Dear Freepers,
I've never asked for prayers on FR, but I have to now. Would you please pray for my youngest daughter, who's 19?
I am in tears because she was just diagnosed with a large nodule on her thyroid. I had mine removed to papillary cancer in '06, and I'm praying and hoping that she doesn't have to have hers removed as well. It tends to run in my family, my grandmother had hers removed too.
She is a strong young woman, in college, and is a blessing to our family. She is scared for a variety of reasons as I'm sure you can understand. She remembers the misdiagnosis's I've had, the undertreatment, and overtreatment, prior to the correct diagnosis. She doesn't want to go through all of that. She's still at the doctors office...(she originally went for a sinus infection)..he sent her to get scheduled for a thyroid scan.
I know the risks of the surgery...one of which could be paralyzing a vocal cord. Obviously, her health, peace and welfare are far more important.....but singing is one of her greatest loves in life. I hope it's not selfish for me to pray that God protects her vocal chords, so that she can continue to sing. God forgive me if I am being selfish.

I am praying for your daughter and for you. Be strong.
But remember, you can live a long and full life without a thyroid.
My mother had hers removed when she was 23 years of age.
She is now 73 years of age with 3 children, 4 grandchildren by blood (Many many more by marriage to my stepfather), and 2 great grandchildren by blood.
She has to take medication but other than that she's still going strong.

Oh dear. My son went through a serious bout with cancer after his return from Iraq- I know what an unsettled and frightening time you’re going through.

My doc says not to worry about it and that we will just check it every 9 months or so. I have already decided I want him to take it out. My understanding was that it was pretty low risk. But after reading your post, I am wondering if I have something more serious than the doc has relayed.
Either way, I empathize with your daughter and wish her the best.
