Xinhua says a "fairly strong earthquake" jolted Hokkaido at 4:50 AM local time Friday. No casualty or damage report yet.

OK, but report seems to indicate that the quake was out to sea, and there may or may not be a tsunami.

It might be noted that now is the new moon. Maximum tidal stress. Right now.

On the J map (just given) go to the northern island of Hokkaido. see the orange line (highway) running through the second "K" in Hokkaido. Trace that down to the end of the peninsula due south. Then, go offshore a couple of 50 to 100 miles. That is the epicenter.

Well, the USAF station on Shemya will be the first hit. It's way the heck and gone out in the Aleutians, and has _excellent_ communications.

If there's no tsunami there, there's not going to be one. If there is, we'll know about it in plenty of time to deal with evacuations in AK, if necessary.

"Tsunami warnings for AK. Rut Rho, I'm going for a hike!"

Got room for one more in your all terrain jeep there, Alaska?

Now is when we need that rock song from a few years back "Take Me To Higher Ground". :-)

Nothing on USGS yet. However, their posting time for the last earthquake they list was over an hour after the event occurred.
