in order to maintain an ordered society.

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom”
and the converse is also true.

I wonder if the poll questions were written by Mormons and slanted toward knowledge that Mormons would know.

The LDS org is always trying to do whatever it can to shine a bright light upon itself.

I’m betting they don’t know their own doctrine very well -

like why there are no crosses,
why they do “communion” with water,
that God was once like a human and transformed, just as Mormons will transform into gods.

For “not being Christian,” Mormons sure do exhibit more knowledge about what it is!

Uh...

You spelled DISTORTION wrong...

God gave man the Ten Commandments...

Now HERE is an example of just what the TITLE of this thread is seeking to prove!

HE did NOT give them to 'man' but to HIS 'chosen people'.

Just my observation.

Your experiences are quite wild spread; if MORMON posters on FR are any indication..

Well; how CAN they???

Even their very secr SACRED Temple Rituals® are not to be found in ANYTHING that the LDS religious organization claims as SCRIPTURE.

Strange Crazy world indeed!
