And where do you propose these Nephite ruins to be. To what ruins are you referring?

An ad hominem argument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin: “argument to the man”, “argument against the man”) consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim. The process of proving or disproving the claim is thereby subverted, and the argumentum ad hominem works to change the subject.

It is most commonly used to refer specifically to the ad hominem as abusive, sexist, racist, or argumentum ad personam, which consists of criticizing or attacking the person who proposed the argument (personal attack) in an attempt to discredit the argument. It is also used when an opponent is unable to find fault with an argument, yet for various reasons, the opponent disagrees with it.

If you would like to forward any evidence to your claims I will take them apart (as I have done in the past) one by one. You pick which charge you would like to start with.

Mr. Bushman is certainly entitled to his opinion. I can condense his sentiments differently.

People are too often "cultured" into the Church by members who truly do not understand their own religion and religious tradition. Evangelical ministers don't want to loose their congregation because it is their livelihood. No one is paid for their service in the Lord's Church, so the desire to keep someone in the fold is based on a different premise. If someone does not receive a testimony of the truthfulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ or of the Prophet of the Restoration or of any other aspect of Truth, they are welcomed to stay and be nourished as they search or be granted the hand of brotherhood and wished well as they choose to worship God according to the dictates of their own conscience. We do not spend millions of dollars every year, as the Evangelical churches do, bashing other religions. In fact, not a dime on a pamphlet, book, research paper, or other detraction, as the Evangelical churches do. We have found that when presented with the Truth, the humble seekers of Jesus Christ can make those determinations on their own.

"a respected LDS source"

He is an academic. There are people not of our faith who teach at BYU who hold chairs in certain studies. This does not give their opinions any more weight than any member of the Church or nonmember. I hardly see any reason for your apparent glee. Its like fairytale witches dancing around a fire, bubbling and giggling at every spark that ascends.

I would agree that anyone without a testimony of the things in which they profess to believe is on a errant path. They should determine for themselves with the help and aid of heaven as to what is true and what is not true. I do not advocate anyone staying in the Church by plugging their ears or covering their eyes. There are covenants made that are eternal in nature. Should they walk away from that truth after having received it, as Paul says in Hebrews:

For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins

Again, accusations without proof. The truth is that many of Bushman's articles, particularly as he addressed the Smithsonian last year, have been published on the Church's own website and have been encouraged reading from the pulpit at General Conference (a two-day world wide address). Whether you can imagine it happening or not is irrelevant. That it does or does not happen is the reality you should determine before making such ridiculous assertions.

No one is paid for their service in the Lord's Church

Mmmmm...just WHAT is "the Lord's Church"? I've noticed that phrase used quite often lately. No one has been able to prove that claim.

We do not spend millions of dollars every year, as the Evangelical churches do, bashing other religions. In fact, not a dime on a pamphlet, book, research paper, or other detraction, as the Evangelical churches do.

Care to substantiate the above claim with links to sources?

How much do LDS missionaries and their families pay out every single year for LDS missionaries to go out and claim that every faith EXCEPT the mormon faith is in false?

I agree with your statement regarding the LDS..., "People are too often "cultured" into the Church by members who truly do not understand their own religion and religious tradition."

I am in a newly formed ward composed of many people of color from Detroit.

I really love listening to them and their testamony of how they received the witness.

The many I heard so far haved received a witness from the Holy Spirit as they swere reading the Book of Mormon.

I am learning so many new things, it is such joy to watch how the Lord works to bring His flock unto Him.

One can witness many things written in Jacob about working in the vineyard and strengthening the branches etc.

Satan was cast out of heaven for rebellion. Your point?

Moreover, there have always been standards of worthiness and laws of purification in proscribed temple work since Moses outlined them. Your point?

Joseph Smith did live up to those standards. If you would like to produce a substantiated claim (ie. not your own wild imaginings) then let us take them one at a time. If you are only interested in making attacks, then others here will see the shallowness for your arguments and the vapidity of thought behind them.

Ah, I see from your other posts you are one of the faithful, so maybe you can tell me where to look, maybe you can propose were they are. A society that stretches from sea to sea should have left many lovely artifacts, will you be the first to lead us to them? Will you be the first to succeed where other Mormon faithful such as Thomas Ferguson failed?

You are welcome and those who have a sincere desire will receive answers.

I can only assume that since I received NO answer from you; you must have read my MIND and determined that I was not 'sincere'.

I found brother Bushman to be a soft spoken and fair man.

Even if the antagonist is a spoiled brat, Bro Bushman feels it is wise to leave man with his dignity instead of calling a spade, a spade.

That is more like the Lord’s approach leaving the door ajar hoping one will find their way back before the Great and Dreadful day arrives!

Which point should be addressed? He is giving his opinion as to why and how some people feel disaffected from the Church. Obviously, you are reading something into this that the rest of us are not.

Everyone keeps saying "my friend", "I have this friend".

You all sound like Richard Gephardt, Al Gore, and Senator Byrd. If you are going to tell stories, work on making them sound more believable first. I do like the "blood atonement rituals" line. That was pretty good. LOL.
