There is a Protestant practice of "turning up a verse" - i.e., when in doubt about any problem in life, go to a Bible, open it at random, with eyes closed, point to whatever verse your finger lands on, and take that as your answer.

What a nice way to say "divination."

I would call it an “Idea of Reference”. Like flipping a coin to make a decision.

I knew people who would decide on things by a horoscope or whether the sun was out. Even flipping a coin onto a couch. If it landed on one cushion, do this. On the other cushion, do that.

I’m not sure that pointing at The Word of God is much different than pointing at Aquarius in the NYT.
