Why so many LDS threads?
08-May-2008 | Grig

Posted on 05/08/2008 5:04:47 PM PDT by Grig

I am posting this on behalf of many LDS freepers. They will post their own 'signature' to this in the comments below. --- Some of you have noticed lately a lot of LDS (ie: Mormon) threads here on FR. I'm going to tell you why.

For many years there have been several active LDS freepers here. We post to all the forums on relevant issues, and were happy to have a site where conservative values were so openly welcomed.

Those conservative values include faith in God, and freedom of religion. We fully respect the rights of all posters to express their opinions and views on religious matters, even when people choose to use those rights to express criticism of our own faith. We also support the ideas embodied in FR rules against religion bashing. There is no need for hostility and there should be no room for bigotry on FR. Every religion has it's miracles and mysteries. Every faith has things in it that are not or can not be proven, and things that run contrary to what secular science would have us believe. Someone mature and confident in their own faith generally doesn't feel the need to belittle the faith of others.

We have, to the best of our ability, conducted ourselves with civility and dignity. We do not feel that that respect has been returned by some posters (putting it mildly).

When Mormon missionaries were murdered, the moderators were kept busy pulling jubilant posts off the thread. When Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her home, we contended for months with posters who appeared to be motivated by religious bigotry doing all they could to smear the family and accuse the father. Several posters openly admitted their religious motivation in opposing Mitt Romney and confessed that no matter how conservative any Mormon was, they would never vote for one for President of the USA. When the Pope died, I don't think any Mormon poster posted anything unkind, yet the thread about the passing of our President recently needed many comments removed.

Nearly every thread having any connection with Mormons, or Utah winds up being hijacked by anti-Mormon activists who copy and paste the same false accusations over and over even when it has been clearly and factually pointed out to them on multiple occasions that they are bearing false witness against our faith. Everything possible is done by these activists to make FR a hostile place for Mormons, and for at least some of them, bashing Mormonism is all they do here. Their most recent project is trying to blur the fact that the polygamous FLDS is a separate and distinct religion from ours, just as Lutherans are a separate and distinct religion from Catholicism.

In our opinion, such poster do a great disservice to FR and to their fellow freepers by spreading disinformation and promoting hostility towards a people known for walking the walk of conservative values.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us, but it is the moderators call to make and we respect their right to do so. That doesn't mean we have to be passive however. We have all spent many hours refuting the accusations leveled at our faith, but these wind up buried deep in a flood of comments, effectively shouting us down.

Recently some of us have decided to take a more proactive approach. Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down. We will actively define our faith here rather than just respond to accusations.

So expect to see lots of Mormon threads, now and for as long as we see fit to keep posting them (although probably not as many as there are Catholic threads). They will be about our basic doctrines and responses to common accusations. If you want to know what our faith is about, read the articles we post. We will post them as open threads and I encourage you to compare the difference in tone and spirit between what we post and what our critics say.

my opinion remains unchanged

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/888189/posts?page=277#277

"Thats when people post pro-apologetic information regarding thier own faith, posters respond with diverging views and opinions, and you shout them down and cry to the mods" (rev911 2003)

"As far as I understand, in the context of the conservative movement (and religion plays a huge part of that) I can post my opinions, I can post historical information, or doctrinal flaws, or theological vacancies in any faith as long as it is not not in a bashing manner" (rev911 2003)

"JR has told us not to bash - he didnt say stop discussing it" (rev911 2003)

Certainly the abundance of threads is due to Mitts candidacy, the flds issue, and doctrinal disagreements....stop playing the vic.

Why the moderators here don't see the behavior of these anti-Mormon activists as religion bashing is a mystery to us

whos in charge here?....you apparently missed the lds wars of 03 when a great many calvinists were purged ....it ultimately spawned the religion forum

Rather than try to wrestle the pig into taking a bath, we are just going to hose it down

what lovely spiritual fruits (sarc)

[I am very concerned that so many children can be stripped from their parents over one allegation of abuse.]

That’s my feeling to. Yea, Verily, And it Came To Pass that that mishmash of poor prose posted and titled Mosiah was certain to numb the minds of many.

Yikes! Sorry, that was a copy and paste error.

[The massive LDS spam campaign will eventually end when they realize that they do themselves more harm than good as their doctrine is exposed.]

Lurkers, Godzilla is a paid Theologian, he is paid to represent his church, I am an amateur, I get nothing for my service here. I come here only for one reason for the testimony of Jesus, and the Glory of God. The lord knows I have had no end of hassling for being a Mormon who will not knuckle under even when I have tons of posters coming at me with all manner of tactics. I testify to you that I know the Book of Mormon is true, I know Jesus lives I received this knowledge direct from God,

I wonder how many actual “paid theologians” there are at FR, and why DU seems to be so frightened of what he claims is one? BUT....of course he says receives his information “direct from God”.

I think you got a wrong number a couple of times, DU...better check the connections.]

What is truly amusing, to those who know their history, is that Joseph Smith had his revelation that tithing was necessary so he could secure an income for himself and Sidney Rigdon after they’d both been denied a salary. (see Ebeneezer Robinson’s account). He needed money after the Kirtland Bank scam.

