DAYTON, Ohio -- A Dayton, Ohio-built Wright Flyer could take off for the first time in a century Thursday on the North Carolina coast. A replica of the airplane in which Orville and Wilbur Wright made their historic flight has completed a tour and is ready for testing at an airfield north of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers Aeroplane Company built the double-decker plane in Dayton. The group led by Nick Engler plans to re-enact the first flight today and tomorrow. They'll launch the craft from a wooden rail.

I watched the Glen Ellen Flyer at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on the 100th anniversary. Unfortunately the wind speed didn't cooperate for an actual flight.

They had a show on the History channel that pissed me off, I stayed up untill about 2:00 am thinking they were actually going to fly the thing after the whole show about building it, then they showed the thing on the grass runway and rolled the credits............damnit! I stayed up for nothing.

Maybe they will show the footage of this flight if it is successful. Do you know if it's the same group as the one that you saw building a plane of the History Channel?
The Smithsonian has a new Wright Brothers exhibit.

From the Smithsonian website
"The original first airplane, 1903 Wright Flyer, has always been displayed hanging. When the exhibition opens in October, 2003, it will mark the first time that the Flyer is presented on the ground, providing visitors a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to view its many interesting details close up."

Exact replica of the Wright brothers plane that flew at Kitty Hawk. Now that I think of it, it was probably called the Spirit of Glen Ellen.
