What is the burning in the bosom that Mormons refer to? ##OPEN##
Concerned Christians ^

Mormonism teaches that if a person prays about the Book of Mormon "with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it (the Book of Mormon) unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost." (Book of Mormon, Moroni 10:4, insert added) If this is done, "your bosom shall burn within you" to show that it is true (Doctrine and Covenants, 9:8)

When a Mormon says that, he will generally pat his chest and say he received a burning of the bosom to know that it is true. It would be agreed that the bosom contains the heart. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" In other words, we are not to rely on feelings because they are notoriously unreliable. Feelings change about as often as the direction of the winds.

The Bereans knew nothing of a "burning bosom" to determine if God's word is true. In fact, they "searched the scriptures daily, whether those things [Paul taught] were so." (Acts 17:11, insert added) Paul commended them for doing this, saying that they were "more noble than those in Thessalonica" for testing his teachings. We are to "Prove all things, hold fast that which is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21) If Paul commended those who tested him, how much more should we test others who claim to be prophets?

The emotional cart is getting in front of the doctrinal horse with this burning bosom teaching.

I vote for having fewer threads on Mormonism.

I vote for having less TRUTH being exposed on FR.

For those who haven't read Luke 24 yet:

And for those who haven't read the MORMON take on it:

THE BOOK OF MORONI
CHAPTER 10

A testimony of the Book of Mormon comes by the power of the Holy Ghost—The gifts of the Spirit are dispensed to the faithful—Spiritual gifts always accompany faith—Moroni’s words speak from the dust—Come unto Christ, be perfected in him, and sanctify your souls. About A.D. 421

1 Now I, Moroni, write somewhat as seemeth me good; and I write unto my brethren, the Lamanites; and I would that they should know that *more than four hundred and twenty years have passed away since the sign was given of the coming of Christ.
2 And I seal up these records, after I have spoken a few words by way of exhortation unto you.
3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.
4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

THE
DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS
SECTION 9

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to Oliver Cowdery, at Harmony, Pennsylvania, April 1829. HC 1: 37–38. Oliver is admonished to be patient, and is urged to be content to write, for the time being, at the dictation of the translator, rather than to attempt to translate. 1–6, Other ancient records are yet to be translated; 7–14, The Book of Mormon is translated by study and by spiritual confirmation.

1 Behold, I say unto you, my son, that because you did not translate according to that which you desired of me, and did commence again to write for my servant, Joseph Smith, Jun., even so I would that ye should continue until you have finished this record, which I have entrusted unto him.
2 And then, behold, other records have I, that I will give unto you power that you may assist to translate.
3 Be patient, my son, for it is wisdom in me, and it is not expedient that you should translate at this present time.
4 Behold, the work which you are called to do is to write for my servant Joseph.
5 And, behold, it is because that you did not continue as you commenced, when you began to translate, that I have taken away this privilege from you.
6 Do not murmur, my son, for it is wisdom in me that I have dealt with you after this manner.
7 Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.
8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must cask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.
9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.
10 Now, if you had known this you could have translated; nevertheless, it is not expedient that you should translate now.
11 Behold, it was expedient when you commenced; but you feared, and the time is past, and it is not expedient now;
12 For, do you not behold that I have given unto my servant Joseph sufficient strength, whereby it is made up? And neither of you have I condemned.
13 Do this thing which I have commanded you, and you shall prosper. Be faithful, and yield to no temptation.
14 Stand fast in the work wherewith I have called you, and a hair of your head shall not be lost, and you shall be lifted up at the last day. Amen.

, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"

I would guess that if you are WALKING with Jesus and TALKING with Jesus and HE explains SCRIPTURE to you; you WOULD tend to get all heated up!

There are just a few of the 150 on the heart and the main core is what is a person intend if it is not of the Lord they will not receive a witness!

I have recieved a 'witness': the witness of the WORD.

It tells me all I need to know about the origins of MORMONISM.

Galatians 1:7-10
 7.  Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
 8.  But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
 9.  As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15
 14.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
 15.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

 Revelation 13:13-15
 13.  And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
 14.  And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother, “I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

It appears that EXPERIENCES can be deceiving...

If one believes the Bible is correct, then, by that Standard, Mormonism fails the test.

If, however, you are convinced that the Bible is either in error, been corrupted or mis-interpreted, then you are free to believe whatever you wish.

well, it makes sense — if you read the Book of Moroni and get a burning, then the Book is true. If you read the book of Moroni and don’t get a burning, then you aren’t one of the chosen and the Book IS true. If you don’t read the book of Moroni, then the Book is true by default.

Mohammed created the doctrines for Islam from a mixture of existing false gods and christianity. He was on a trading mission to Byzanthium for his first wife and learned of christanity at that time. With several centuries having passed, much of the Byzanthian christian doctrine was amiss. Hence our use of Byzantine as an adjective

Not completely correct. The Byzantine Christian doctrines was sound and orthodox -- it was the origins of the Orthodox Church. The reason we use the term byzantine to mean murky is due to the politics of the Byzantine Empire.

There were many Christians in Arabia -- what is now Yemen was at that time part of the Ethiopian Christian Empire, while Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan and much of Iraq was Christian under the Byzantine Empire

Even in Mecca and Madinah there were Christians there, but since it was outside the Christian empire, there were many Arians and Gnostics there -- now the Arians consider Christ to be a lesser God, created by God, and second in line. There were also many Jews in Mecca -- if you read the Koran, they are referred to many times -- one of Mo's wife was a Jewess.

The religion he created was a mish-mash of Arianism, Judaisim, pre-slamic Arabian beliefs and Zoroastrianism (don't know about Zoroastrianism? Well, it was the religion of the Magi and the religion of Cyrus the GReat, the Persian Emperor who freed the Judeans from Babylon)

By golly you've nailed it! I'm gonna save that response for future use, with your permission.
