Concerts and tours to raise awareness about 2004 election

Sonic Youth, the Donnas, the Liars, the Locust and Erase Errata are among the groups who have pledged their support for Bands Against Bush, a self-explanatory new artistic collective dedicated to lending its support to the "struggle against a world of perpetual fear and violence bolstered by the Bush administration." BAB has set up more than twenty regional chapters in the U.S. and abroad, with a directory of groups willing to participate in various events to raise voter awareness. Among the events planned is an October 11th international day of action, with concerts planned for New York City; Olympia, Washington; Seattle; Los Angeles; Boston; Washington, D.C.; Portland, Oregon; Paris, France; and Dublin, Ireland. The day of action will be preceded by a Rock Against Reagan Memorial show on October 9th.

On the recording front, Green Day, NOFX, Good Charlotte and others will contribute songs to Rock Against Bush, a compilation to raise political awareness prior to next year's presidential election. The set is due next year and will be augmented by a tour organized by NOFX frontman Fat Mike.

And Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello is planning to hit the road with fellow politically minded musicians Billy Bragg and Steve Earle on the Tell Us the Truth Tour this fall. The jaunt is being timed to coincide with campaigning for the 2004 election.

I saw Sonic Youth at Seattle's Bumbershoot festival a couple of years ago, and they stunk. Completely boring. Too much pot, not enough talent.

Not enough talent? You wouldn't know it if was blasting your ears out.

Sonic Youth were easily one of the top 5 most influential bands of the 80s. Their output in the 90s remained strong, while breaking underground bands into the mainstream. For example, they were instrumental in introducing Nirvana to the hordes of joyous frat boys who don't get exposed to music that isn't played on corporate radio.

PS, they now have a fulltime 5th member in Jim O'Rourke. He's a great musician and producer in his own right (produced Wilco's latest album). SY's 2003 release was a damn fine album. Get some education because your ignorance is on full display.

I saw Sonic Youth on PBS last week. They looked rather old...or maybe thats just the drugs n'stuff. LOL!

They're about 50 years old. They're pretty normal people actually, two of the members are married and have a little girl. They're active in the experimental scene but still enjoy rocking out.

I am a Rock'n Roller since I was born (late '50's), but this is the weirdest bunch I have had ever heard of.
Mind you, we had our crop of weird band names as well (Meat Loaf, Yardbirds, Blood, Sweat and Tears, etc..)

I went to see Sonic Youth with a friend who was a big fan, and he was disapppointed by the show, which consisted of a bunch of long, meandering semi-jazz tunes with no discernible structure. If they had talent, it wasn't on exhibit during that concert. And thanks for the correction on my musical tastes; I'll never again dare to disagree with your expert opinion.

No kidding! That guy was in a band called 'Lock Up' in Los Angeles before he slapped that band in the face and joing 'Rage'. Brian Grillo from 'Lock Up' essentially taught Tom Morello how to play the guitar...spent hours upon hours with him to get a style. (Morello sucked for the first year or so.) Morello has no loyalty and certainly no taste in politics. I saw him frequently enter this hole in the wall commie coffee shop up on Sunset Boulevard and spend hours there with his posse. (I freelanced out of an office right near there so I could see everything that went on...:)

Suddenly, I feel a whole lot better.