So all this self righteousness about paid and unpaid theologians is the usual hypocritical puffery.

Just asking. Thought I was making the Religion Moderator aware by pinging him/her. Would you suggest I hit abuse button?

*************************

In your previous post:

" How come it is that FR is so quick to protect the pope from this kind of ridiculue but then its ok to be done against the founder of another's religion? Lookin' for some consistency here."

One might conclude that the Mods are paying more attention to criticism of Catholicism while letting others go by. If the Mods had already been made aware of a post, either by a ping or hitting the abuse button, this might well be a valid complaint. I didn't see any sign that the Mods had been alerted to the post in question, so asking why they are "quick to protect the Pope" seems unfair to them.

Ah ok I get your point now. Don't think it stands up though. The impropriety has been glaringly obvious on these threads for a few years now. I can only conclude the mods share the bias. Its obvious the mods didn't figure they owed an explanation. But that's fine, they don't owe me anything.

I testify to you that I know the Book of Mormon is true, I know Jesus lives I received this knowledge direct from God, both testimonies at the Same time, just as First John 4:1-3 promised they would if the message was of God. If you want to know as I know, then ignore all this banter here, and Put the Book of Mormon to "The Test"

I am also a lay-person....and I also come here for one reason. To testify to you and others about my God...who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Jesus died on the cross...for us all. And their is only ONE WAY to God, and that is thru His Son, Jesus. Not some man. Not some angel. Nor some prophet. But thru Jesus...and only thru Jesus can you be set free.

My Lord knows...I have been hassled for speaking TRUTH here. But I will not give up, the GOOD FIGHT. And I will testify to you right now...the book of mormon is a deception direct from Satan, who is the god of this world...and a liar and a thief. And I've rec'd this directly from God's WORD.

DU, once again I tell you I HAVE put the book of mormon to the test. And it fails.

DU - you really can't believe this. Maybe you can, but if you do - I think you may not be in touch with reality.

But, your paranoid thoughts on Godzilla are actually a compliment. He/She is obviously very knowledgeable - and a terribly good debater.

There are quite a lot of good debate skills here on FR.

Some are horrible at it - like sevenbak. All he does is spam threads with page after page of nothing, again and again.

Godzilla is good - he is clear, and on target in every point.

I can see why you fear him.

Yeah, I’ll leave you to debate in the sandbox all you want. Rather than listening to you (or me) spout off the same arguments over and over, the hose brigade continues.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/2014393/posts

If you want to debate point for point and spend the rest of you life at it, be my guest. I’ll continue to post the words written by prophets of God, anciently and currently from all corners of the word, wherever they were called.

Cheers

Nice stats, care to verify before posting assumptions?

Ever been to President Monson’s home, the one he's lived in fro 40 years, before becoming President of the LDS Church? The one where he lived for decades while such a high member of the 12 and First Presidency?

I have. It's a rambler, small, brick, normal yard, older, normal neighborhood.

Ever seen Elder Perry pumping his own gas at a Maverick, into a small sedan?

I have, it reminded me of King Benjamin. Surely you remember his message before you left the Church.

http://scriptures.lds.org/mosiah/2/

Do you have anything to back up your assertions?

Thanks, coming from you, that means something. But, he does have a point, at least. To give sky some credit, I’ve slacked off quite a bit in that arena. It’s becoming tiresome doing the same thing with the same people.

Posting what we actually believe instead of following behind the horses, cleaning up after the parade has passed by seems more beneficial.

“the hose brigade continues.”

I guess you feel that is some witty insult, hosing off the sh*t from the pigs. But the funny thing is, the antis welcome your posting of bizarre snippets from fictional works like Mosiah. You see, Mormon doctrinal work is such obtuse literature and filled with enough Yeas, Yea Verily’s, And Then It Came To Pass’s to bore a sane person to tears, that you are proving our point that it was dictated by some poor peepstone gazing charlatan.

You need to go back to the tactic endorsed by the LDS Church in its propaganda ads, just throw out some feel good statements about families and lonely souls and tie it all up in a minute. Cause once you start posting the real material and people have to trudge through its vast empty spaces, they can see right through it.

I’m trying to be helpful, really I am. After all, a pig like me will only feel so much better after being hosed off with a cold shower of mindless gibberish.

Maybe you could post some original letters of Smith to his lovers, that would add some pizazz to the “hose brigade”.

Yea, Verily, And it Came To Pass that that mishmash of poor prose posted and titled Mosiah was certain to numb the minds of many.

Verily, Yea, Verily, and Verily it Came To Pass, Yea, Verily, the writing which he had wrote upon the rent. To the reader I bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read my words. Brethren, adieu.

The Book of Mormon makes reference to writings of O.T. times and connection that are not found in the Bible, the Book of Mormon, or in any other known source.

The BIBLE makes an EXACT reference to MORMONISM when warning of Angels of Light.

Why do mere humans think that DEMONS somehow CANNOT refer to something that 'existed', but was NOT deemed worty of being included in the BIBLe is beyond my understanding.

Sorry DU; it 'proves' nothing.

Just like your ANOTHER testement of Jesus Christ 'proves' nothing new.
