Hurricane Isabel is falling apart and fast. Re-Con planes have been flying in the storm since midnight and the entire west quad of the storm has disappeared. The eastern portion of the storm has a wind around 110KTS. There is discussion that re-strengthening will occour within 24 hours though so this still remains a threat.
Pressure has dramatically risen as well. Discussion currently is Isabel making landfall in either Northern South Carolina or Southern North Carolina and a due north move after landfall. Thinking is a landfalling Category 2 minimal 3 storm.

"It was a dark and stormy night..."
Well, Edwards has some modicum of charisma, which I am glad to see off the TV for whatever pre-empts it. I wonder if his beach house is in the path of Isabel?

the best news report I heard was an interview on NYC local news with a woman in Seagate Brooklyn, right along the water. Her quote:
"its not the water that concerns me, but I think the 160MPH winds are going to be a problem"

My wife still has trouble with the signs there... :-)

A quote from Edwards during his speech .....
.....I learned that credibility is the currency of good people.
As many lies as the 'rats tell every day, just what does that say about them!

Right on a point at the junction of the Atlantic Ocean, the ICWW, and the Figure Eight Island sound!

How long has he been "making up his mind" now?
If you want my opinion, he's the most dangerous man in the race; not because he can win, but because he's a damn liar.

It's definitely in the Hurricane Watch area ..... north of Wilmington, south of Morehead City. On a very exclusive island that the 'regular' people are not allowed to visit.
My niece's in-laws used to live there. During Fran, they evacuated to Raleigh ..... and their car got completely covered up by flood waters in the hotel parking deck.
One of their neighbors on the island lost their million dollar home ...... and re-building wasn't an option because their whole lot washed out to sea .. simply wasn't there any more!

Even if it does hit the coast (and I still have my doubts), Isabel will be closer to a nuisance than it will be to a cataclysm. Uh, Floyd was a Cat 2 when it hit NC. Part of the problem is that, as Isabel's winds slow, it is getting wider - which means there will be a longer period of rain for the affected areas, and possibly more flooding. In addition, as it gets larger, the fetch, or length of ocean that the winds blow over, increases, which could well increase wave heights.
Don't downplay this system just yet. The region that Isabel is headed for is already saturated by rain. Freshwater flooding will probably be the greatest threat here. And, if the storm takes a slight turn to the north, it could move the storm along the length of the coast from Hatteras to Montauk, which would cause damage to shore properties for a long, long distance - the lack of intensity being replaced by the size of the affected area.
Hopefully this bitch will speed up, go through central NC and up into western PA as a tropical storm and not linger long enough to cause catastrophic flooding. That's the best case scenario here.

Nice beachfront digs for the champion of the Regular People.

One of my closest friends has a house right around the cove from him; he has to walk by her house to get to the beach; one morning she was going to her mailbox and he came jogging by and he said, "I love your yard; do you do your own yardwork?"
She's like, DUH.......I mean, a two million dollar house and she does the landscaping? I think not!
I'll tell you this: there is not ONE person on Figure Eight Island who wants him to win; the board told the people who rented to Al Gore that they did NOT want him back because of all the Secret Service; the people on that island have REAL money, not political money.......LOL.

Miss Marple:"I wonder if his [John Edwards'] beach house is in the path of Isabel?"Carolinamom:"It's right on the beach, according to the picture Howlin posted. Has lots of glass too."
Great pic Howlin posted a while back of the million-dollar (tax value; market value surely more) oceanfront vacation home our populist, for the workin' man Senator has on Figure Eight Island, which is private and not accessible by the little people. It is near Wilmington, and unlikely to be in harm's way, nor would I wish that on him or his neighbors. Anyway, with the greatly decreased strength if Isabel, even a direct hit wouldn't do much harm to sturdily built structures.

Nice beachfront digs for the champion of the Regular People. The 'regular people,' being us, bought that thing for him. He bought it right after one of his big cases.
