When Gov. Alfred E. Smith ran for president in 1928, his candidacy was derailed in large part by anti-Catholic prejudice. It has been nearly 48 years since John F. Kennedy became the first (and so far only) Roman Catholic president, but experts say that anti-Catholic sentiment much of it originating in, or as a response to, immigrants in New York remains an enduring force in American culture.
That was the consensus of a panel assembled at the Museum of the City of New York on Tuesday night to consider the question, Is Anti-Catholicism Dead?
...The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus a leading conservative intellectual, a former Lutheran pastor and the editor of the leading Catholic journal First Things offered a surprising view on the question.
To be a Catholic is not to be refused positions of influence in our society, he said. Indeed, one of the most acceptable things is to be a bad Catholic, and in the view of many people, the only good Catholic is a bad Catholic.
...He added that anti-Catholicism was as likely to come from the left sometimes from commentators who believe that a threatening theological insurgency is engineered and directed by Catholics, with evangelical Protestants merely as the movements foot soldiers.

I second the motion. Great post, Alex!
You have my vote, Alex. It’s a heavy mantle to carry, but no one wears it with as much righteous daring as you. 8~)
Start a database on them, too.
Seriously, I don't see anyone disagreeing with my posts on the impossibility of salvation outside of the Catholic Church. I see helpful comments that elaborate, but no disagreement. Which post, do you think, is in disagreement?
ANNALEX: I know, for example, that as an anti-Catholic you cannot go to heaven."
VLAD: I still dont see any automatic consignment to hell there.
LOLOL. You have just given a good example of Rome's habitual and tedious parsing of the language and of the blindness that goes hand-in-hand with believing a lie.
What’s “GRPL”?
I agree with everything Vladimir, blessed by virtue of being Catholic with the gift of reading comprehension, posted in 222 regarding my posts in Alex’s database.

What you have given here is the usual Genevan kind of false claim when a Protestant fails to make the point he said he was going to make.
There’s no automatic consignment to hell there for someone just being a protestant - therefore Alex Murphy failed. Don’t like it? Too bad.
Complain all you like, but why don’t you just summon the courage to refute what I said? What, can’t do it?
Thanks Annalex. It seems pretty clear to me that you do not believe Protestants are going to hell merely because they are Protestants. If a Protestant goes to hell it is for different reasons.
Evidently the "salvation maybe" thread became too toxic even for the harpies so they came over here to see what else they can spoil.
BTW, the answer to the original question of this thread is that it's not dead, but it's very sick.
When the harpies show up it's time to leave. The meal is ruined as soon as they appear.
You have that right. The anti-Catholics are not shy when it comes to their bigotry. Apparently it is the only thing they talk about in their “churches” - can’t keep their minds on Jesus.
Nothing much more required to illustrate the truth of Alex Murphy's point.
Pray for eyes to see the difference between black and white.
“There is NO anti-Catholicism on Free Republic. None. Zero. Nada. Period-dot-end of story.
Anybody who says otherwise is just a tool of the Whore of Babylon.”
Funniest thing I’ve read in weeks. I’m taking a break from those threads for awhile. You feel obligated to defend your faith, but occasionally, you grow smaller against the “whore of Babylon crowd”.

Hey, wait a minute, I haven’t finished eating my boiled crow.
Thnx
Of course. Neither is, for example, a Muslim going to hell merely because he is a Muslim. A conscious informed rejection of the truths of the Catholic faith is what condemns to hell; the embrace of these truths, albeit with the last breath, is what saves a soul. Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus.
You think I refute people without being aware of doing so? Am I that good?
Looks like crow's back on the menu. boys!
Did you notice the anti-Catholic is putting some of you on the defensive? That is a popular tactic. We are bad, bad, bad and must be shown how correct/holy they are because they are above us in all ways. Pls don’t fall for the bait. We know our Religion and history. They make it up - even Jimmie wrote their “Bible” - must not have had anything to do.
The mind is totally depraved. What this means functionally is that reality is what a Protestant (or some of 'em) says it is, and any use of reason to show the contrary is a doomed instance of depravity, nothing more.
