Tom who? Er, that would be Senator Tom McClintock, who the news media is declaring the winner of tonight's debate. Read it and weep!
To: Kevin Curry
I do not believe McClintock will shift or bend to the demands of the mob. For his courage and coolness despite the vicious and unjust attacks on his character, there are few men living I have come to respect as much as I have McClintock. *********************
You're a good man, Kevin Curry.

he didn't attack Arnold as I fretted he would. C Wellll, maybe just a little bit but Arianna inserted herself into it and it got defused. The part about Arnold's advisor Pete Wilson raising taxes, Arnold shot back "Come Oct.8th it won't be Gov. Wilson or Gov. So and So it will be Gov. Arnold." Just then, not wanting Tom and Arnold to have all the fun, Arianna jumped in with some blather and the original exchange was forgotten. But they both made their point with very little bleeding.

It was very nice of you to post that. Thank you.
Of the two Republicans:
One is a businessman who created wealth for himself and his chosen state, presented himself well. His only speaking skills were gained from employment in the private sector.
The other Republican uses the taxes of the businessman to pay himself and his staff well while preaching about fiscal responsibility. His debate skills were gained over 20 years at the taxpayers expense.
I wonder how the founding fathers of America would choose as a leader...

"I did NOT, repeat did NOT mean YOU guys, the "Admin Moderators of FR"!!!" I'll say it: "D'OH!"

At least Jay Leno will have some material for a while...
Arianna gave him plenty of jokes to last at least for a month.

Here's my summary: The Moderator said "Governor Schwarzennegger". He also said he needed to reduce his meds after he said that...

I didn't learn anything about Tom tonight that I didn't know a month or more ago. If Tom's numbers were high enough I'd support him, but he and Scharzenegger aren't going to appeal to the same sectors of the electorate. I think Schwarzenegger is the guy this time. I must say that I resent Tom being in at this point due to the threat that he may cost both himself and Schwarzenegger the election at this point.
To: ntnychik
I'm glad you enjoyed them, and I appoligize if I made it though for you.
To: ladyinred
I think that will pass.
I respect those that support Tom because he is the most qualified candidate and the only conservative.
I also respect those that will vote for Ah-nold because they believe he is the only electable option to Davis or Bustamonte.
These are both perfectly reasonable opinions for loyal Republicans. The personal attacks and bitterness of those who can't see this is sad to see, but I truly believe that Ah-nald will win, that Tom will support him and get loads of support later for other races, and the Republican Party in California will be far better off than it is now.
We should be happy that we have two viable candidates. Davis and Cruz are both dead-ends, and I think a clear majority of Californians realize this. Tom, IMHO, can't win right now, but I do think he will win in the future if he comes across a little more human. I beleive he is a good man, but style is so very important in politics and he needs to work on that.
Also, politics holds surprises. It is possible that Tom will gain a LOT in the next week. Maybe he really IS electable -- it depends on how independent and liberal Californians, who think differently than us, react to his impressive performance. We'll see.

"I don't find it scary at all."
When they don't know or care about the issues? I seem to recall Clinton talking about his underwear on MTV. That was the newsclip which aired over and over on MTV.
What good did those charmed voters bring?

I loved the line about Arianna waiting an hour and a half for a photo shoot with Arnold.
To: Dan from Michigan
In Arnold's defense(and I'm a McClintock backer), sometimes a little fire is needed. Well, so am I, and I wanted to pull her hair out. I think Arnold was restrained under the circumstances.
To: DoughtyOne
What a great thread folks. Thanks to the McClintock and Schwarzenegger supporters for your good comments and keeping the tone so positive. Great job. Come to think of it, you are right! Less vitriol is good. I'll try to remember that. :O)

This guy scared the bejeezis out of me. Last night a close friend of mine debated two greenies, one the executive director of Greenpeace and the other a flack from the World Wildlife Fund, over at one of the local universities. His role was to defend the administration's environmental policy.
The Greenpeace guy sounded just like the Green Party candidate tonight--lies, distortions, ad hominem attacks on the Bush administration, Republicans, and my friend.
But of course, my buddy won the debate going away by any imaginable scoring of it. He clearly showed the lies of the other side--how the air is getting cleaner and cleaner--has been for thirty years. He blew away their lying rhetoric at every point with the clear facts.
The sad part was that the hall was full of brain-washed college kids who ate up the Left's demagoguery like it was candy.
You're right, it's scary.
To: Mad_Tom_Rackham
LOL, I didn't notice but I like the description.
