FReeper Storm Check-in (vanity)
9-19-03 | me

Posted on 09/19/2003 5:33:24 AM PDT by netmilsmom

Through the week, many of us heard of FReepers who were in the path of Isabel. I personally know Gabz, Corin Stormhands and Consitution Day were in the area. I thought it would be a good idea if we had a thread to ask if someone is ok and let them check in. Prayers to our FRiends in harms way. Thanks!

Advil is NOT good Howlin.

I ended up taking mass quantities in my younger days for severe female "pain" issues. I ended up with (not diagnosed at the time) peptic ulcers and left with chronic gastritis.

Because of this I've ended up not being able to ever take anything stronger than Tylenol for pain for the rest of my life. Oh and I'm on GI medication on and off forever because of it too.

That stuff will rip your gut up BIG TIME!!!

Well, after perusing the thread, I'm glad to see most of the names that were on yesterday when the storm hit.

Me, too.

Maybe next time we should add "calling tree" to our list so we can take roll!

Herndon to Ashburn is pretty, or at least used to be back then, which is about the time I used to bike it.

It's almost time for me to go back and look for wild persimmons. I know a few places around there that have wild persimmon trees that I like to visit after first frost.

Chantilly/Centreville are fine, they probably just don't have power. There are a few places which are close to little creeks but I haven't heard anything about flooding there, period.

The maps showed Raleigh somewhat out of the immediately affected areas.

Thanks. They have a large area behind the house that they call a drain field or something of the sort ..... not for sewerage but to prevent flooding .... it's grassed and rimmed with trees and looks like it would hold an awful lot of water. I think it would float that tanker I referenced earlier (*grins*) so I'm not too concerned about flooding with the amount of rain I've heard about up that way.

Kent Island is overlooked from local coverage, as is most of the Eastern Shore. We had a tough day digging out but I've gotten to know most of my neighbors quite well in the last 24 hours.

The power company did a great job and the people here are rock solid. As they were sweeping out most of the water from the Angler's Inn, people were asking when dinner was going to be served. Gotta' love it.

I honestly almost called The Weather Channel twice this week; one of their anchorettes CANNOT pronouce the word "Chincoteague."

I couldn't begin to even tell you how she TRIED to pronouce it, more than once even! It's darned insulting to the public when they don't do their homework and have the skills and information necessary to inform the other people in the country, much less the the locals, of what is going on.

The second time she said it, all I could think was "Didn't she read the BOOK?" I mean, I didn't know there was a young girl alive who didn't read Misty of Chincoteague!!!

That's only one of many "mistakes" they made that really irritated me. I felt like I was getting the USA TODAY version for the "unwashed masses."

I noticed it as well. TWC has the same stuffed shirts as most of the networks, so go figure. Here's an interesting tidbit: the local AM conservative talk-radio station affiliated with the local TV network decided to combine the TV coverage with the radio format. So they showed the overnight host combined with the standard vapid blonde TV meatbag; the result: rave reviews.

It was a rare event where the talkshow gained massive support for no other reason than disseminating information and not fearing "political" or otherwise "offensive" calls. The overnight radio host handled it with aplomb while the TV gal was flustered.

Needless to say, the public called in the next day praising the combination and the radio guys while omitting the talking heads from the solution.

It's truly remarkable how the media elite, no matter where they live, have no clue how simple it is to make a difference. Just stick by your principles, answer questions, give out information, and the very least, give people a voice.

Meanwhile, over on National Public Radio, what were they talking about: the quagmire in Iraq. Naturally.

I learned long ago that TWC is great for getting general info and for data .... and their maps are helpful. But when it comes to specific information about a locale they don't do their homework.

They've covered enough hurricanes from the Wilmington area ...... and been set up in places with which I am extremely familiar ..... that I realize just how wrong they are. E.g., they still don't know the difference between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach after all these years of live shots from the bridge leading to the beach.

When a hurricane is days out to sea, I watch TWC .... or if there is severe weather in another part of the country. But once the threat gets close to home, I find local coverage .... or shout at the tv a lot.

I'm sure they do the same sort of thing when covering a tornado outbreak in OK or a snowstorm in CO. The general info is good enough for me in those cases but probably frustrates the residents of those states.

And TWC isn't the only guilty party ..... the other networks do the same sort of thing.

the quagmire in Iraq

I think we may be behind on that word; today I'm positive I heard a new "buzzword" that the liberals are using to describe the word........and for the life of me, I can't remember what it was.....I heard it in three different reports and it was all about the Kennedy remarks.

It may have been "a brewing disaster" or something close to that, but it struck me right off that this is their new "talking point" and I made a mental note to see how many times I heard it on the weekend shows just to confirm to myself that they have moved on to the next number on their "We Want the Power Back and We'll say whatever it takes to get it back" agenda.

Oh, that reminds me: I spent a lot of time yelling at that guy down at Atlantic Beach......LOL.

First of all, the "causeway" is the approach TO the bridge, not the bridge.

And, secondly, the "inlet" the bridge goes over is the INTERCOASTAL WATERWAY, dimbulb.

Just that kind of stuff really gets on my nerves!

And Morehead City and Atlantic Beach are as distinct as Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach ...... and the list goes on and on. But at least they show pictures so we can see what's happening. I know where they are even if they don't ..... LOL!

The words would be: "Miserable failure". The sad thing is that the media elite actually think that they speak for us, the unwashed, by making a position for us. Namely, anti-American, anti-war, and counter-productive efforts, the likes of which I've seen in the last few days surrounding this hurricane.

Everytime we Americans come together they are apoplectic. It happened post- 9-11, it happened post-Afghanistan, it happened post-Iraq, and it's happening post-hurricane.

If you look at it from the perspective of anti-Americanism it all makes sense. From Horowitz to the Daily Standard; if they don't come together, they're pulling us apart. Despite our natural impulses to take care of each other.

Americans aren't defined by soundbites or voting trends; we're defined by our actions. And in the course of disasters we're quite clear: we don't need the hot air, we just need solutions. And if you don't offer solutions, we'll just do it ourselves. But don't expect votes for hollow words after the heavy lifting has been done.

You take care .

We are lucky that we only lost power for a few hours.

You got that right, as I was about to reply to this last night - my power went out again!!! I just gave up and went to bed.
