Prayer for DrewsNana's Triple Bypass Heart Surgery

Posted on 02/09/2010 8:41:38 AM PST by DrewsDad

My mother-in-law, Barbara, is scheduled for triple bypass surgery Wednesday(2/10) Morning at 7AM Central Time. She is actually registered as a FReeper as DrewsNana, but only posted once about 5 years ago.

Please pray for a successful surgery and complete recovery. Pray for peace of mind for her and the whole family - husband, son and daughter(my wife-drewsmom).

Also pray for a peaceful resolution among family members to provide her with a clean(smoke-free) environment at home for healing. She also has glaucoma issues.

She is a believer and recently concluded one of her emails with"...God , Thank you for loving me and dying on the cross for me...for your precious love and saving grace Amen."

Good to hear.

Praise God.

Plus one.

We should remember to praise God for what he does and not just pray for what we want.

Good news.

As one having had similar surgery:
- Be patient. Her world is pain now, however well she is taking it.
- Encourage her to use available painkillers (Percocet in particular) regularly. No waiting until it hurts; it’s GOING TO HURT (we’re talking 8 on 1-10 scale) so just keep her system on a consistent dosing of painkillers.
- Encourage her to call the nurses for ANYTHING. Never wait, never think something is “trivial”. If it’s out of the ordinary, it needs attention. Trust me.
- Thank every nurse/doctor/caretaker for every visit. Every single one, every time.

Once home:
- Be wary of painkillers. Pain is a message - listen to it, don’t bury it.
- Don’t overdo it. She will - get her to stop.
- Going to bed will become quietly terrifying: upright or horizontal are OK; transitioning is very painful.

Thanks for the update. Prayers are continuing for Barbara! My procedure lasted 11 hours on Monday, but I was able to come home yesterday afternoon. At least I got some sleep last night. I’m NEVER able to sleep in the hospital.

UPDATE

I am thankful for your prayers and a Great God who answers them. DrewsNana's surgery lasted about 2 1/2 hours and they only needed one vein from her leg. She woke up yesterday afternoon about 2PM and could respond by squeezing their hand. It was difficult for her husband to watch while they pulled the ventilator and other tube out of her throat around 5PM. After that she could talk but was still in quite a bit of pain. All her vital signs were great.

This morning she was sitting in a recliner and eating orange jello. She was a bit grouchy though. The cardiologist checked on her and told her she was beautiful, and she told him he was full of it. Then the surgeon stopped by and removed the drainage tubes. She had a little bit of nausea, so we blamed it on the color of the jello. Orange is not well-liked in this family.

This evening, they brought her some real food - roast, roasted potatos, and cooked carrots. They are waiting for a room to open up in the cardiac unit so they can move her there. All vital signs are "textbook". I'm not sure a triple bypass goes much smoother than this.

We really appreciate your prayers and advice. They mean a lot to us.
