The aluminum stakes don't sound very secure for a violent storm.

I think you're right, but I'll wait until the last minute to make up my mind. My husband is a Yankee, he's never been through a real hurricane. He and the kids think I am over-reacting as usual, which I've been doing ever since 9/11.

My new motto is "panic early and panic often." -g-

BTW, Virginia Beach is "encouraging" evacuation as of 11 a.m. this morning.

I'm in VA Beach, at work so I'm getting limited new info. Last night the local guys seemed pretty calm and the city said they foresaw no need to evacuate, this morning everything seems more intense and the city's starting to suggest some evacuations and mandate others. I've checked the forecast maps and they still show the same paths I saw last night...

Are you aware of any changes that haven't yet been updated on the maps?

Just make sure you have cash, water, and food. You'll be suprised at how many people never have enough fresh water and don't understand that is the number one priority after a storm.

LOL! I think that's the new motto for the entire DC area!

We (Pentagon) are now canceling some Friday meetings. Client is on the phone now to other bases out west to say, STAY HOME!

Well, now, I'm not sure; perhaps somebody will come along and tell us how far she is from the "other" side of the Gulf Stream!

I know the Gulf Stream is about 50 miles wide!

And on the rare occasions they do mention it - most have no clue what or where it is.

For the most part, I think people on the shore don't want alot of people to know about it. It is a treasure.

>> He and the kids think I am over-reacting as usual <<

I know what you mean. I have a liberal roommate who thinks I'm over-reacting. We were talking last night and she didn't even know a hurricane was on the way. She also didn't know where the gas shut-off was, which I located for her. For a college educated (indoctrinated) person, she's not too bright.

The latest forecast for my area is 50-70mph winds w/ 2-5 inches of rain. I was thinking about getting out of the area, but have decided to stay and ride it out. I don't think the flooding will be as bad as I originally thought. If we get more than 5 inches of rain I may be sorry I stayed. This storm is so big that I'd have to drive 300 miles to get to some place only moderately affected.

I'm in VA Beach

If it comes ashore in NC, you will have a lot of wind and rain. If it doesn't, you are in trouble.

She's attending the Washington Architectural Arts Center in Alexandria. We visited the campus there last summer. It's real and it's there.

Looks like a radar map. There is no radar coverage more than about 200 miles off the coast.

THE DYNAMICAL MODELS ARE VERY TIGHTLY CLUSTERED AROUND A LANDFALL IN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA

Well, I wouldn't trust a model which predicted a landfall in Western North Carolina or Eastern Kansas.

I'm on the Peninsula! They just made an announcement that if the wind speed picks up to 59mph or more that they will shutdown all the bridges. So?? Keep it on WNIS 790AM or whatever radio channel you can get there.

Of course, VA Dominion Power stated that if power is lost, it could be a lengthy time. So?? Pray the power doesn't go out.

I'm in Alexandria and I've been really surprised at how blasé people have been. 3” of snow (that melts 12 hours later) will bring this city to a halt. Yet many people here seem to think it’s just going to be a thunderstorm. Went to the hardware store last night for some plywood (we have a big tree in the back yard that is too close for comfort!) and there was no one there. Old Town Alexandria tends to flood easily. Extensive flooding will bring metro rail (subway) to a halt in some areas near the Potomac. Suggest she get some water and snacks and a radio and hunker down. This is a densely populated area with a lot of trees. There’s going to be a mess.

My apologies. I am familiar with Alexandria and I had no idea it's there. I hope your daughter will be safe. I know they are preparing sandbags for Old Town.
