CHESAPEAKE - A 21-year-old Mormon missionary died Monday night after he and his partner were shot while going door-to-door in the Deep Creek area.
The other missionary, age 19, was in serious condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Monday night, Chesapeake police said.
Police did not release the victims identities.
According to police the two missionaries were walking in the 2600 block of Elkhart Street off George Washington Highway about 6 p.m. when they were approached by another man. The man shot them both and fled on foot.
One of the victims ran to The Charity House, a nearby nursing home, to seek help.
Police described the suspect as a black male, about 510 wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans. He was last seen heading toward Janice Lynn Court, which backs up to Elkhart.
The two missionaries had bicycles, but were not riding them at the time.
A group from the Mormon church, known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, waited in the consultation room at the Norfolk General emergency room Monday night. They declined to comment.
According to the churchs official web site there are more than 60,000 Mormon missionaries, mostly young men and women who volunteer to spread the churchs message for one and a half to two years all over the world, at their own expense.
There are apartment buildings at the end of Elkhart Street, and some residents could not leave or return to their homes for a time Monday night.
Police, working in a moderate rain, had the street blocked off a short way off George Washington Highway.
This is close to home, said resident Bobby Gatling. He has lived on the block for two years. Nothing like this has ever happened here before.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

I join in prayer for the surviving missionary and both families and loved ones!
He's a typical thug, coward that needs to be hunted down and ........ punished. I'm sure he'll have a novel defense strategy.
Welcome.
Sorry to read this and will join others in prayer.
The way I see it is that mankind will discuss religion until their last days on earth. Healthy debate is interesting as long as everyone keeps it on an intellectual level and refrains from calling names. Heck, that's what FR is for.
I leave Jesus Christ, the Son of God to judge us all when that day comes.
And I'm really glad that your grandmother had someone help her when she needed help. That's what we're all here for.
THE END ;-)
"Please don't start that here."
I don't know what was wrong with saying welcome. You should maybe deal with your stress in another way.
Can't you call someone and find out if you knew the victim? I know that being on FR would be one of the last places I would be if I thought someone I knew was killed or injured.
But perhaps I need to forgive all the Mormons I have known for their passionate ignorance and desire to deceive as they tried to proselytize me.
It was a deep wound that helped me in the long run to be scrupulous where Christian doctrine is concerned.
wow, that pride thing is a toughie, ain't it?... and Charity to a young man that died doing what??? Just trying to find his way towards the Lord.
But of course since you're the final word on who the "false teachers" are then by all means pass judgment on these evil false teachers. By all means let us not forget that you suffered a "deep wound" that now allows you to scrupulously defend the Christian doctrine by putting down others. That's what Jesus did... and Paul.... and I guess Peter.
From what I can tell, most of us are just trying to muddle through the best we can in hope that the Lord will somehow through his grace let our pathetic lives reflect well on his sacrifice for us.
I think anytime you think you're a "better Christian" than somebody else....... you need to take a hard look in the mirror brother.
Pride.... it's a mother..... I know, I've got it in spades.
I hope they find the creep and extract his lungs and brains, if any, through his nose.
Gee I don't have a problem. Just stating a fact. Is that wrong?
C.S. Lewis wrote a chapter in Mere Christianity on pride. It's book three chapter 8, called The Great Sin. It's a great read.
No one knows yet a name because it hasn't been released yet. The family will be the first to find out.
I learned about this on FR. I got a call about midnight.
Primary indications are that the people I personally know were serving in other areas but we can't be 100% sure until later.
Now if I want to be online until 5am so be it.
This is such a trajedy. My little sister is serving in this mission and actually just left this area before Christmas. She always would talk about how dangerous it is there. I just cant imagine if this would have happened to my sister. And to all of you who are using this as a cheap excuse to bash guys who are giving two years to something they believe in, I hope you get a life. I doubt any of you are devoted enough to your own religion to go out and do this for two years. I bet you wouldnt last more than a month.
I doubt that your post will last a minute!
...and you think that this type of post under an article descirbing the murder of a mormon will draw people to Christianity how?
You my friend, seem awfully confused. I don't remember Christ showing the insensitivity that you are showing.
