The Worship of Mary? (An Observation)

Posted on 05/30/2008 10:21:34 AM PDT by Ultra Sonic 007

Some of you will remember my recent decision to become a Catholic. I suppose I should be surprised it ended getting derailed into a 'Catholic vs. Protestant' thread, but after going further into the Religion forum, I suppose it's par for the course.

There seems to be a bit of big issue concerning Mary. I wanted to share an observation of sorts.

Now...although I was formerly going by 'Sola Scriptura', my father was born and raised Catholic, so I do have some knowledge of Catholic doctrine (not enough, at any rate...so consider all observations thusly).

Mary as a 'co-redeemer', Mary as someone to intercede for us with regards to our Lord Jesus.

Now...I can definitely see how this would raise some hairs. After all, Jesus Himself said that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and that none come to the Father but through Him. I completely agree.

I do notice a bit of a fundamental difference in perception though. Call it a conflict of POV. Do Catholics worship Mary (as I've seen a number of Protestants proclaim), or do they rather respect and venerate her (as I've seen Catholics claim)? Note that it's one thing to regard someone with reverence; I revere President Bush as the noted leader of the free world. I revere my father. I revere Dr. O'Neil, a humorous and brilliant math teacher at my university. It's an act of respect.

But do I WORSHIP them?

No. Big difference between respecting/revering and worshiping. At least, that's how I view it.

I suppose it's also a foible to ask Mary to pray for us, on our behalf...but don't we tend to also ask other people to pray for us? Doesn't President Bush ask for people to pray for him? Don't we ask our family members to pray for us for protection while on a trip? I don't see quite a big disconnect between that and asking Mary to help pray for our wellbeing.

There is some question to the fact that she is physically dead. Though it stands to consider that she is still alive, in Heaven. Is it not common practice to not just regard our physical life, but to regard most of all our spirit, our soul? That which survives the flesh before ascending to Heaven or descending to Hell after God's judgment?

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I could change my mind after reading more in-depth, but I don't think that the Catholic Church has decreed via papal infallibility that Mary is to be placed on a higher pedestal than Jesus, or even to be His equal.

Do I think she is someone to be revered and respected? Certainly. She is the mother of Jesus, who knew Him for His entire life as a human on Earth. Given that He respected her (for He came to fulfill the old laws; including 'Honor Thy Father and Mother'), I don't think it's unnatural for other humans to do the same. I think it's somewhat presumptuous to regard it on the same level as idolatry or supplanting Jesus with another.

In a way, I guess the way Catholics treat Mary and the saints is similar to how the masses treated the Apostles following the Resurrection and Jesus's Ascension: people who are considered holy in that they have a deep connection with Jesus and His Word, His Teachings, His Message. As the Apostles spread the Good News and are remembered and revered to this day for their work, so to are the works of those sainted remembered and revered. Likewise with Mary. Are the Apostles worshiped? No. That's how it holds with Mary and the saints.

At least, that's how my initial thoughts on the subject are. I'll have to do more reading.

There is a Protestant practice of "turning up a verse" - i.e., when in doubt about any problem in life, go to a Bible, open it at random, with eyes closed, point to whatever verse your finger lands on, and take that as your answer.

What a nice way to say "divination."

Can you give me your criteria for this statement?
In some circles, pegging our troops as baby killers is acceptable.

It’s far from official.

I would call it an “Idea of Reference”. Like flipping a coin to make a decision.

I knew people who would decide on things by a horoscope or whether the sun was out. Even flipping a coin onto a couch. If it landed on one cushion, do this. On the other cushion, do that.

I’m not sure that pointing at The Word of God is much different than pointing at Aquarius in the NYT.

If you don't get a Bible verse right up front, you can bet whatever you get will sound like a Disney song just prior to some really big magic.

I have a question, and hopefully someone can answer it for me.

Often I see Protestants posting titles of books written by Protestants aimed at Catholics, like Dr. Eckleburg posted here yesterday:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2023605/posts?page=1908#1908

And I have read portions of some of these books, which are available in any Christian bookstore, and from what I can tell, the thesis is always more or less the same. The theory is that Catholics believe (fill in the blank) and because they believe this they are quite possibly going to burn in hell. Catholic readers of the book or the Protestants who witness to them are told how grave this situation is and that the only possibility to assure Salvation is to leave the Church. Protestants are reminded that nothing is more important than this. What never seems to be addressed is the unsaid implication that the late, beloved parents, grandparents, spouses, siblings and children of these Catholics are burning in hell, but that it is too late for them.

This seems to be the general mode of apologetics in these bound, elongated tracts. It is not defense of Protestant doctrine, it is actually an attack on Catholic doctrine with a Protestant interpretation (often coupled with liberal doses of misrepresentation) of why the Church is wrong.

So, my question is this, can ANYBODY give me the name of a current or recent Catholic book that indicates that mainline Protestants are possibly damned for their beliefs? Can you tell me where to buy a SINGLE book that tells Protestants that they must become Catholic to be saved from the fires of hell?

