LDS Church exclusion of members access to their own records 2008
WikiLeaks ^ | September 8, 2008 | WikiLeaks - Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons)

Posted on 12/17/2008 4:58:58 PM PST by aMorePerfectUnion

This document is very brief. It is a screen shot of the LDS Church MLS program showing an individual Member Record screen with an alert box displayed with the following text and buttons:

"Members may not have copies of their membership records. Under no circumstances may membership records be given to anyone other than the bishop or a clerk. Although members may not have copies of their membership records, they are encouraged to have copies of their Individual Ordinance Sumary (IOS) for themselves and any dependent children living at home ("Church Handbook of Instructions," [2006], 145)."

'To print an IOS, please go to the Membership Records panel and click More. Then go to the Print Record Panel and click on Individual's IOS. Are you printing this record for a Bishop or Clerk? Yes (button) No (button) "

Screen Shot...

Keep from Members!

Seems a member of the Mormon church is prohibited from having a copy of their own membership records.

Description (as provided by the original submitter)

1. A cursory Google search doen’t show that this document or its subject has been leaked previously.

2. This file is important because

a. it shows the 13 million member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in September 2008 strongly restricting its members’ access to their own member records.

b. it is an actual screen shot of the “membership record” printing terms that are displayed when a church leader goes to print a membership record

c. it is a new technology implementation in September 2008

3. The likely audience for this leak, since it is bite sized and accessible rather than voluminous and esoteric, is LDS watch groups, mainstream press in areas with significant LDS population, and even the general public.

4. This submittal can be verified by telephoning LDS Church headquarters spokespeople regarding “a new precaution added in MLS version 2.9 to prevent members inadvertently receiving their membership records.”

5. This document was leaked because the whistleblower thought the implementation was scandalous and that it newly required leaders to either comply with the policy, perjure themselves, or employ creative reasoning.
6. There is an event that makes the document timely. The technology update was made in the past 8 days. There is no impending event that makes the publication urgent.

And the Constitution will be rescued when ?????

And when does the Constitution cover freedom of information, and when does it cover Church's must provide membership records...or employers must provide employee records?

Oh that's right, not covered in the Constitution.

That’s news to me. I get a copy of the membership records for everyone in my family each year to verify their accuracy.

Don,
Have you asked after September, 2008? It sounds as if this is something new.

Don,
As a non-member of the LDS group, I’m no expert, but it sounds as if the handbook quote is referring to the IOS (2006) and not the printout of the Membership Record from the software, which I assume has additional info.

Guess you could call tomorrow and ask for a printout of your membership record (not IOS) and see what they say...

The software was implemented in Sept 2008 and you can read what the alert box says.

That’s all I know. I look forward to hearing how that goes.

best,
ampu

I’ll let you in on a deep, dark secret, something you can use to post your own super-sensitive contribution to the vast pool of leaked information.

The manual for their top secret MLS program can be found here:

http://www.lds.org/bfs/MLS_Help_Manual.pdf

(p.s. Things you probably don’t want others to know about you are omitted from your IOS. They won’t be things you don’t already know about yourself.)

I was just released from being a Ward Clerk. I used the MLS program.

The print out for IOS is the same as for the Membership. It has been a long policy that members could get the information regarding their membership as an IOS print.

The print that says Membership is just for use of the bishop and clerks. It is essentially the same as when the membership records were kept in a book.

The member could get the information off the record, but not the record its self.

It is just a computerized procedure that is the same as it has always been. Nothing secret about it.

The notice that appears on the screen is just a reminder, not a change.

As an LDS membership clerk for a ward (about 500 people) I’m constantly having members correct their records. Anyone can see their records (not someone else’s) at any time. All members are supposed to be given the “Individual Ordinance Summary” whenever changes are made to their records. Pretty much all of the information on a member’s “official” record is contained on that document (at least they look the same to me but with a different heading). It’s just personal information such as when a person was baptized or married. We have had problems with some members (like the type that takes screen shots of databases of other people’s info) taking a copy of membership records and using it to mail out things like Christmas cards or wedding invitations.

I’m starting to question the general sanity of Freepers as well as the accuracy of most everything on the site given that every time I’ve seen something I have personal knowledge of it’s totally off-base.

Sundog,
Thanks for posting the link to the manual for the software update. I would urge people to take time to the depth of information gathered about individual LDS members - including information they do not want members to see. It is also very instructive to observe the depth of legalism this cult has and the lengths they go to make sure members comply with those legalistic requirements.

Now, for a secret for you...

Nowhere in the manual does it show the alert that members are not to get copies of their membership records.

Again, thank you for adding to the depth of the picture that is emerging.

One more thing worth noting. It was someone inside the LDS hive that leaked the screen shot of the alert window.

best,
ampu

The post just quotes the LDS software itself. No more.

Thanks for the good laugh tonight. I love all of the, “ohhh, spooky Mormon cult stuff...” You might make non-members afraid, but you just make those of us who are LDS think, “Don’t they have better things to do with their time, really? While you are all wasting your time learning about our deep dark secrets (LOL) we have done our home & visiting teaching, attended the temple (s-p-o-o-k-y!), played games with our kids, sang carols to our neighbors, and read scripture and said prayers as a family. Yes, you should all be VERY AFRAID!

I was online doing family history work. :)

And laughing at the silliness of this thread when I glance at the forum from time to time.

LOL!

RB,
There are three distinct groups on FR that have an interest in things mormon:

1. Current Members
2. Former Members
3. Christians

Each is interested for differing and probably overlapping reasons. I don’t pretend to know what each thinks. They can speak for themselves. Do they have “better things to do with their time?” Apparently you don’t, since you are reading the thread and posting. I assume you are in group 1. Maybe those in the other groups can speak for their own time usage...

I don’t know any of the three groups who view mormonism as “spooky” as you described those supposed readers.

best,