Fascinating!

1 Now after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of the Persians, Esdras the son of Saraias, the son of Azarias, the son of Helcias, 2 The son of Sellum, the son of Sadoc, the son of Achitob, 3 The son of Amarias, the son of Azarias, the son of Maraioth, 4 The son of Zarahias, the son of Ozi, the son of Bocci, 5 The son of Abisue, the son of Phinees, the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest from the beginning. (1 Esdras 7:1-5)

Now, will someone please explain to me how this is the solution to ANYTHING.

I never claimed to be an authority on the Scriptures. But I know that protties can read it for themselves, and interpret for themselves, so I’m just wondering where you got that fallen angels are running around trying to “get” humans.

I admit I'm not familiar with your entire conversation and I'm not even a "Prottie" but Jesus told us so.

2 Corinthians 11:
[14] And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

Don't get mad my friend, but I know how you feel. It is really a reflection of how lost they are. It can happen to any of us. We really need to pray for God's children. We have been given so many blessings. The least we can do in return is be patient and loving, even to those who insult those who are precious to us. They don't know what they do.

FEBRUARY 15, 1996 OUR LORD'S MESSAGE given through Father Jack Spaulding

"My dear ones, I come to you this night to ask each of you the same question that I asked My disciples. 'Who do you say that I am?' But before you answer, I come to say another thing to you. It is this - you discriminate against Me when you choose sin. You ask Me to wait as you choose to do your will instead of the will of My Father and yours. My dear ones, this discrimination will eventually kill you. I ask you this night to stop discriminating against Me, your Lord; to stop choosing other gods rather than choosing the one true and only God; not to sell your birthright of eternal life for transitory happiness. My dear ones, what you judge as a long life is but an instant before God My Father and yours. Is discriminating against Me worth an eternity of pain. Of being away from the God Who created you and Who loves you? Again I ask you to stop this discrimination; to choose again the love that I offer you. In that choice you will answer with all of your heart that I am your Lord and Savior, the Messiah of your soul.

I bless you with peace this night, and I touch each of your hearts with My Mercy which is not only Mine but My Father's and Our Spirit. I Love You! Allow Me to love you!"

PS. for the rest of you, "Other God's" refer to sins like worshiping money, sex, food, drugs, drink, football, gambling. etc. and putting those things before God's will.

I tried it:

Tob 11:9 Then the dog, which had been with them in the way, ran before, and coming as if he had brought the news, shewed his joy by his fawning and wagging his tail.

Now what in the world am I . . . oh wait, I have to feed Scoobie! Almost forgot.

Just a little aside before I have to rush to the shower and go to Adoration.

I knew a little girl with Leukemia, she came out of remission and they wanted her to return to the hospital immediately. She comforted her family and told them not to worry but she was very disappointed that she was going to miss 1st Communion class that year because she had wanted the Eucharist for the longest time.

That was on a Thursday evening, I called the priest asked if she could do her 1st Communion on Sunday, he said yes, and the church was standing room only on that day.

I tell you this because she wasn’t even from an exceptionally devout family but her soul knew what was important.

On the day she died, she was laying in her mother’s arms, struggling to breath, almost comatose and she sat up all of a sudden and said that they needed to pray. They couldn’t just say a prayer, they had to kneel. She said the guardian angel prayer and her mother swears that Jack was seeing her angel.

She had been ready to die for a while but she didn’t want to die until her mother could handle it. She so radiated love and in the course of her treatment, even when she felt rotten enough that death seemed a good thought, she would try to make other people feel better.

Good question. I for one would never pretend to play God and tell anyone they were condemned to hell, or worship the devil. Only my God can determine those things.

Luke 20, 34-38. What’s the matter?

Well, it's hard to read for this poor old fool and I probably will pass it by with the mental reservation "a perfect understanding of these few verses is not really necessary for my salvation."

I'm not mean enough to cut & paste a lengthy commentary but I invite you to read what Matthew Henry has to say.

Matthew Henry - Luke 20:34-38

Doesn't count, you can only use verses that have not been censored out. Perhaps this passage:

1 After she was returned to her mother in law, Noemi said to her: My daughter, I will seek rest for thee, and will provide that it may be well with thee. 2 This Booz, with whose maids thou wast joined in the field, is our near kinsman, and behold this night he winnoweth barley in the threshingfloor. 3 Wash thyself therefore and anoint thee, and put on thy best garments, and go down to the barnfloor: but let not the man see thee, till he shall have done eating and drinking. 4 And when he shall go to sleep, mark the place wherein he sleepeth: and thou shalt go in, and lift up the clothes wherewith he is covered towards his feet, and shalt lay thyself down there: and he will tell thee what thou must do. 5 She answered: Whatsoever thou shalt command, I will do. (Ruth 3:1-5)
